also, my perspective is an american one. I have NO clue what the conversion rate for non-american watcher fans will be.

I am seeing a lot of folk compare Watcher to Good Mythical Morning, and I think it’s a decent comparison to make considering their longevity on Youtube. The argument is that if GMM isn’t putting their content behind a Paywall then Watcher has no excuse

and honestly? I’m inclined to agree.

Here’s the thing - is Watcher going to have the same level of incentive? Like, that’s more than just “oh you get to watch our content.”

From what I see, GMM’s is more set up like a Patreon which is likely WHY it’s been successful. I found a reddit post from 2 years ago saying they had about 10k supporters (which has likely increased).

Watchers Patreon has currently 11k members. IDK i’m just saying they could’ve done something like this instead. Even though GMM’s style is different from Watcher.

Watcher Rant

I know I literally never post on here, but I wanted to talk about how stupid the new Watcher announcement is, as someone who pays $6 a week for Dropout. Every week, Dropout releases about 5 episodes a week. Watcher releases one. I end up watching about 3+ hours a week of NEW content on dropout (D20, Adventuring party, game changer, etc.) Considering moving to a sub-model will be a huge hurdle already, there’s no way Watcher is, off the bat, going to start making more content. Most big streaming services aren’t even making a profit yet. It’ll probably be months, if not years before Watcher does (if they even last long enough). 

Another thing is that Shane and Ryan are really Youtube Guys. I don’t think they realize this? They don’t need big budget shows. Mystery Files is probably my favorite show of theirs and it seems to be pretty low budget. People watch them because of their personalities. Most of their shows DON’T need to be ‘high budget.’ I think the Try Guys are pretty good about this. They’re still pretty down to earth. Most of their videos aren’t extremely high budget, from what I can tell. They still rely on their big personalities and occasionally, risky, but unique ideas. 

I know this definitely isn’t the thing Watcher wants to hear, but they SIMPLY NEED to DOWNSIZE. (Or at least reconsider their budget/business model) It’s sad to say, but it’s kind of hard to watch them act like they’re going to become something bigger than Youtube, when their content is BUILT for youtube. I don’t think they’re ever going to realize this though. I love Ryan and Shane, they’re amazing comedians and a wonderful duo, but no one on their team seems to know how to properly run this business. 

Lastly, and most awkwardly, what the hell is Steven Lim doing? I don’t watch any of his shows, but I guess he’s the CEO, and that means he has to shoulder most of the backlash for this decision. I would be less critical of him, but I guess he literally bragged about owning a Tesla? This is a really strange business decision, dude. 

Also, it’s super funny in retrospect that now they’re gaslighting us about saying they were going to take all of their old content off of youtube and then immediately backtracking.

I know I said not to think too deeply about it on my last Mask and Fi drawing [THIS] but... I thought too deeply about it, augh. Their relationship is so complicated but I wanted to show another side of it. Hopefully I managed it here.

Fi may not have understood the animosity Mask showed towards her back in the war, but that's not the case after everything. And even if they have a bond now (kind of) it's... messy. And it's not like Mask has the stones to open the door (nor does he think he should, what with what happened last time he did). So... yeah...

It's a bit bittersweet and there's still resentment there. Just. Complicated.

Okay, I need to say something regarding the whole mischaracterization thing. There is a difference between headcanons and mischaracterization. And there’s a difference between not liking your favorite characters being mischaracterized, and being just outright unkind, intolerant, and an awful human. Be kind to each other, and if there’s something you don’t like, and I cannot stress this enough,

I wanna talk about something real quick.

Ok warning I go off on a tangent about fanon legend.

TLDR:Legend isn’t a prick; he’s just jaded, his teasing is from a place of love, and the “rivalry” between him and wars is brotherly and legend is actually extremely compassionate, people just take one small trait and act like it’s the entire personality.

People love to act like Legend’s such a major prick but when you reread LU, he’s really not. Legend’s actually pretty nice. Yeah you can call back to when sky talked about how he doesn’t pay much attention to his attitude, i get that—he doesn’t pay much attention, but he’s not as big a prick as his fanon version suggests. I noticed this when I was watching those LU as tiktoks/vines/random vids on my phone videos on YouTube. Legend’s always made out to be the world’s biggest douche to Wars and yeah I get it’s exaggerated but it’s made out like they hate each other. They don’t in the slightest. I’ve seen genuine siblings who act worse to each other—firsthand. I’m the eldest in my sibling group and have two younger brothers who show no mercy to neither each other nor me, I’ve been insulted by them more than anyone. Legend loves these guys. I think the only reason he can sometimes act like a jerk is one, he doesn’t notice it and two, he most likely tries to keep everyone at arms length because he’s lost people close to him and doesn’t want to go through that again. He’s not some shallow prick—he cares deeply. Take for example in the comic about mipha’s diary. Wild says “I know you love to tease” tease implies just joking around, for one, and two when wild tells him it was Mipha’s, Legend says “ ‘was,’ sorry to hear that” and wild tries to brush it off and he goes “no, i really mean it. I’m sorry to hear that.”

It brings wild some solace. Legend knows loss and he’s not heartless. He knows where people’s limits are and teases lovingly—for some people that’s a love language. My cousin and his best friend are like that, they tease relentlessly but know it’s all out of love. Another instance—legend and Hyrule seem to be two of the closest out of the group. He’s protective over him and a direct call to that is when they were fighting the shadow and Hyrule tries to jump in the fight and Legend grabs his arm

The point to this entire post is that Legend’s only trait isn’t that he’s some prick. He’s so much more complex than that. His teasing is from a place of love, he doesn’t hate Wars like fanon would suggest and honestly their “rivalry”(and it’s a stretch to call it that) is brotherly if anything and his sourness would mainly be an attempt to keep folks at arms length because he doesn’t want to be hurt again.

Mischaracterization is so deeply rooted. Legend is so nice. People take one slight trait and make it a whole personality. Give an inch and folks take a mile😔
