just saw yet another post about how dean isn't stupid, he just didn't get a good education, and

a GED is a perfectly good education, and

is there literally a single person anywhere that thinks dean is stupid?? he's very obviously smart and the text treats him like he's smart and obvs i see a lot of criticisms of dean and make a few select ones myself, but i dont recall ever seeing anyone saying 'stupid' is one of his flaws?

i feel like there's something interesting going on here, but i can't quite put my finger on what specifically it is. like, probably a piece of it is insecurity in the complaining fans around issues of class, but also i feel like the text itself is the originator of the issue despite treating him in practice like he's heroically working-class-smart. Like in Dean's "ex-blood junkie, high school drop out, and Mr Comatose" formulation of TFW, blood junkie is actually disapproved of by the text, and despite claiming otherwise, on some level maybe high school drop out is too.

I do like to delve deeper into SPN wrt ‘social issues and influences’ in the show, although don’t think it’s necessary in that. Like always it’s very do what you like forever<3 however I do think it is very much an example of learning to be more critical with the media you consume and is useful to unpack one’s own perspectives. it’s also very fun, idk about the rest of you but I have a lot of fun with it

Mary/Azazel (ft. SamuelMary) fic excerpt

The first rule Mary’s dad ever taught her was to never talk to strangers, one she learned in how her father would push her behind his back when strange eyes looked towards her and the way he’d open her bedroom door at who-knows-o'clock every night to check on her. She had been a child with little knowledge of the world outside her family, and her dad, who knew much about the world, was always scared of what it would do to her if he wasn’t there to protect. Therefore, he always had to be there, never too far that something else could take advantage of his absence.

Mary grew alongside her father’s list of hunting rules, she shaped by them as they were by her, shaped into a perfect daughter, looking to her father’s rules for guidance in his rare absence; this way she would never be lost (at least, until she grew wilful, less perfect daughter, more prodigal son).

She could still remember what he had said when she was a small child, large hands calloused by decades of their hidden war, on her birdlike shoulders. “There’s evil in this world, Mary. Kinds of evil you couldn’t begin to imagine,” his manner as stern as his touch was gentle. “What I’ve taught you doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface.”

“Samuel-“ her mother tried interrupting, her soft face twisting into a frown. Her hand reached out to her daughter, only for those already on her to tighten, calloused fingers digging in. Deanna withdrew as if burned, frown deepening.

“She needs to know.” And that was that; they all knew what Daddy says goes.

After a few years, ‘never talk to strangers’ shifted into something like ‘avoid needless interactions with strangers’ and then ‘just be careful, Mary, please’. But at its core, her dad was adamant that there were strangers and there was family; and at the end of the day you could only trust family.

As Mary started school and sleepovers and sneaking out, and her father could barely do more than just purse his lips and shake his head. And then she brought home a boy, bright-eyed and polite, one who never once lost his composure even as her father grunted and glared, interrogating and snubbing until Mary couldn’t take it and excused herself and John, avoiding facing her father’s stormy expression with her own.

That night as Mary got ready for bed, her father once again reminded of that old rule.

“John may be a nice civilian, but Mary, he’s not like us. I’m not trying to be mean, but that’s just the way it is. He’ll never understand this family. Family, Mary—you’ve seemed to have forgotten that.”

That’s how Mary grew up; taught that the world around her was not as it seemed. There were monsters of all kinds, and while her dad extensively taught her how to identify and deal with them, some are so good at blending in that if you let your guard down for even a second, and a second is all they need, it’ll already be too late. Either they’ll kill you; or worse they won’t.

You can’t trust anyone outside your family.

Ever.

if sam winchester had grindr he would only get hookups with people who have a thing for cheating and one day he goes to cas like why the hell does this keep happening to me. this is like the 6th hookup ive had where the guy's spouse walks in on us i swear i just keep getting guys who have a thing for cheating. and cas is like ok well let me look at your profile to give you an objective opinion on why i think that's happening. and then when you look at sam's photos they're all photos he's taken with dean, but dean's cropped out because the profile is sam's but you can still see dean's hand like slung over his shoulders. or they're standing so close their shoulders r touching. or dean's standing like a little bit in front of him. and cas goes back to sam like. All the photos on your profile have dean in them sam. what the Fuck did you expect. these people think you're also cheating. and sam's like well those r the only photos i have cas :(

dean accidentally downloads grindr because it got recommended when he looked up dating/hookup apps. turns out its all guys and he finds sam on it because sam is the closest and sam thought grindr was safe bc why would dean get on there. dean confronts sam who thinks dean is gonna hate him for liking men but instead dean just goes like.
