Everything Louder Than Everything Else (Meatloaf)
And I ain't in it for the power/And I ain't in it for my health I ain't in it for the glory of anything at all/And I sure ain't in it for the wealth/But I'm in it 'til it's over and I just can't stop/If you want to get it done/You got to fight for yourself/And I like my music like I like my life
"In a world where everything feels like it's on fire, we gotta take care of ourselves and fight for what we believe in! Make all of them think you're just another wasted youth!"
Seven (Taylor Swift)
And i've been meaning to tell you/I think your house is haunted/Your dad is always mad and that must be why/And i think you should come live with me/And we can be pirates/Then you won't have to cry/Or hide in the closet
"oh god where do i start. The YEARNING for a childhood friend who's face you don't even remember now. The desire to run aways sith your friend who's family is extremely shitty but all of this filtered throught the eyes of a child. The more i think about this song the more insane i get."

A Little Bit of Everything (Dawes)
I think that love is so much easier than we realise/If you can give yourself to someone, then you should/Cause it’s a little bit of everything/The way you joke, the way you ache/It is getting up way before you so I can just watch you as you wake/So on that day in late September, it’s not some stupid little ring/I’m getting a little bit of everything
"i used to listen to this song all the time as a kid. the original version, not this specific live version, but in my opinion the extra age that comes with this version makes it hit so much harder. and i *completely* forgot about it, for years and years, only to rediscover it at the end of 2024, and… well, that’s it to me. that feeling of rediscovery and nostalgia. it’s such a beautiful song about the entire human experience and how every single thing in your life contributes to your experience *of* that life and how love is really very easy, when it comes down to it, and about how empathy and understanding other people’s possible lives is so important. and it’s a song that i try to live my life by on the bad days. it’s a song that reminds me there is good, there has been good, there will be good, because i am here. and I love it very much indeed. the guitar solo feels like ripping your heart out of your chest"
Orange Juice (Noah Kahan)
That my life has changed, that this town has changed/And you have not/That the world had changed, don’t you find it strange/That you just went ahead and carried on?/And you know I’d say the last time I drank/I was faced down passed out on your lawn
"God the tragedy of it all— loving someone who has fundamentally changed since you last saw them"

Ragnarok V: End of the Line (The Mechanisms)
Goodbye my love, yet shed no tears/The lives we've shared have brought us here/I will stay by your side I’ll hold on through/This time, this time
"Even though Sigyn says "shed no tears", I can't listen to this song without crying. They're dying together, and even then it will buy less than a century to delay the apocalypse."
David (Sammy Rae and the Friends)
David/Armed only with your sticks and stones/You can break more than just a person's bones/When you're taking that long walk alone David,/Goliath never fought this hard/I've never seen a giant half as scarred/I've never seen one half as tall as you are
"It’s about the standards of masculinity and how we don’t let boys be fragile. I saw it performed live and it was heart wrenching"

A Trophy Father's Trophy Son (Sleeping With Sirens)
Why are you walking away? Was it something I did?/Did I make a mistake?/'Cause I'm trying to deal with the pain/I don't understand this, is this how it ends?/Why are you running away?/I don't understand this, is this how it ends?/Why are you running away?/Tell me please, tell me please, I need to know
"It's a song about a dad who doesn't love you and doesn't care and walks away and doesn't ever tell you why and so you spend your entire childhood trying to figure out what you did wrong and why you were wrong and what is it about you that makes you so unlovable and idk it really gets to me"
The Breaking of the Fellowship (Lord of the Rings)
But in dreams/I can hear your name/And in dreams/We will meet again
"This track makes me tear up just 20 seconds in. There are too many themes in it for me to list but during this point in the film, the fellowship of the ring finds itself at a crossroads. After losing two members, they must disband, each group moving in different directions with different aims. Frodo and Sam are left on their own to carry the ring to Mordor. It is a deeply upsetting moment. Boromir just died, they are being hunted left and right, the odds are against them, their road ahead is hard, their goal appears near impossible. Frodo realizes that he must go on alone, the path of a ringbearer being a lonely one. Determination sets in among the hopelessness. The shire flute appearing about 2 minutes in and the following "In Dreams" theme is just sooo soo beautiful and hauntingly sad."

Your Deep Rest (The Hotelier)
You said you're trapped in your body, getting deeper every day/They diagnosed you born that way, they say it runs in your family/A conscious erasure of a working-class background, where despair trickles down/Imbalanced chemical crutch, open up, swallow down/You said 'remember me for me, I need to set my spirit free' I should have never gave my word to you, not a cry not a sound/Might have learned how to swim, never taught how to drown
"A song that is both a personal story about a friend's suicide AND a conversation on the issues with our country's culture surrounding mental health and medical system? This song gets me alllll the fucking time. I wish I could add more lyrics because every. Damn. Part. Of this song is PERFECTION, totally raw and emotional, but still poetic. The chorus lyric of "I called in sick from your funeral" feels both so perfectly mundane, because this is a thing that can happen to anyone, but so gloriously heart-wrenching as well. You CALLED IN SICK??? From a FUNERAL??? You can DO THAT??? Obviously you can but like. Imagine. Being so torn up over a friend's death and what you could or couldn't have done to help that you CALL IN SICK FROM THEIR FUNERAL because you can't even stomach it. The song paints such a vivid picture of the feelings going through the singers head."
More Than This (Wilt)
I think I liked it better before we got together/I think I liked it better before we kissed/And even though I want you now more than ever/I thought I would feel something more than this
"me when the "you got the thing you wanted and it still didn't make you happy""

Mr Blue Sky (Electric Light Orchestra)
Mr. Blue, you did it right but soon comes/Mr. Night creeping over, now his hand is on your shoulder nevermind/I'll remember you this/I'll remember you this way
"Its Mr Blue Sky!!! Literally, it's about the sun finally coming out after a long period of dreary stormy weather. But it's more than that!!! It's about finding joy in life after a long time of hardship!! To paint something as simple as a sunny blue sky as the most wonderful being in the world. Someone that brings joy to everyone just when everyone has nearly forgotten what happiness is. And yet at the end soon comes the night. Because joy is never forever. The end instrumentals always came off to me as the grand "death" of Mr. Blue Sky at the hands of Mr. Night. A joyous sendoff, followed by grief creeping in. Only to look up and see the bright moon and stars. Remembering that Mr. Blue Sky never truly dies."
Time in a Bottle (Jim Croce)
If I could save time in a bottle/The first thing that I'd like to do/Is to save every day til' eternity passes away/Just to spend them with you
"This guy set the standards of romance in the fucking sky. The most beautiful love song like, ever, imo. I love you so much I want to spend eternity with you. Everything I wished for came true with you. I will never have enough time with you. The fingerpicking guitar is also fucking *impeccable*"

Homesick (Radical Face)
Well, I left my home on hollow bones/While you were curled and sleeping/And I wandered far beneath a concrete star/And I slept along the highways/But even though I am lost all the time/I've got hooks in my sides that you left there/But you're not the same, you died along the way/And now, we're ghosts, and we're praying for winter
"Nostalgically longing for a home and/or past you can't return to, because people are always growing and changing. The people who forever changed you once are no longer who they once were. Neither are you. We are forever existing in a liminal state of being."
Respite on the Spitalfields (Ghost)
We will break away together/I’ll be the shadow, you be the light/Nothing ever lasts forever/We will go softly into the night
"This is the last song on Ghost’s IMPERA and while even on its own it hits hard I’m so glad I first listened to it as part of listening through the whole album because it hits so much harder. It’s a beautiful combination of melancholy and hope for a better future, and when the closing instrumental (which echoes the album’s first song Imperium) starts? Holy fuck I go to pieces every time."

Strangers Like Me (Tarzan)
I wanna know, can you show me?/I wanna know about the strangers like me/Tell me more, please show me/Something's familiar about these strangers like me
"The human condition. The need to learn more. The gratitude to share. The desire to connect to others! It's universal and the song is so uplifting. Collins make you lean in with Tarzan's curiosity in the best way. The song always leaves me with a renewed outlook. A positive disorientation, if you will."
Secrets for Nicotine (Sheryl Chan)
I traded a secret for nicotine/You kept the change in a torn pocket/Carried my through and stole my shoes/It's disgusting how you still can smile
"I have spent an unfortunate amount of time analyzing every single lyric in this Godforsaken song"

Computer Love (Balanescu Quartet)
"Just listen. It's so calm and gentle, but also so sad but also soothing. There's an aching sadness there that can only come from music without lyrics. And the repeat at the end! I don't know how they managed to put emotions of desperation and longing into the music itself, but they did it! Computer Love I think refers to loving something or someone that can't love you back, or loving someone who will never know you love them, or maybe the love we should all feel for each other as humans during this modern age. It's rare you find such good string music composed recently, and I really recommend these guys!
Poll Runner: Everyone go watch Carol and the End of the World right fucking now
Lips of an Angel (Hinder)
Well, my girl's in the next room/Sometimes I wish she was you I guess we never really moved on/It's really good to hear your voice saying my name/It sounds so sweet/Coming from the lips of an angel/Hearing those words, it makes me weak/And I never wanna say goodbye/But, girl, you make it hard to be faithful With the lips of an angel
"The angst! The longing! (Not for cheating, they should definitely leave their respective partners.)"

1-Up (Cricket!)
We pretend like it's so cool to be immobilized by pain/I'm so sorry that you like my songs because you can relate/I'm just singing cause I like to and it helps me to relax/But why the fuck would I want anybody to feel sad?/'Cause it's not about the pain it's about where the pain came from/And the fact that you're depressed means you know you were happy once/If you think that hope is hopeless I hope that I can lend a hand/The reason you're alive is so that you can love again
"The line "I'm so sorry that you like my songs because you can relate" automatically makes this one of my favorite and most fucky uppy songs ever."
Dziś Późno Pójdę Spać/I'll go sleep late tonight (Kwiat Jabłoni)
Open wide are my eyes/And my head is full and empty/And i don't know what I should think of/To dream about a world/In which I don't fear to sleep/In which I don't fear to sleep

Sous Ces Cils/Under Her Eyelashes (Kyo)
A perfect rain folds up to spare her/Among her overrated sisters/Me, I'm falling at her feet/Under her eyelashes, I bow down
"The Most Beautiful Love Song I've Ever Heard. The lyrics convey the love and infatuation in a way only poets can achieve. It makes me want to be loved the way he loves that girl, I want this played at my wedding. This is a ballad from a well-known French rock band, and any French Millenial is able to sing Dernière Dance like their life depends on it. Sous Ses Cils, if you don't speak French, is still a beautiful song to listen to. As someone with a literary background, this song is full of alliterations and assonances, which is very enjoyable to the ear even if you don't understand the language (which sadly doesn't translate well because I did a literal translation). It's important to note that poetry in French works under the alexandrine system, which is a 12-syllable basis as opposed to the English iambic pentameter. There are some alexandrines in the text, and the rest still follows a ambic structure (imo, I haven't done poetry analysis in a decade). Also apparently French is a romantic language so there you go, the Love Song to Rule Them All. Can we also talk about the simple and gentle guitar as the sole instrument? The softness of the voice? Do you feel the love seeping in to your bones? This is my own analysis but Sous Ses Cils is pronounced the same way as Sous Cécile ;which is a woman's name, I don't know much about the members' personal lives but maybe it's a reference to someone they know? Which emphasises the idea of belonging to her heart and soul. This is not Kyo's most popular song, and I wish I could fix that."
Fly With You (Tota Kasamura)
But instead, Pelipper seemed kind of sad/"It's fine for you to evolve/I'm sorry you did it because of me/Even if we won't be able to fly together anymore, the fact that we're friends won't change."/Hearing this, Mudkip smiled/"I didn't do it because of you/I chose to do it on my own/I want to stay as a Mudkip/Rather than evolve and get stronger, I want to keep flying with you forever/Because spending time with you in the sky is a precious treasure to me."
"This song is about one friend wanting to let another move on, while that friend just wants to stay with them. Also the combination of the sad vocals and the littleroot town theme are enough to make me cry."

The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! (Sufjan Stevens)
Oh, how I meant to tease him/Oh, how I meant to harm/Touching my back with my hand, I kiss him/I see the wasp on the length of my arm
"@CosChrono on YouTube: "I think it's even simpler than homophobia. The wasp is love. There's no sweeter way to deeply hurt someone than to love them, particularly when young and foolish. The sting is more painful and frightening with homophobia, but I think everyone is haunted by the loss of their first love, even into cold old age."
This Isn't The End (Owl City)
An eight-year-old girl had a panic attack/‘Cause the father she loved left and never looked back/No longer the hero she counted on/He told her he loved her, and then he was gone/She tried to look happy in front of her friends/But knew that she'd never feel normal again/She fought back the tears as they filled her eyes/And wanted him back just to tell him goodbye
"It’s about a man’s suicide from the perspective of the daughter he left behind and her trying to move on."

The Way Out Is Through (Nine Inch Nails)
All I’ve undergone/I will keep on
"the slow build this song has to its climax is absolutely unparalleled. and the repeated whispering of the refrain, “all I’ve undergone, I will keep on’? peak."
Moumai (Suni)
Ah, I noticed your secret/I wonder if I'll get erased like an anime character/I'll keep it a secret since I have no other option/I'll carry it to the grave/The sacrifice we bear is equal, so let's live happily, shall we? Squeeze the annoying, annoying flies tightly/Whoa, I need more of that accelerator/I notice your wavering gaze/You're so unfair, you keep lying / With shallow words / Meaninglessly adorned / Look, it's a huge, huge, huge failure
"the mv animation entrances me and the song turns my brain off or something. did not even know what the actual lyrics were til i had to look them up for the form it just does smth to me idk."

Esto Es Un Tesoro (Carmen Sanchez Viamonte)
When you told me "don't worry about it"/And then sealed with gold my broken vessels/I made this song before seeing you, now everything's clear/In spite of the chaos, my love, not death, I am safe/I want a lucky song to find eachother/I want a song from today to remind me who I am/This is a traseure
"The sheer emotion this song exudes is so overwhelming I can't listen to it without bursting into tears everytime. It's about the disbelief of being in a caring and uplifting relationship after having your trust broken many times before, wanting to accept the love but not quite believing it's real at first, then fiercely embracing it and being stronger for it. It really gives me the vibes of someone who has been through a lot but now is in a safe place and never wants to forget that it's possible to pull through and find people who truly care about you"
Bad Taste Blues, Part III (Ball Park Music)
And I don't regret one moment/In the back of my mind, I can hold it/It'll never go away/It's gotta be there/It's gotta be there/What if I can't find it in me anymore?
"It's so calm yet so profound... so cryptic yet so simple. Looking for something constant, some inspiration. and i love the melodies so much and the little bass flourishes. also australian indie music ftw"

Break of Dawn (Itoki Hana)
Surely, one day I can make it."/-without even being able to describe what "it" is/Why am I struggling?/With uncertain myself that can't believe in anything/"Maybe, you knew from the beginning, right?"/-That you are NOBODY, you can't be ANYTHING"/Look, the night is dawning in a color of lapis lazuli/How beautiful
"Just the melody of this song alone is enough to give me a tight feeling in my chest this song has such an atmosphere to it. Not knowing who you are, what you want, where you are headed, just stumbling through life. I think this is a feeling many people can relate to"
Shit Talk (Sufjan Stevens)
No more fighting/I've nothing left to give/I've nothing but atrophy/Did I cross you?/Did I fail to believe/In positive thoughts?/Our romantic second chance is dead/I buried it with the hatchet/Quit your antics/Put them at the foot of the bed/And set it on fire/I will always love you/But I cannot look at you
"oh goodness where do i even start with this song. firstly the GRIEF oh lord the grief is crushing me. this song was dedicated to Sufjan Stevens' partner who tragically passed away recently as well. but my goodness the grief is immeasurable. fucks me up forever"

Ohne Dich (Rammstein)
"This song feels like grief. The lyrics that evoke hopelessness, the droning instruments, it feels desolate. Also the video clip features a guy falling from a cliff and my 6 year old ass legit thought he straight up died."
That's My Home (May Erlewine)
If there's an answer/Then I have yet to see/What all of this will be/In the end I was a dancer/Now I'm struggling to move/But I will rise/I will break through/And move again
"To me, it's about how the world is ending and all we can do is the things we can, and just make the world a little bit better"

Neighborhood #2, Laika (Arcade Fire)
Our mother should have/Just named you Laika/It's for your own good/It's for the neighborhood
"This song paints a picture of an older sibling that is rebellious and hates their family. The singer claims that their older sibling should have been named Laika, something that both belonged to Laika, the spacefaring dog that never made it home alive, and also, a feminine name. This is in contrast to what they are being called, Alexander. This all comes together to make me feel like this is a song about a trans woman who runs away from home, and who really should have been named Laika."
Little Alter Boy (Smith & Thell)
And your future was chosen without nobody ever asking you/And all I know/You did anything for love, you did anything for love/All I know You did anything for love
"Ahhhhhhhhhh. The lyrics alone in this song fuck severely, never mind the vocals and music. I really like the way it plays with changes in sound dynamics. The lyric ‘your future was chosen without nobody ever asking you’ alone makes this song such a banger, but combined with everything else in the song fucks me up so bad. I really like the narration style for this song, it makes it even better. I think it’s a song that works really well being upbeat even though it could work as a slower song. Words just are not enough to describe how much I like this song."
