Corona Break - Fear OR Learn
No school, no malls, and work from home can be a recipe for a very overwhelming home environment or though it may sound very insensitive, the present situation can be seen as a BLESSING- actually a BLESSING IN DISGUISE if we use the situation as an opportunity.
The fear and precautions to be taken are real and it may scare some of us and our dear ones but use the situation to teach and learn a very important life skill of being positive and persevere by doing what is in our control and making the best of the situation.
On one hand use it to know how we react to fear and learn to respond better, by not spreading fear and fact-checking, not stocking up unnecessarily leading to a shortage of essentials (groceries and medicine/sanitizer, mask) but do optimum consumption and avoid uncalled for panic.
As a parent, you may take care of your panic by-
• Avoiding unauthentic information on the virus
• Taking proper steps as told by the authority
• Do the regular activities individually, in isolation rather than not doing it at all
• Be positive – read, watch, listen to relaxing and positive content
• Stay in touch with friends and family virtually.
On the other hand can use this time together with the loved ones to reconnect and bond by spending quality time (cook, paint, play together) with the loved ones, make use of the slow pace of life we Mumbaikars are required to live for some time now. Can do some of the following –
• Get study done in the morning
• Do some online worksheets, exercise
• Watch some good movies or other content together and discuss
• Good time to do some art, craft, basic cooking, and other chores together
• Recount your childhood experiences and old memories to reconnect with your kids.
This summer not only beat the heat but COVID- 19
Let’s nail it this way:
C- Calm yourself and others
O- Offline pursuits
R- Rest and Meditate
O- Observe Discipline
N- Nourish with Healthy Food
A- Adjust positively
P- Pray
A- Abstain from Fake news
N- Nurture Nature
D- Do not spread Rumours
E- Exercise
M- Manage with Less
I- Innovate
C- Conquer Fears

Study Abroad In Finland
In this episode, Ms. Suchitra Surve talks about Finland as a destination for studying abroad. Finland is a Northern European nation bordering Sweden, Norway, and Russia. Its capital, Helsinki, occupies a peninsula and surrounding islands in the Baltic Sea. We generally find people of Finland speaking Finnish & Swedish i.e. two languages spoken by the inhabitants.
Among the Scandinavian countries, Finland has the coldest climate. The climate is characterized generally by long, cold winters and very short, mild, and moderately rainy summers. The Finnish education system is considered to be the topmost in education & is one of the cornerstones of the Finnish welfare society. This we need to know if we are planning to explore the country.
They pride themselves on an education system that offers equal opportunities for education for all. There are many Universities that offer higher scientific and artistic education, like every country there are Bachelor’s, Master’s, Postgraduate and Doctoral degrees available.
A typical Bachelor’s degree in Finland is for a duration of three years and a Master’s degree is for a duration of two years. Application Process: Finland is divided into two terms: Autumn term which begins from August/September to December and Spring term which is from January to the end of May. If you are planning to apply for a Bachelor's degree in Finland, you may be required to take the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test) and especially you are planning to apply to the University of Applied Sciences (UAS). As any other country, IELTS or TOEFL will be required to prove your English proficiency, irrespective of the level or type of study you are planning to undertake.
Additionally, you will also need to submit documents like a personal statement, academic transcripts, resume and reference letters. All this makes up the application packet for you. What do you go and study there? Most popular courses that we fine are Business, Health Care, Information Technology and Education. Annual tuition fees for full-degree students will be in the range from EUR 15,000 to EUR 20,000. The cost of Living though it depends on an individual will vary from - 700 to at least 1200 EUR a month.
The living cost will also be dependent on the area that you will live in. Helsinki is known to be one of the most expensive cities, so plan your budget accordingly. Like all the other countries students are interested to know what the scholarships available are. Scholarships available are on your academic excellence. The previous academic performance, possible letters of motivation are also required. In addition to this, the grounds presented by the applicants in their grant applications are also taken into consideration. So be very careful while making those letters.
After studying so much the typical question is do we get a job there? What is the placement scenario there? A recent study has actually identified Finland being the country where a work-life balance has been the best. Internships are a good gateway to employment and if you have a good grasp of Finnish language it will be helpful to you in getting jobs, in the majority of sectors.
Finland’s job market has few popular jobs available for graduate students in the field of: Electronics & Telecommunication, Export of Products, Health sector and so on. After graduation, the students will have to apply for residence permit extensions which will allow them to search for jobs. So be prepared in your mind accordingly. Where would you go and study? One of the most popular destinations is Helsinki. Helsinki is the capital of Finland and the most populous city in the country.
It is also known as the most expensive city with the most renowned modern design heritage which can be seen throughout. Tampere is Finland’s second-largest city area and the biggest inland city in the Nordic countries. Tampere is also known as the “Theatre Capital” of Finland.

Parenting - Social Skills - Part 2
In this episode, Ms. Swati Salunkhe continues exploring how parents can cater to social skills among their children. With listening, sharing and following instructions, one should be very cooperative.
Co-operation should start from home, be it with parents, grandparents, siblings or anyone near and around you. In today’s time, children find it very difficult to co-operate with anyone. Parents need to instruct them or they themselves should do it, as it helps the children to inculcate these habits in them. Family needs to work as a team so that children learn to do their work on their own from an early stage.
Communication is another positive important social aspect, which goes a long way in building up a child’s future. As a parent, if you observe any unruly behavior in your child, make sure you rectify it in an appropriate manner as it may end up taking a different shape altogether. Positive communication is important from both sides, from parent to child and child to parent and can be done in various ways. For example, Appreciation, Telling it assertively, make eye contact. One needs to understand, Friends on Facebook or on any other social media are virtual but it has to be in the real world and it can be developed by simple things like greeting someone with a smile, hello, good morning, good afternoon, sorry, thank you, etc can make a difference in your life long way. Social skills are an important aspect along with academic success and people miss social skills these days. Understand charity begins at home and we as parents need to understand and take a step in developing our social skills at home.

Parenting - Social Skills - Part 1
In this episode, Ms Swati Salunke discusses how parents can cater to social skills among their children. A lot of times parents share that their child is fantastic in academics, but somehow they lack in social skills.
To start with what do you mean by social skills, it’s not what you see online or in the virtual world but in the real world, now what could be the skills? Be it at home, society, school or at the workplace, there are certain skill sets which are required to be adapted, to adjust and make the most of it in our lives.
So to start with it, what could be those few social skills that we should talk about? When we talk about listening to the first questions which comes up is listening to that difficult? Listening is just not paying attention, listening is giving an eye to eye contact and giving time which a child requires from their formative age.
Parents need to set aside certain things which are not so important and If you are in between something explain it to them that you are in between something and you will definitely get back. Be it a child, elderly person or somebody who is doing a menial job or somebody who is authoritative. Listen; just listen to what the instruction is and what is expected and also something which is not said through the body language. Listening is a very important social skill. Followed with listening would be sharing.
A lot of time teenagers also tell “I can’t share so and so things with my parents or I can’t share so and so things with XYZ”. Yes, we do have our individual choices of sharing things, buy it is very important to share things in a day to day life. Have seen a lot of families with separate rooms, individual names written on the pillow cover, on the bed-sheet, on the towel, all the possible things child’s use, and when there are siblings or other relatives in the family, they say it’s mine, or I can’t give you my share of so and so things. It’s good to have your personal space but sharing is the most important human element.
A lot of time we come across families who say that my child doesn’t share, it is not only about things the child doesn’t share but the feelings too. So, how to show them share and care. Sharing starts right from early childhood these days, need not be something very specific, if it is not shared at home, the child finds it difficult to share things when the child goes in the school be it notes or any other school-related things.
Further, as they grow up they find it difficult to share their feelings or their true self. So start sharing feelings, remember charity begins at home. Right from the beginning if the child is used or is accustomed to the parents or the elderly people who are giving him /her certain instructions the child needs to obey it.
Most of the time when we obey certain rules be it being on time, or being properly dressed or certain kind of rituals that are followed in the family.Start it right from the beginning.

Media is one of the most fascinating careers and most sought after careers of today’s generation. Media has in tides all generations and it will always continue. Glamour, publicity, and the limelight are interesting facts about Media but have you ever wondered who makes this happen? In this episode, Ms. Suchitra Surve talks about the technical careers in media which are off-screen or we can say they are the magicians behind the screens, who make us believe in the make believe world of media.
You must have always heard most of the actors and actresses always acknowledge the technicians, the invisible man that makes the miracle happen the magic on screen. Talking on screen we have now moved from the big screen to television to the newer OTT platforms. But again the technicians have steadfast; nobody has been able to replace them. But obviously, the skills that are required now by these technicians are highly technologically driven and digitally driven. So let’s look at some of the fields which are part of the media. Some of the technical fields that are available in the media are Producer, Line Producer, Executive Producer, Director, Script Writer- Dialogue Writer, Cinematographer, Camera Operator. There is a production team as well it includes Project Head, Production Manager, Production Coordinator, Production Designer, Costume Designer, Folly Artist, Casting Directors, Music Directors- Back Ground Score Makers, The Lyricist, Sound Engineers, Chorographers, Junior Artist Coordinators, Action Designers which also Includes Action Coordinator, Stunt Artist, Editor, Colorists, VFX Supervisors, Publicity Designer, Distributors, PR, Make-Up Artist, Hair Stylist And Location Coordinator. This list is just the tip of the iceberg. There are much more involved in this team; probably we are not able to list them out, WHY – because there are too many of them. But the broad headings that have been identified here to help you decide which career you can take.
Many people are required to make a film or a television serial or web series, where do you get the jobs. You can find job opportunities in Films, Production Houses, and Television Channels. Now because of the OTT platforms, opportunities are also available on YouTube Channels, Media Houses, Corporate Houses, and Advertising Agencies, where these technicians can find either jobs or freelance or work on project bases. Though these skills project an idea or create a fiction/non-fiction story, on televisions or films or on the web remains the same. The approach, methodology, digital skills, and technical skills are way different. Today youngsters need to equip themselves with all the software, and technological platforms that can be used to showcase their talent. Opportunities are more, it’s the survival of the talented, and hence the completion is tiff. So whoever is interested in this field, needs to understand the sound understanding of the tool that you are using is essential., which means along with formal training hands-on training is essential, learning on the job, understanding the newness, is going to be far more impactful, rather than just arming yourself with the degree. Of course, having formal education always gives you an understanding of the theory and then you can apply your creativity.
So those who are interested in this field be ready for a challenging, creative, physically demanding sought of the field because to survive in this field it’s not only the skills but also your emotional stability, networking ability and ability to think beyond is required.

Adjusting To New Environment While Studying Abroad
Ms. Kunjal Sakhrani talks about how a student’s life can be both exciting and worrying. Exciting because you are taking a step ahead in life; worrying as you may be living alone for the first time. You will be meeting people, making new friends, eating new food and maybe even learning a new language. Once you reach a new country you will start noticing the differences in culture, the lifestyle immediately. Initially, you might find it difficult to understand and deal with these differences, but gradually you will be able to manage them.
The best way to get over your anxiety is to gather as much knowledge as possible about the country you are going to. Read up whatever information you can get on tourism websites, magazine articles, blogs, etc. As a student, it is important to be aware so you can adjust easily in your new environment. You cannot eliminate all surprises, but being aware will make the adjustment easier and faster.
Dealing with culture shock:
Culture shock is a natural reaction that people have in a new cultural environment. There is so much that is unfamiliar and scary that it is normal to get overwhelmed and homesick. The best way to get over the feeling is to make new friends. By friends, it doesn’t mean students of your own community and the local students, but also other international students. They are as new as you and will understand the problems you are facing. If you are in a non-English speaking country, learning and talking in the local language can make your life easy. Do make sure that you attend the orientation meeting that is organized for the new students at your university. This is the best way to meet batch mates, make friends, and get familiar with the university and the facilities provided.
Managing your Food:
Eating wholesome meals and maintaining a well-balanced diet becomes essential while living independently. Unfortunately, your family members will not be around to pamper you. You must remember that you will have quite a bit to study and it is important to remain healthy to be able to concentrate on your studies. Try and cook on your own meal this way you eat healthily and also save on the costs. Once you reach and settle down, look for an Indian store in the vicinity. You will be able to find basic Indian ingredients in such stores. Some shops also stock pre-cooked Indian dishes, frozen Indian bread, sweets, etc. and you should also try out the local cuisine too. Ask your local student friends to suggest must-try dishes at affordable restaurants.
Climate Change and The Appropriate Clothing:
Find information about the seasons and temperatures of the country/city you are going to and carry clothes to suit the weather. Winters can be extremely harsh, so you need to carry appropriate warm clothes and footwear. Although most places will have indoor heating, you should be suitably dressed when you are outside, to avoid any illnesses. Also, carry some traditional Indian clothes to wear in the festivals and other formal occasions.
 Taking Care of your Health:
A change in the environment, diet and weather may lead to ill health. Carry some basic medicines from home which can be taken for minor illnesses. Also, carry your doctor’s prescription for the same. If you have a serious medical problem, contact the Student Health Service at your college or university. The cost of health care in most foreign countries is extremely high. It is important for you to get health/ medical insurance. Most colleges and universities require students to have insurance for sickness and accidents before they start attending classes.
Studying in a new educational system and living in a different culture can be enriching and rewarding. It is also a tremendous opportunity to learn new things and have new experiences. Going with an open mind and being open to change will help in making the most of this experience.

In continuation with the series on soft skills and careers, in this episode Ms. Suchitra Surve talks on the most important and sought after skills today even in corporate and careers. One skill which should be easy to us as it is said Humans are social beings. Social skills should come very naturally to us but what we see today is social skills are the only skills that are most difficult skills for most of the teenagers and individuals. So, in this episode we will discuss and talk about social skills.
Is social skill an ability to talk to people, socialize, attend party have fun? It is everything. What we are talking about is the ability to talk to people, interact with people and connect with them. This is what social skills are; it is just not about having conversational skills or empathy. It’s a combination of both Somebody might ask why do I need social skills. We are social human beings, we live in a society, we are all inter connected for better relationships, better opportunities better peace of mind and happiness social skills are inevitable. How do you know whether you have or don’t have social skills?    • Do you feels feel the need to leave the conversation in a hurry?    • Do you have trouble maintaining eye contact when talking with others?    • Do you smile too less because of nervousness or sometimes too much?    • Do you slouch? Keep your head down?    • Do you speak softly or too fast?    • Do you cross my arms and legs?
If you have say yes for more than two of the above sentences then definitely you have certain issues regarding social skills. So, let’s understand why we shy away.  Obviously one of the biggest reasons is excessive anxiety about speaking and consciousness of self. Why does this happens? May be because we have fear of being judged and fear of ridicule or even making mistakes but the biggest is what will the people say about me? These are the issues that generally stop us from being social.
To a quick way to overcome this obstacle, first identify what are you avoiding once you have identified that rank the situation and the anxiety. Try to figure out what will be the worst that will happen. Next is predict, how long will you be anxious and what will happen next. Once that is done try to figure out your safety behaviours which means what are the kind of things you do or avoid and then try and eliminate them and the last will be practice. Remind yourself of the rational responses that you can give.
Once you have made the right contact. It is important that you also make the first impression. Maintain eye contact and maintain smile, keep a positive attitude and maintain your energy and be approachable. Once   you show this signs it is easier for the other person to come and talk to you. Once that happens breaking the ice and taking the conversation ahead is much easier. To increase the social skills it is important that you really socialize and take participation in any of the social events. One of the most important aspects of the social skill is thinking before speaking. So, think and speak, adapt yourself to the situation to make the conversation impactful and long lasting. Once you’re done this you would be more social people will be looking forward to meet you and interact with you. Thus ensuring you have the right kind of life, lifestyle people and further opportunities.

Hearing impairment can happen at any age group, it is not restricted to only to children. It can happen due to learning disorders or due to medical issues, paralyze, etc. We need to hear properly to speak also, so with audiology comes is speech.
We all talk and speak, but certain people have speech impairments due to any reason in any age group. We come across people with dysfunctional speech, stuttering, stammering and also a number of clinical issues. Here a specialist like an Audiologist and Speech therapist needs to be addressed. Audiology and speech therapist is not a new field at all but there is a dearth of professionals in this filed.
To be an audiologist and speech therapist one has to clear 10+2 in Science with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and/or Mathematics. One also has to clear the relevant entrance exam. It’s a four years degree course along with internships. Audiologist and speech therapist undergo a rigorous training program where equal importance is given to theory and practical application. Audiology and speech therapist is an important aspect of the paramedical field. It’s not restricted to a bachelor’s degree but one can do a Masters and Ph.D. in this.
The work area of an audiologist and speech therapist is not only confined to the hospital, it could be with an ENT specialist, special schools, also for kids or adults undergoing special traumas. They also work with the media and entertainment industry. We need people who can rectify the speech at every moment, the voice modulation, and diction has to be in place. Audiologist and speech therapist plays a big role to avoid and prevent the disorder or to evaluate a hearing aid or to know what kind of therapy to give the patients.
Individuals planning to get into this field need to be a science student who likes to make a difference in somebody’s life. It could be through any kind of method. Understand there are no surgeries done in this field, but one needs to work with people day in and day out, requires a lot of patience, a good hearing, and listening skills, you need to know your tone, diction, and pronunciation well to rectify somebody’s speech. One needs to have good observation skills, a scientific bent of mind and readiness to work for long hours. Understanding the core of the problem, evaluating and working makes lots of sense.
In fact, a lot of audiologists are required by the hearing aid implant industry too. It’s a different sector by itself. Speech and hearing can also give you a different career avenue. Audiology and speech therapy can be one of the fields wherein you make a difference in people’s lives and also have a different career for yourself.

Managing Stress While Studying Abroad
After going through a tedious application procedure, comes the prospect and also the stress of living in a new country. Everything is new and strange, the weather, the people, the food, the education system, followed by the pressure of maintaining good grades.
Managing stress when you are far away from your family, friends, and everything familiar becomes essential. Ms. Kunjal Sakhrani in this episode talks about certain tips to handle pressure and how to cope up with stress.
Plan and be organized: The best thing that you can do to keep stress at a manageable level is to be organized. Plan things in advance and set a timetable. You can make a list of activities that need to be done so that you are sure that you don’t miss out on anything that is important. It may seem very difficult at the beginning, but you will get used to it and will be able to manage everything effectively.
Find time for extracurricular activities: Universities campuses offer an enormous range of activities like sports, book clubs, debating societies, theatre groups, etc. Find an activity that interests you and participate in it. This will help you deal with loneliness, boredom, and depression.
Explore the local area: Wherever you are in the world, there will be lots of places to explore. Try combining sightseeing with a little bit of exercising by going on a hike or a bike ride. This will help in clearing your mind and will ensure that you work productively.
Make time to rest: While studying and indulging in an extracurricular activity are both important, remember that your body also needs rest. Invest in a comfortable pillow and a pair of earplugs to ensure you sleep properly. Your body will thank you.
Stay in touch, but not too much: Although it is important to make new friends it is also equally important to keep in touch with old ones and also your family. You can talk over the phone, text, chat over the internet or speak on a video call. Try and schedule a weekly chat or call, so that you have that to look forward to during the week.
While it is possible that many students are able to cope up with the pressure of studying abroad by following these tips, there may be many who still struggle. Even after trying out various techniques, you feel you cannot cope up, reach out to the International Students Office at your university. They will put you through to a professional counselor who will surely help you out.
