What exactly classifies as a gimmick blog?

This is actually quite a contentious question nowadays. For those that want to read a unjustifiably complicated typology for gimmick blogs, here you are:

After thinking over it for a while, this is the best definition I can come up with for the prototypical gimmick blog.

Gimmick blog /'gɪmɪk blɑg/ n. A blog on the social media site Tumblr dedicated towards posting or responding in a specific and defined way, often repetitive, with little to no indication it is run anthropogenically. (Alternatively, Eugimmick blog)

The more attentive of you will notice that many blogs I've classified do not satisfy this definition. In fact, neither do I.

Therefore, I have a number of other terms in mind, two of which I currently classify and one which I do not. (not going to do the fancy definitions for these)

Quasi-gimmick blog - A blog on the social media site Tumblr dedicated towards posting and responding in a specific way, often creating content for this purpose, and ostensively run anthropogenically.

Ex: @gimmickblog-taxonomist

Paragimmmick blog - A blog on the social media site Tumblr resembling a gimmick blog on surface appearance, but serve a different function, usually a roleplay blog. Often descended from a Eugimmick or Quasi-gimmick blog.

Ex: @status-updates (Previously a Eugimmick blog)

Pseudogimmick blog - A blog on the social media site Tumblr looking to be a gimmick blog, but often is a conventional user educated/passionate about a certain subject, usually a product or government organization. Varying amounts of posts concern the subject, and many resemble a prototypical Tumblr post.

Ex: @amtrak-official, @mozilla-firefox

The only one I will not be classifying is the Pseudogimmick blog. And, keep in mind, Gimmick blog will be used as an umbrella term for most, if not all, terms on this list. If it must be distinguished from the other, I will use "Eugimmick blog".

gimmick blogs i see that are not listed in ur pinned:

(x)-culture-is: most of these blogs surround queer identities or mental illnesses/neurodivergencies but there are some outliers like nonhuman-culture-is, no-empathy-culture-is, therian-culture-is, alterhuman-culture-is

our-(x)-experience: i see this only for queer identities. kind of similar to culture is blogs. ex: our-multigender-experience

question: are inactive blogs considered extinct species? or is that only for deleted blogs

Generally, I consider inactive blogs extinct. Occasionally I'll label a blog I think may come back with "Endangered".

I'm turning myself in; can you do a tree on the "I throw X at Y people" blogs? This sort of gimmick almost went extinct, what with I throw pies at short people and I throw pies at tall people having deactivated (or maybe dormant, not sure). Recently, two violent, yet still closely related gimmicks have been spotted. One claims to throw rocks at short people, while the other burns tall people at the stake.

Would you consider the new subreddit-themed blogs popping up to be gimmick blogs?

Some of them are basically just ask blogs (like @/am-i-the-asshole-official, @/no-stupid-questions-official, @/confessions-official are the bigger ones that I can think of), but some of the newer ones aren't even ask blogs, which kind of makes it seem more gimmick-y?

I would generally consider any blog that dedicates itself to some sort of gimmick- i.e., roleplaying as potatoes, fashioning oneself as a wizard, or emulating a subreddit as, yes, a gimmick blog.

Hi. Do you collect potato blogs not related to said family or one family only? I know some not related?

I mean, if they're potato blogs they are most likely part of the Tuberosae family. I'm on forced break from taxonomy (school with ADHD sucks. who knew) but whenever I have free time and feel motivated my first goal is to fix any issues with current trees, make small additions, and work on the website.

Hello! Thank you for the potato tree. I noticed that you've mislabelled miku potato and missed a couple of them such as sparkle, clown, and I count potatoes, but the individual names you've given to all of us are so cool! How do you come up with them?

I'm a former Latin student, so in combination with the ICZN and an Ancient Greek dictionary, naming is pretty easy. I usually either draw from the username, i.e. @/neutral-potato-or-not-idfk becomes Patatis neutralis, or from a trait that the profile picture or blog theme seems to have.

Thank you! I fear the wizards the worst. Not just because they are (most likely) the largest, but because many of the blogs only partially participate in wizardblogging, so I'll have to define "gimmick blog" to even begin. I sympathize with my poor laptop that will have to run the massive genus trees for that one.

Family Tuberosae is catalogued! Thank you to @anti-potato for the provided list of potatos. The tree will be on the site (most definitely unreadable on tumblr) sometime today. If anyone has any info on the Snom family, that would be appreciated :).
