Road Trip '25 Recap
An extension of the May baseball trip, the great 2025 road trip back north was necessary so we could retrieve John. It was the first big test for the Kia Carnival. As usual, I made plans to stop off at work locations and break the trip up. Wednesday, June 11: Destination Dallas I headed three hours north on my own around 1:00 Wednesday, braving the cutthroat driving of I-35 through the Dallas…

Great Lakes Baseball Trip Recap
Boring Backstory Because I get antsy sitting still for a couple months straight, we tapped back into our travel fund for a family vacation to the Great Lakes region, centered largely around checking more baseball stadiums off the list. I spent many hours planning over the course of months—really from the moment the 2025 MLB schedule was released—searching for the optimal route where multiple…

May Update: Great Lakes Trip, Baseball Season, House Plans, Dog, Podcast
Greetings, friends. Here’s the latest from ATX. Travel Plans The school year and baseball seasons are nearly over, and we have been busily coming up with our summer plans. The day after school gets out, the family is flying to Cincinnati. We’ll spend two nights there, taking in a pair of Reds games. Next, we rent a car and drive up to Columbus where we’ll spend the day hanging out with our old…

2025 MLB Predictions
My annual MLB predictions are back! In 2024, I correctly predicted the Dodgers would win the World Series, only I had guessed Orioles as their opponent. Earlier this decade I correctly predicted the exact World Series matchups and outcomes twice—Braves over Astros in 2021 and Dodgers over Rays in 2020. Overall in 2024, my playoff predictions were horrible, correctly predicting only 6 of the 12…

Valentine's Day Update
Let’s see, what’s happened around here of late… John got a lip bumper put in as a precursor to braces. This thing should gently push his teeth back to make room for them to grow. Lauren and I successfully closed out Dry January. On the 31st we went out for a Thai dinner with the Plumpes and brought the dog. On February 1 we celebrated Lauren’s birthday by hosting a gathering here at the house.…

Last Few Months
Soccer Aside from John in baseball, which I recapped thoroughly yesterday, Edie switched to soccer for the fall. One teeball season per year is enough for her! She was in a boys’ 7U division so she could play alongside good friend Brexton. She didn’t score any goals (for the right team, anyway) but she had fun and the team had its share of wins! I didn’t get to see her play all that often…

August: Birthdays, School, Etc.
#42 on the Lake I turned 42 in August, a momentous occasion that needed to be celebrated to the max! Well, it didn’t need to be, but Lauren made sure that it was! I took three work days off that week—Thursday the 22nd for a “mental health day” which I dearly needed; Friday the 23rd for the birthday festivities; and then Monday the 26th for legitimate catching up on errands and appointments. We…

Midwest Road Trip '24
Another year, another big trip back up to the Midwest! Sometimes we travel by plane, others by car. Last summer we did two separate trips to MN and SD, each by plane. This year, we figured it was time to hit the open roads again and see if the old Chrysler was up to the task. The basis of the trip was for Steve’s memorial service/celebration of life, but in all likelihood we’d have visited…

Home Renovations
In December, I tried to fix a running toilet in the master bathroom upstairs. My repair attempts did not work, so I decided to fully replace the old toilet with a new one. I watched several YouTube videos on how easy it is to remove an old toilet and install a new one. I tried to do it myself. I actually had it uninstalled, but went a step too far and did some serious damage, busting a pipe under…

May Update
Between murders, layoffs, prolonged construction, oppressive spring heat, Airbnb drama, summer camps, John’s baseball travel and more, it seems like things have been a bit hectic around here of late. Yep, there was a murder in the immediate neighborhood. At 3:54am on the 20th, a neighbor in his 40s walking his elderly dog in the middle of the night stumbled upon the burglary of his own pickup in…

Picking a Twins Alternative
John has gotten very into following MLB over the last few years. He and I of course follow the Twins religiously through ups and downs. Every morning while getting ready for school we watch MLB’s “Recap Rundown”, expanded highlights of every game from the previous day. On weekends and evenings he’s playing MLB The Show: Road To The Show, guiding his created player through the minors. And what…

April Update
After a relatively quiet March, things are picking up around here. In fact, as I write this, we are currently at Kalahari Resorts in Round Rock for a quick one-night stay, just a twenty minute drive from home. Kalahari is the nation’s biggest indoor waterpark (235,000 square feet). We’ve heard such great things from local friends, but it’s so damn expensive most of the time. It’s actually cheaper…

2024 MLB Predictions
My annual MLB predictions are back, and after two astounding years of exactly predicting the World Series outcomes Braves over Astros in 2021, and Dodgers over Rays in 2020, I came back down to earth with a very incorrect Brewers/Blue Jays guess in 2022, and another poor prediction in Astros/Padres in 2023. I did get over half the playoff teams correct last year, at least, including the Rangers,…

Happy Leap Day! House Turns 40 & Other News
Today we celebrate Leap Day, and for just the third time in his life, John’s half-birthday! We celebrated last night by getting delivery from a restaurant of both kids’ choosing, which is no easy task. Edie said “Five Guys at Freddy’s”, confusing the restaurant and the movie, to which John happily agreed. For me and two kids to have burgers delivered was $70!! Seems insane. Anyway, onto a bigger…
