WoF Rambles - Animus Magic

A while ago I made a post on another blog detailing my headcanons for animus magic, and this is pretty much just a rehash of that with some more details.

Overview

What is animus magic and where does it come from? To understand what animus magic is we must first define a soul. A soul is a dragon's source of magic, and all dragons are inherently magical. This is what allows some to breathe fire, gain powers from the moon, control plants, etc. (though not all abilities are magic related; some are because of physiology/adaptations). However, sometimes a dragon's soul is damaged. When this happens, they are able to harness the magic within them to cast spells, thus resulting in an animus dragon.

Though commonly believed to be genetic, this isn't exactly true. It's more so that the corruption of an animus soul is likely to spread to offspring, meaning that an animus dragon is more likely to have animus children but it is not guaranteed. The animus "gene" can completely disappear, even if both parents are animus. Likewise, it can appear at random, even if there are no animus dragons in one's lineage.

Limitations It is no doubt that animus are quite powerful, but they can't do everything.

An animus is, of course, limited by their creativity and wit. However, they are also physically limited by their own magical strength. If an animus attempts to cast a spell that exceeds their capabilities, they will either destroy or severely injure themselves in the process.

They also cannot tamper with the soul in any way. They can't fix, create, or even destroy one, at least not with their magic. This is why animus are incapable of bringing dragons back to life.

Power Some animus are more powerful than others, though this is mostly just their capacity to harness magic from their souls.

The more an animus uses their magic, the more their soul breaks, and the easier it is to use it for more powerful spells. It's sort of like a crack in a dam. The bigger it gets, the more water comes out.

This is, of course, not without consequence. Bigger spells require a bigger price.

Consequences Tampering with a dragon's soul can have many consequences. An animus could start seeing a deterioration or even a complete loss in their natural, magical abilities. They may also start becoming weaker, such as through more brittle bones and the loss of fat and muscle.

In addition to physical decline, an animus can also start experiencing mental decline. They may become angrier, more erratic, paranoid, or even experience a complete personality change. It should be noted that this is more so the result of physical brain damage.

Some Notes

A dragon being evil is not in any way related to their soul. The soul is just a manifestation of a dragon's magic, not their morality or characteristics. Only animus can damage their souls, and that doesn't necessarily make them bad.

Turtle did not turn Anemone into an animus, that isn't possible

Albatross mostly committed the massacre because of his mistreatment. The use of animus magic certainly contributed to this, but the constant abuse is what really pushed him to his breaking point.

^ It should be noted that animus can remain stable even if they use their magic. Most incidents are a result of the circumstances, it was just easier for dragons to blame and demonize animus magic.
