Fuck Yeah, Peninsula
22 posts
A fun and visual look at both the beauty and the political underbelly of the Peninsula. From Cupertino to Daly City, Montara to Belle Haven, food, buildings, the bayfront, the coastside, nature, traffic, politics, parks, schools, Caltrain, Facebook, open space, elections, 101, 280, 92, and El Camino Real. Fuck Yeah, PENINSULA!(All photos are property of this guy, except of course for stuff that's been reblogged.)

2 May 2013 - Late night at 415 Grand Ave. in South City. Occupy South San Francisco member Jackie Jo Lopez was unlawfully evicted from this space by South City PD last year. Ms. Lopez maintains that PD mistreated her because she is a transgender woman.
How much collusion took place between the powers that be in South City to make this eviction happen? 415 Grand is a huge space right across from South San Francisco City Hall that many developers and business interests likely had an eye on.
Jackie’s case file against the city can be viewed at sanmateocourt.org. Search for case number CIV519064.

2 May 2013 - South City Planning Commissioner Carlos Martin is surrounded by his religious conservative supporters as he tries to explain to a pro-choice woman why he voted against a use permit for Planned Parenthood. Martin stepped way outside the boundaries of the Planning Commission's purview by playing obstructionist games during the meeting, at one point even asking to see Planned Parenthood's financial audit. It had to be pointed out to Martin that planning staff didn't ask Planned Parenthood for the info because it was not necessary to approving a non-controversial use permit that conforms to the city's zoning. Pressured by the woman and the cameras in his face, Martin tried to backtrack and say his only objection was that the clinic should be somewhere other than Grand Avenue.

Shout out to the Raging Grannies, who help keep the Peninsula activist scene alive and well while also providing empowering visibility to kickass older women of all stripes. They're pictured here at an event in Palo Alto.

Transition Palo Alto sponsored Saru Jayaraman’s visit to the Peninsula where she galvanized an enthusiastic audience. Are we eating ethically if the workers who make our food, serve us, and clean the dishes and restaurant aren’t treated fairly? “Pay your workers well” sang the Raging Grannies to start off the evening. When the situation is necessary, ROC-United members have been on the streets in Los Angeles and New York in front of restaurants where appeals to restaurant employers to show respect for workers have failed. The Grannies, who were honoring long time restaurant worker and sister Granny Ann Bjorndahl who died recently, said “we’ll be there” when action is needed.

26 April 2013 - Looking out towards Redwood Shores, from the levee/Bay Trail next to Beach Park Blvd. in Foster City.
Unless millions are spent by Redwood City and Foster City to build and raise levees over the coming decades, Foster City and Redwood Shores will be the first to go as sea level rise approaches. Or, if a really strong earthquake hits, as Redwood Shores and Foster City are both built on filled wetlands.
