Naxalism in India: A Movement Born from Neglect

Naxalism, also known as Left Wing Extremism, is one of India’s longest-running internal conflicts. It began in 1967 in Naxalbari, West Bengal, as a peasant uprising demanding land rights — but soon turned into a nationwide armed rebellion.

Across three distinct phases — 1967 to 1973, 1973 to 1990, and 2004 to the present — the movement evolved from ideological resistance to guerrilla warfare, forming groups like the People’s War Group (PWG) and CPI (Maoist). At its peak, Naxalism spread across the “Red Corridor,” covering parts of West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and even Karnataka.

But what made thousands of tribal people and landless poor join this violent path?

The answer lies in state neglect, land evictions, poverty, and police excesses. Naxal leaders promised justice, land, and dignity — things the state had failed to deliver for decades.

In recent years, however, India has taken a dual approach: combining strong police action with inclusive development through schemes like SCA, Eklavya schools, Roshni Yojana, and road connectivity in tribal areas. With major surrenders and the use of modern surveillance, Naxal influence is declining.

Still, the movement teaches a crucial lesson: When dreams are denied and voices are unheard, rebellion becomes inevitable. If the state listens, empowers, and uplifts the ignored, Naxalism may truly end.
