Quote
Religions are just made-up labels, and the differences between them exist only because enough people believe in the differences, and people build up institutions that reinforce the differences. Religious identity is like racial identity in that way; apart from the power of social constructions, none of it's real.
Michael Muhammad Knight in an interview with Richard Marcus

Can you be punk and still have religious values? Why not? Be what you want and tell those who point and laugh to shut up.

Conversation
From The Taqwacores
Yusef: Is punk an ideology?
Jehangir: Who knows anymore. Maybe it's just wearing a wallet-chain.
Yusef: To some people, I guess.
Jehangir: Some people would say punk is all about disseminating your own culture, shunning mass media conglomerates and never selling out; but the bands we look to as spiritual forbears were all on major labels. And some people would say punk is only about loud, aggressive music; but death metal's loud and aggressive. Is that punk? What about loud, aggressive rap? Or is punk supposed to be destroying social mores and manners and taboos? If so, where are the bands doing that today?
Yusef: So what do you think it is?
Jehangir: I think it's just about being ugly.

They took Knight's book as a manifesto for a new kind of Islamic youth culture that respects women and gay people and isn't afraid to challenge Islam where necessary.
