#NewMutants day! We won't be going out to the theaters for a good while, so we look forward to its digital release. It's bittersweet and silly to feel like we had any proprietary connection to this movie or the comics, but there's a little bit of that.

I wanted to bring up again an issue that I've addressed a few times online, the mistake I made in casting a light-skinned person as Sunspot/Roberto DaCosta for our music video.

We had a very small independent and entirely unsanctioned under-the-radar production working off a self-funded, shoestring budget, racing against a protracted timeline.

Casting such a giant cast (for me) with so many logistical and creative requirements was a huge undertaking, and I felt a huge responsibility to make good on it. Casting Roberto was the hardest part of that process, he was literally the last person cast, days before production.

None of that amounts to an excuse, because we were looking for Bobby from the wrong angle to begin with.

As with all the cast, they had to look young enough to play high school, and I wanted them to be of proportional height to each other. I also specified race for each character, because that was important. But here was Bobby's:

His being a dark-skinned AFRO-Brazilian is right there in his first appearance in the New Mutants graphic novel, an important part of his storyline, and one I should have referenced more closely. It’s there in his artistic portrayal in the issues I DID reference (by Bob McLeod and Bill Sienkiewicz).

I'm deeply ashamed that I didn't acknowledge it, at least not with same level of care I placed when casting of the other characters.

I believe I got our final actor from a recommendation after none of the submissions panned out. But again, none of this matters because I should have reached out to a broader community of actors. I shouldn't have rushed the process. I should have known better.

The fault lies entirely with me as the writer, producer, and director, and whatever continued criticism I get will always be warranted. I accept all the blame, and certainly none should go towards anyone else in the cast or the production. I'm deeply proud of their contributions.

I can't make any comments with regards to Bobby's portrayal in other media (comics and movies), other than that we all need to do better, and should be held accountable when we don't. I'm really sorry.

Wedding Cake Championship (2018) - Cake Sketches . I've always wanted to do those sketches in baking/cooking shows, but I realize now that they are HARD! The point is to show the difference between what they planned vs. what they actually accomplished, and sometimes the two are so different that you have little frame of reference other than their vague descriptions (some shows have the bakers make their own sketch but I didn't get that). . Also for a quick turnaround show like this one, your work is frontloaded because the first episode always has the MOST drawings, since nobody's been eliminated yet. I nearly wore my hand out on this first episode. . Not only that but I was still finding my drawing style at the beginning, and I wasn't entirely happy with how some of these turned out. Luckily as the episodes went on the workload got lighter, my drawing got better, and the cakes themselves also got better! . Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of my family coming to America in 1993. It was a terribly exciting time, not because the Philippines was a horrible place to be a kid (it was an idyllic first nine years), but because, among other reasons, the US was ground zero for COMICS. Fueled by the same early 90s comic resurgence that started in the US, my Filipino friends and I were obsessed with the X-Men, the trading cards, and, I recall vividly, INFINITY WAR. It was such a massive, epic story that (economically) gave us all our superheroes in one story, and sky-high stakes we could recognize even if the plot doesn't actually make much sense. (Also most of us didn't have the money to own all these comics ourselves, so we shared and traded them piecemeal amongst ourselves. I never actually owned the full six-issue set until adulthood.) This drawing I just did on a post-it note is based on a splash page in Infinity War 6, by Ron Lim and Al Milgrom. As a kid, I specifically remember an older schoolmate recreating it painstakingly on a large board. I was mesmerized by how good the drawing was, and odds are good it was better than my drawing here. This weekend Infinity War comes out in theaters. It will bear little resemblance to the comic (the two characters in this drawing do NOT appear in the movies). Nor will there be the X-Men, Silver Surfer, Doom, Galactus, Fantastic Four, not even Death. It's easy for me to be cynical, to nitpick and be a downer. I've routinely mitigated my disappointment by massively lowering my expectations. It's instinct at this point, I can't help myself. But with Infinity War it's different.
