Jaune fans and haters both make the same mistake in that they vastly overestimate the character’s effect on the entire series

“He’s just a self-insert!” this is an entire company built on self-inserts

“He’s got massive game and is the axis upon which everything spins” even he wouldn’t agree with that first one and several of his big moments are just him being the closest guy at the worst time

There’s a “theory” going around he was meant to be Ozpin’s original vessel, to which I say, name a significant interaction those two had, by themselves. We know what this show’s foreshadowing looks like and unless I’m forgetting something, they didn’t indicate anything in that direction at all

Jaune is just A Guy (who could’ve been dialed back early on, but separate convo), and he’s not even real. Quit beefing w that white boy, he’s doing his best

Shogun gets a lot of good mileage out of its language barrier, possibly because the characters aren’t really doing it with any sense of disdain. Sometimes they just straight up forget the other person can’t speak what they do

So often in media, a language barrier is played for laughs and has one (or both) parties shouting at each other or wildly gesticulating. That happens a little bit in Shogun because Blackthorne’s On One in the anjin, but then you see everyone make genuine efforts to try and communicate with the other person. They tell them a specific word to use as shorthand, they think about how best to describe it, it’s v good stuff and I like the scenes where a translated conversation is just a back and forth without the translator being included
