Vacuan Nights, Like Vacuan Days

They’re just so great together! I’d love for Jaune and Weiss to get a little downtime in Vacuo to live out a moment like this. They really deserve it, and I’d love to see Jaune’s guitar make a reappearance.

The comic here was inspired by u/Silverstar1243’s excellent piece of art, A Serenade Under the Moonlight. Send some love to them on their twitter, commission some art if you’re willing and able, they’ve made some great stuff.

You folks may have noticed I threw in a couple of references for those in the know; the Golden Oreos behind Yang (double stuffed, I might add) for the trio’s ship, Weiss liking it rough for Mallobaude’s great fic, and of course I made a whole theme around the Arabian Nights Disney song. A song, along with its Aladdin compatriots, which I spent the better part of a day finding covers for just to listen to on repeat while I worked.

This one’s now officially my longest comic project, with 14 panels, two over the past record since I added the White Knight kiss at the end. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Not sure I’d say it was more difficult than my Vanity of Vanities post, but for this one I actually knew how to use my editing software going into it (at least somewhat).

Put a lot of work into this one, been working on it on and off since February. Took a few breaks for vacation, to make my memorial post for Rooster Teeth, and another five meme edits or so, but I came back around to it. First half was pretty easy, relatively minor edits inserting characters into scenes and so on. The second half with Jaune and Weiss was tougher though, with color correcting, merging poses, redrawing features, drawing Jaune’s entire head to fix some lighting issues, etc. Really like how the edit to make Jaune strum his guitar turned out.

The time it took to make the whole comic got me down a little, until I did a bit of math. Including my side projects since starting this, all the scripting and editing and all, I’ve been pumping out a panel every two days. That seems pretty good to me, that kind of accomplishment makes me a little proud of myself.

Really need to get around to watching the second part of the Justice League Crossover movies. It’s got a few Vacuo scenes that might make things a little more authentic instead of me just using Saphron’s house and pretending it’s a suite in Vacuo. I do love taking yet more character stills from Jaune and friends experiencing deep trauma and turning it into something positive, been making that a bit of a personal habit. And I’ve got to say, the background for Jaune and Weiss’ scene is really beautiful, pulled it from when Sun and Neptune hear Ruby’s message about Salem. That’s just a really good shot all on its own, I even saved a copy for my computer’s wallpaper after editing out the two.

Posting a big RWBY White Knight edit, watching not one but two RWBY Beyond episodes, and all on the trail of the news that RWBY’s found partners that they’re negotiating with and that the creative team is expected to stay on. And I'm sipping bubble tea. Life is good.

Anyway, pardon the long write up. I’m invested in this one, and am quite pleased with how the comic turned out. I hope you all get a kick out of it as well!

CRWBY reassuring us that negotiations and talks have been going well and that they are in the process of finding a new home for RWBY makes me so happy. I think what makes me even happier was when talking about it on the stream they implied that it wouldn't be just a volume 10 thing and that there's a possibility for the show to go on past V10. Like they just sounded so positive about the whole thing and it makes me so happy to see that RWBY isn't going anywhere and that this story will continue.

One of my wishes for volume 10 has always been seeing Winter and Emerald being friends, tbh.

I've said it a good bunch of times, but it's just that Winter and Cinder have A LOT of parallelisms between each other: both of grew up in abusive homes and once they were out they ended up stuck with another new parental figure that turned out to be an asshole as well, both of them are Maidens and were 'chosen' for the job, both of them are named after the seasons they represent... The differences are that:

-Winter realized what Ironwood was really like and got out, while Cinder is still stuck with Salem.

-While Cinder had to steal the Maiden powers and got them in a way that makes her be more under Salem's control, Winter got them naturally and as a gift from a friend (Penny) and after she was out of Ironwood's control; in fact, those powers actually save her life against him and help her fully break free, making it clear that he didn't choose anything for her.

-Cinder's surname is Fall; it's heavily implied that she chose it herself, because as you guys know, she's obsessed with destiny, and she feels like being the Fall Maiden was her destiny-- you know the whole thing. Meanwhile, you have a Winter Maiden named Winter, and not because she chose her name like Cinder did to fit in the narrative: she was given the name at birth-- almost like she was destined to become the Winter Maiden one day.

And more. So yeah, they have a lot of parallelisms with each other: really, in a sense, they're the same and the complete opposite at the same time. I feel like Cinder sees Winter as a version of herself that actually got everything handed to her: name, destiny and all. So another parallelism what I would find entertaining is seeing that Emerald, who cared about Cinder and very clearly saw her as an older sister or role model or whatever, becoming close with Winter and starting to see her as what she thought Cinder was. Seeing Cinder's reaction to that would be funny at least lmao.

I know this is NOT a popular take in the RWBY FNDM but y’all…I love Jaune Arc. He’s such a refreshing, interesting male character.

He’s Ruby’s best friend, and the two of them parallel each other in such FASCINATING ways. I’m planning a full video essay on this but as some examples:

1) They both have hero complexes, obviously.

2) Ruby is a prodigy who earns her place at beacon two years early, while Jaune cheated his way in and needs to work constantly outside of his school training to be anywhere near capable of huntsmen level combat

3) Jaune’s pain is loud and disruptive, Ruby’s pain is quiet and suppressed (examining their respective expressions of pain through the lens of gender expectations is REALLY interesting)

4) Ruby inherits silver eyes, an invaluable tool in fighting Grimm. Jaune inherited a regular sword, heavily outclassed by most of his peers.

5) Ruby made her weapon but modeled it after her mentor, Jaune had a hand-me-down

6) Ruby leads by developing plans and taking action, Jaune leads by supporting his team and bolstering their strengths with his own.

I’m sure there’s more too but those parallels are why their conflicts in vol 9 work so well for me, they are partners in narrative from literally the second episode.

I also just adore the commentary on masculinity with Jaune. From day one he was deconstructing traditional ideas of masculinity and patriarchal concepts of heroism.

The way he has to learn to reject so many of the things that blockbusters with men at the center have been pushing for decades is fantastic. He tried to pursue revenge like John Wick or Iron Man and it went HORRIBLY.

He can fight when necessary but it’s not where his true strength lies and that’s SO COOL for a male character.

I dunno y’all I just think he doesn’t deserve the hate. He doesn’t butt in on other stories nearly as much as people claim—in terms of Ruby, he actually serves her story quite a bit—and he is a character worth following in and of himself.

Jaune: …oh, and I forgot to mention the crushing feeling that I couldn’t protect my loved ones!

Oscar: That sounds horrible!
