So he’s gonna to go back in time, he’s gonna fall in love with Alisha, then she dies, and they’re gonna be stuck doing it over and over and over again for all eternity?

I absolutely agree with the entire review! It was breathtakingly amazing and the seamless transition between past and present makes it a very easy watch. The most interesting part of the show is that the actual transmissions don’t take vry long - the two of them effectively communicate for maybe 1-3 min at max every time? But each time they communicate, they tilt one another’s perspectives and go about solving things in their own capacities. It really puts the butterfly effect to the test, because a simple comment from one is enough to alter reality in completely unexpected ways.
Coming to the time travel analyses, I had basically the exact same thoughts as well? Beyond the individual resolutions to the cases themselves, the main thing was what happens to the radio? At the very end, Hae Young hypothesises that maybe someone else got hold of the radio and Jae Han continued his transmissions with someone else..which would mean Jae Han lost his radio again. But if Jae Han never connected with Hae Young, he would not have gotten involved in Sun Woo’s case either...so how would Hae Young’s family get back together? Also if Bum Joo dies, then does Sun Woo live?
I think for me though, the biggest question is how do the character’s memories alter? If we take Back To The Future as a reference point, the characters physically travel through time hence anyone in the DeLorean is not affected...but Marty also is not familiar with the new altered timeline. In Signal, Hae Young clearly remembers the original timeline and the new one. When Soo Hyun gets involved, she recalls that her original memory has also altered (when she sees Jae Han before he goes to the Mental Hospital). At the very end, both of them clearly remember their old lives while it seems that Hae Young is not familiar with his new life (he doesn’t realise that he has a new position etc). So the characters don’t gain knowledge of the altered timelines?
Quite a bit of technical loopholes that don’t really make sense if you think about hard enough, but otherwise the show worked really well considering the case-solving aspects.
Drama Review: Signal
Genius. This drama was genius. Pardon me while my inner whovian comes out.
Rating: 5/5
OST: 9/10 All the songs have a similar sound, and it’s like a movie soundtrack.
Genre: Crime, Supernatural, Thriller
Synopsis: If you get a chance to connect with the past will you be able to change the future?! After finding an old walkie-talkie, Detective Park Hae Yeong manages to connect with detective Lee Jae Han in the past. Together with the help of team leader Cha So Hyun they manage to solve South Korea most famous cold cases and reveal Police corruption. (source: mydramalist)
Trigger Warning: Rape. There’s a case involving a gang rape and they do go into the story. Also there are other cases like suicide, murder, kidnapping, assault, etc.
*also there is a scene in episode 1 with a lot of camera flashes at night, and I know flashing lights can trigger epilepsy so be careful*
Do I Recommend?: This is a must-watch.
Thoughts/Review:
To be honest, I had no intention of watching this drama. I just had no interest in it when it first started. I started it because of the amazing reaction it got after the premiere.
And it was one of the best decisions I’ve made.
It starts tugging at your heart within the first five minutes of episode one. I was hooked. It had a really nice, strong start, and it just kept getting stronger.
The whole drama was like a movie.
The feelings it gave. I was on the edge of my seat in literally every episode, and every episode messes with your emotions. Seriously, this drama likes to give you pain.
It’s kind of episodic. Police dramas usually are because of all the different cases being investigated. I don’t have a problem with it because I find cases interesting, but I know some people have a problem when dramas are episodic. Please don’t let it turn you off, it’s necessary to the story. The different cases are all so important to building the main plot.
Honestly, the whole drama is just genius. The story itself, how everything connected, and how well plotted the cases were (really the entire drama was well plotted out) just blew me away. Oh my God there was so much attention to detail. And the characters were all so smart, it was a relief to not be screaming at the characters for missing the blatantly obvious. The writing was fantastic There were times I actually got chills. For those who know what I’m talking about: the ending of episode 9. Chills.
What made it even better was that it wasn’t all serious and shocking and heartbreaking, but there was a lot of comedy too.
The acting was amazing. I know some people had a problem with Lee Je Hoon, but I thought he was fine. The cast portrayed their expressions and emotions really well. I was really impressed with Kim Hye Soo for being able to switch from the timid Cha Soo Hyun in the past to the strong Cha Soo Hyun in the present.
I also need to take a moment to applaud the stylists for doing a good job of making Lee Je Hoon look like a high schooler.
Overall, I am just so impressed with the drama. The cinematography, the writing, the acting, everything was just incredible. I was really attached to the characters and the story. The feeling I got when the story started to come full circle, I can’t even describe it. I am in awe.
And God I hate open endings but this one was just so well put-together and beautiful, I can’t dislike it.
They’re totally leading up to a season two. There has to be a season two.
Now excuse me while I try to analyze the transmissions. *SPOILERS INCLUDED*
