Lycoperdon pyriform 

Puffballs come in many sizes, some as small as a marble and some as large as a basketball. The name "puffball" is used here to refer to three genera of fungi, Calvatia, Calbovista, and Lycoperdon. Their surfaces may be smooth, covered with small or large warts, or ornamented with spikes.

This type of puffball fungi turns into a dark brown color when mature. It is edible when the flesh is still white and the gleba, fleshy spore-bearing inner mass, has not yet formed. When mature, the gleba will release spores through the dried aperture, the small opening on top, to any minor movement include a slight breeze. Commonly children will step on them and release a small cloud which has cited many myths including going blind, fungi growing inside of you, or even turn into a puffball fungi.
