I used repeatedly the theme of stars for this request because, the first time I saw the film Afterlife, I couldn’t stop crying at the image of Egon’s ghost.

There was something so beautifully touching and at the same time utterly sad about realising that the one saving the world was Egon and his family. Because for a moment, when he was next to his team, he was not Egon. For a brief second I only saw Harold Ramis.

But as someone who has multiple diseases and is dying, I was also sobbing at the thought that, one day, we all will leave, and maybe, with a bit of luck, join the stars.

There’s a comfort in thinking that, in the end, I am entwined into the constellation of those I love and those who love me. And I am extremely grateful for my little stars.

Another day, another rant (and in too much physical pain to do something else).

Each ghostbuster is essential to the team.

They all each represent something that, if taken out, would lead the group to perish (I’m thinking the Gozer and the Vigo battles).

First. Ray is the heart.

Across every films, he is the one that keeps the team alive (he buys the firehouse, continues the job on the second film…). He is the one who keeps holding on to wonder and compassion no matter how strange or dark things get. Yes, he is the one who chooses the “face of the Destructor” at the end of the first film, and look who it is : the stay puft marshmallow. He is gentleness, he is kindness. Even when faced with annihilation, he reaches for innocence, for something soft and sweet.

While others might see a haunting as a threat or a nuisance, Ray sees it completely differently, for him it’s a bridge : a last chance for peace, for forgiveness, for letting go. He literally opens a shop where he can help people to find closure. He is the one bringing back the team together, again and again.

Second. Winston is the soul.

Winston arrives a few weeks after the others have founded the Ghostbusters. But, my gosh, it’s when he gets there that they become the Ghostbusters.

He doesn’t need to see to believe, but he also doesn’t let belief cloud his sense of right and wrong. He asks the big questions : about God and the apocalypse with Ray, about life after death, about the cost of saving the world. He doesn’t need any scientific degree, he has the trust and belief in his team. And that’s more than enough for him.

At the beginning of the first film he says he would believe in anything as long as “there’s a steady paycheck in it.”. But in the end, he still stays. In the second film he still is with Ray at the birthday party and after that, Winston is the one who keeps the legacy alive.

Third. Peter is the arms.

He’s the handshake, the door-kick, the arm thrown around a friend’s shoulders. He’s the first to face down a ghost with nothing but a wild grin and a witty remark. And it would be easy to think of him only as Peter Venkman the chatter, the comical one.

But he is so much more. His arms keeping reaching outward throughout the first two films : and it’s to push, to pull, to provoke, but most of all : to protect.

Peter is the arms that catch his friends when they fall : the one who lifts them back up, even if he pretends he doesn’t care. He may roll his eyes at sentiment, but he’s the one who acts, who steps in, who gets his hands dirty when it counts.

Fourth. And we might think last but no. Egon. The brain.

Yes, everyone knows, Egon is the brain of the Ghostbusters, it’s not a big surprise. He is the “mad scientist”, the creator of the devices. We all are aware of it. But it’s more about how he uses his brain as his secret silent language to care and love.

Every plan he makes, every tool he builds, is for the sake of those he loves. He keeps the dangers at bay not just because he’s able, but because he can’t bear the thought of losing the people who matter most (let’s not enter the whole Afterlife discussion because I don’t even want to imagine how it felt like to care so much for everyone inside this massive haunted house).

Lastly, because she is the Ghostbusters too and without her there would be nothing : Janine. She is the ears.

The one who listens, truly listens, in a world too loud with chaos.

She’s the first point of contact for every desperate client, the doorstep between the public and the boys. Janine hears it all and stays. She could quit, she keeps repeating it in the first film : but she doesn’t. Because she adores them.

She is more than a secretary: she is a member of the team and a confidant. Her listening is active, fierce, protective of them. She is the ear that links everyone together.

Because, in the end, to answer the question : who you gonna call ? Not just the ghostbusters. But Janine Melnitz too.

Winston Zeddemore: the anchor, the one who listens, who adapts.

And, let’s be real, the man rocks that jumpsuit like no one else.

This gif tells so much about the characters, the way they wear and wield their equipment while at their first job at the hotel silently processing down the hallway with their proton packs on their backs.

Okay first. We have Peter.

He isn’t even holding his wand and still : he is the first to enter the hallway.

In the lift we are being told that the proton packs have not been tried yet, and it’s quite the significant information.

It shows their collective inexperience and a touch of recklessness (not due to a lack of want but definitely a lack of time - but let’s not speak about the short timeline of the movie here) as a whole team, yes, but there’s something revealing in Peter’s casual bravado.

As much as he is described as “doubtful” in the script, he still walks ahead, unarmed. It’s not for the show here - there is no crowd - it’s more about how he instinctively trusts Egon to shoulder the technical risks behind him. Peter’s confidence here is more about delegation and trust than it is about style. He’s for almost all of the movie considered as the face, the charm, the first impression; but here, in that first encounter, he becomes something unexpected : a casual protector, a shield. Peter is a man who deeply cares about Ray and Egon (and, later ,Winston too), and he hides it behind sarcasm. But in this gif, for a brief moment, we see him.

Second is Egon.

Every gesture is measured, both hands on the unfamiliar (yes it’s his creation - but it stays the first real time he is using it) weight of the proton wand : one on the trigger, one to stabilize the object. And unlike Peter’s open hands and casualness, Egon grips his equipment in both, as if the act of holding, calibrating, and controlling is itself a comfort. But he is also very tense about it, we can see it later in the script when it says :

But to go back to the gif - his eyes flick everywhere : he is into the unknown here, out of the comfort of his lab, of his indoors experiences - it’s outside and it’s real. And there’s that little pop of his collar who becomes throughout that film and the second one an unconscious ritual - as if he pulling a piece of his uniform ordered the world around himself, making the chaos feel just a bit less alien (but for a deeper dive into it go on @1920secretsociety page).

For Egon, caution isn’t fear. It’s a form of care that we can see it in the gif. It’s for the science and for his friends.

And then there’s where Egon stands : in the middle, in between Peter and Ray. It isn’t accidental. In that moment, Egon is both shield and shielded, the axis around which their trio turns. Peter strides ahead, Ray follows at his back, and Egon is held between them—trusted to keep them safe, but also quietly cared for, their irreplaceable center, the one neither wants to lose.

And last, Ray.

There is so much to say about him. Right before this gif, he is the first one to go out of the lift : he is already prepared, proton wand in hand. He is the heart of the team, the loyal, the one we can always trust and count on. And the fact that he goes out first - it says everything about him but, again, another rant for another day.

In this gif, though, Ray takes up the rear, and there’s something quietly profound about it. It’s as if, by being behind Peter and Egon, he’s making sure no one gets left behind. Ray’s grip is firm, but there’s a gentleness in it. He watches over Egon and Peter, ready to follow wherever the science leads, yet always present, always steady.

And then, there are the Ecto Goggles on his head : he is the only one who wears them, and it’s so perfectly him. He’s not just ready to chase the ghosts everyone else can see; he’s prepared to search for the ones no one else even believes in (something that we can see more throughout the rest of the films - he is eager to discover, to learn, to meet). In that way, Ray isn’t just the team’s heart : he is also symbolically its eyes : open wide to every impossibility (specially these ones).

In just a gif, we can see the very soul of the Ghostbusters. Three men and their untested proton packs ready to face danger because they love each other so much and trust so deeply. They don’t need words : everything is written in their posture, in the way they carry themselves and each other.

For a little moment here, we can see it : when facing the unthinkable, none of them ever has to walk alone.
