Where Joy Hides - A TED Radio Hour
While not about glass, we thought we would share this TED talk about joy.
From NPR:
" When we focus so much on achievement and success, it's easy to lose sight of joy. This hour, TED speakers search for joy in unexpected places, and explain why it's crucial to a fulfilling life. Speakers include inventor Simone Giertz, designer Ingrid Fetell Lee, journalist David Baron, and musician Meklit Hadero."
We hope this talk inspires you to find joy in places you would not normally look and use these times to enjoy life.

Seagull Repair!
Seagull repair? Whatever could that mean? Here at the shop, we provide some unique glass services, and this includes repairing glass figures. Our wonderful client brought in a pair of amazing glass seagulls who's feet had broken off. Using a UV-cured adhesive, we reattached the feet for a strong fit! Check out the before and after images!

Glass facts: State of Matter
We wanted to start a series on some glass facts to share and give you guys an opportunity to ask questions! Today's facts are about glass and what state of matter it is. While it is usually a solid and because of how older glass is thicker at the bottom, some think it is a very slow moving liquid, but it is actually an amorphous solid! If you remember science class, the molecules in solids are formed into a rigid organized system and liquid molecules flow to fill their container and a more loose system. Glass is somewhere in between. The molecules are not as organized, but they lack the usual flow of liquids. And of course, super heated glass has it's own liquid state such as in glass blowing! For more information and to learn about super-cooled liquids see: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/fact-fiction-glass-liquid/ #glassfacts #science #statesofmatter #glass

The colored glass in stained glass is created when certain minerals are added and substances are added to the glass melt. Color can also be painted directly onto the glass and fired afterwards, both techniques that we use! This link highlights additives put in the glass melt and what colors are created (or removed!) with them. In fact, before these additives were as easily available, you could tell what group made what glass based on what colors they use! (more on that later!)
Thanks to the talented artists and experimenters of the past, we are able to have many brilliant and wonderful colors that can stand up to the elements!
For example, cobalt oxide will give you a blue-purple while sulfur creates a yellow amber. I find the whole process from start to finish fascinating and will try to share plenty of information here!
