"The Society was created to instill order. Men were made to sacrifice so that humanity endured. They were given Colors, lives limited and ordered so that we could destroy the timeless cycle of our race—prosperity to greed to war. Gold was meant to shepherd the other Colors, not devour them. Now we are trapped again in that cycle, the very thing we endeavored to avoid. So the Society? The beautiful sum of all human enterprise? It’s been dead and rotting for hundreds of years, and those who fight over it are but vultures and maggots." - Lorn au Arcos

Happy birthday to Spartan Samuel-034!
Today is his -486th birthday!
Tumblr media
Sam was born on Harvest and identified by Dr. Catherine Halsey as an ideal candidate for the SPARTAN-II program. Like the other candidates, he was kidnapped and brought to Reach for training and augmentation. Early in his training, he was paired up with John-117 and Kelly-087. They failed their first training exercise due to John running ahead of them and leaving them behind. They learned a lesson in teamwork and Sam asked to be friends, becoming the formative iteration of Blue Team. After augmentation, Sam emerged as the tallest and strongest of the SPARTAN-IIs.
On Eridanus Secundus, Blue Team grew, this time with the addition of Fred-104 and Linda-058. It was their first mission together and a success, but things would quickly change.
After the Covenant attack on Harvest--Sam's homeworld--the UNSC changed the priority of the SPARTAN program from Insurrectionists to the alien threat. The Spartans were debriefed and sent to retrieve their MJOLNIR armor on the Commonwealth immediately. However, the frigate was attacked by the Covenant, and Blue Team responded after donning their armor. Their plan was to plant Anvil missiles in the ship's engine room and detonate them, destroying the ship and its passengers.
There, they encountered their first Covenant combatants ever-- Kig-Yar soliders. A Kig-Yar fired a plasma bolt into Sam's armor as he attempted to protect John, breaching his vacuum suit. Realizing that Sam would not be able to retreat into space with the rupture in his suit, John ordered him to stay and defend the engine room. He remained, killing many Kig-Yar single-handedly before the ship exploded.
Sam's death devastated his team and the rest of the SPARTAN-IIs, marking the first death since augmentations. For Kelly, his death was a sobering reminder that the Spartans, while the best the UNSC had to offer, were not invincible. For John, it served as proof that the Covenant could be killed, although he blames himself for Sam's demise.
Years later, Blue Team still carries Sam's memory with them, and John would go on to use his name and number as the passwords to the Weapon's deletion routine, demonstrating that over three decades later, John's first friend is still fresh on his mind.

I always felt Red Rising and Halo Reach have very similar aesthetics, so I made Darrow in Halo Reach.

As I write more of my Red Rising fic and I can't tell if I'm writing heat or I'm regurgitating the same point over and over again.

Hello friends! I'm writing a Red Rising fic about a Gold falling in the Lion's Rain in Golden Son. Here's a little excerpt from it! Hope yall like it!
I turn to my left and right, thousands of Golds and Obsidians in starShells, Hivepods filled with Grey soldiers follow our descent in toe. Storks with even more Obsidians and Greys file behind. Hundreds of thousands. The chances of me dying are a hundred thousand to one. I can make it out.
Then I see as a damaged leachCraft spirals towards a hivePod too slow to maneuver out of the way. At minimum sixty-two people died right in front of me. The debris from both transports flares outward like budding flowers coming to life at the first sight of spring. The destruction claims fifteen more lives. Men and women are crushed, impaled, and split in half before the debris continues on its way towards the depths of space as if nothing happened. With every death, my chances of survival dwindle exponentially. Despair billows up in my stomach as I hurl once again. My display is now covered in what remained in my stomach. I feel hollow, empty. The smell alone makes me want to hurl again, but I have nothing left in me to let go. I can barely see out of the viewport. Which means nothing to the sounds that rack my comms unit. I cannot hear the war around me, but I can hear the screams. Screams of pain, screams of horror as their comms are cut abruptly. Some get one word out, a lost love, their mother or father, some golds even call to God. As if there is a God who will greet them in kind. We, the Peerless Scarred, the Golden Shepherds who are supposed to be the pinnacle of Society. Who are supposed to be Mortal Gods. It all doesn’t matter in the end. With one final word, we are nothing more than echoes in a cave with no end. I wonder what I will scream when I die? What final sounds will escape my body before some Green hacker cuts my comms.

The Lightweavers have it rough, don't they?
Imagine a trailer for a Stormlight project. Movie, tv show, anime (pleasepleaseplease), whichever. Black screen. Thunder rumbles. A booming voice pierces through.
"LET THE ANCIENT OATHS BE SPOKEN ONCE MORE."
You hear the voices of the various characters reciting their oaths one after the other, some solemn, some triumphant, others filled with a quiet determination.
"I am Justice!"
"I will free those who are in bondage."
"I will remember those who have been forgotten."
"I am Unity!"
"I will protect those who cannot protect themselves!"
"I killed my father!!!"

Am I the only person who thinks Roque betraying Darrow and going against him makes like no sense? Out of all the characters who could have joined Darrow, it isn't the philosophical, emotionally intelligent guy like Roque au Fabii? Like every time I think about Red Rising (which is a lot) I can't help but jump through every hoop to try and figure out why Pierce chose Roque of all characters to betray Darrow. Like everything Roque did, Cassius could have been in place for, and it would make more sense since Cassius and Darrow are only really friends in the first book. I get they have a mutual respect for each other and I love their friendship in Lightbringer but honestly Cassius could have stayed the villain and Roque could have joined the Rising. Idk I feel like I am missing something. Like am I the only one who thinks it was a character assassination for Roque's character? I could be missing something but I've reread the series a few times and I still feel this way.
