Batman wanted to test the Young Justice team and, with the help of Justice League member Phantom, set it all up. The team was to follow Phantom into an abandoned research lab cut off from civilization and look for whatever it was being researched there. The plan was simple, while the team searched through the base, Phantom would go intangible to search the areas the team couldn't. 15 minutes into the mission and the real test began.

"Change of plans." Batman's voice rang through the Team's comms, stopping them in their tracks. "Phantom has found what it is you all were looking for. But it did something and I lost contact with him. You're new mission is to find Phantom and figure out what happened to him."

The Team all understood the mission and got to work looking for Phantom, all the while Batman observed them through the camera system he had set up hours before.

"Did they believe it?" Phantom's voice came through a secondary comm just for him and Batman. The nature of this mission was entirely fabricated so that the team wouldn't suspect a thing. He nodded.

"Every word." Batman quickly replied as he watched the Team search through the facility, eventually splitting up to cover more ground. "Now it's your turn. Go wild."

Danny got lost in another universe and lost access to his main power set, keeping only some basics like minor super strength and intangibility. But before he could freak out, he met someone who he'd consider a great friend in the future, Thomas Wayne.

Lex Luthor didn't know what his Superman R&D division made. It looked like Kryptonite, but he knew that it was anything but. Usually, he would toss out any failures, but the knowledge of the previous rejects' failures were immediate. This stone was far from a failure, but far from a success. So until he knew what it was and what it did, he would hang onto it.

"Who made this?" Lex finally asked after what felt like an eternity of silence. He looked to the group of scientists and engineers who made up this division, waiting for one to speak up.

"I-it was me, sir..." A timid hand rose from one of the R&D members. The name 'Johnson' was written on his name tag. He stepped forward and went silent as he stared at his boss.

"Well?" Lex Luthor broke the silence, raising an eyebrow. "What is it?"

"I-I don't know, sir..." Johnson shrank into himself. "It's attempt #82 of synthetic Kryptonite, but...as you can see, we got something wildly different."

Johnson went silent again after informing Lex of the stone, but it looked like he had more to say. Lex rolled his hand in a 'keep going' motion and Johnson cleared his throat.

"W-we did a few analyses on the stone before you showed up and we found a fascinating energy signature." Johnson found more confidence as he continued. "It's unlike anything we've ever seen, sir. I'd love to analyze it more, but with our current understanding, it'd be impossible."

Lex hummed after hearing it. It sounded like, while interesting, the stone would be a waste. But before he could give the order to dispose of it, Johnson started speaking again.

"But we did find something online." Johnson pulled up a document of two individuals on his tablet and showed it to Lex. "These two doctors, Jack and Maddie Fenton, actually discovered this element and wrote a thesis about its potential uses about a decade ago. Unfortunately, they never got any funding for it since they kept mentioning 'ghosts'."

"But you think they could be useful?" Lex came to the conclusion as he read the document. Two doctors, married and with two children living in the middle of mid west America. Looking for funding for their research on "ghosts" and a theoretical portal to another dimension where the element, "ectoplasm" originates. Seems insane, but they were the only sources he has to understand this stone. He handed the tablet back to Johnson.

"Contact them. I'd love to meet them in person and maybe fund this...'ghost zone' portal."

One of Lex Luthor’s Superman R&D divisions, in an attempt to create artificial kryptonite, accidentally made artificial ectoplasm. The consequences of this are immediate.

He got the stranger's name the second time they bumped into each other, Danny. At first, he thought it was a coincidence.
