Ao3 subscriptions are so fucking wild to me. Every time I write my silly fanfictions and post them 124 people get an email just to let them know that this idiot is posting their fanfictions again. I send 124 people an email every time I write smut. Imagine sending 124 physical letters out just to be like “hello everyone, I put some guys we made up in our heads through the horrors again.” Absolutely absurd. I am kissing all of you on the lips.

I wish the people around me would've understood how much hormones can affect my ADHD symptoms. Some days, I just can't get any work done with how bad my brain fog gets and I feel like all I can do is ride it out (and try to be gentle with myself).

One of my favorite things is modern adaptations that leave people with the same careers they had in the original material, because unless you’re a cop or a doctor that practically never happens.
Irene Adler’s an opera singer. We still have those! They don’t have the same subtext exactly, but nothing is going to because we aren’t the Victorians. She could continue to be an opera singer. I have never seen this happen.
Jonathan Harker can still be in real estate. That’s a job people have. A modern story that still involves Dracula contacting his firm to help him purchase property sounds amazing actually.

Okay so bad news for everyone on YouTube right now
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting the 13th, we will have an AI determine if we are children or not and if you are a child, than you are forced to send your ID, send a selfie or a credit card
Tumblr media
This has the obvious cons of having your privacy being revoked from you and and in case there is a security breach, major identity thefts.
So what do we do in this scenario?
Well right now I have real idea as this is relativity new to me, but I do have two plans
Plan 1. Bug the shit out of them, send letters and send emails about how much of bad idea this is.
Include why the AI will mess up and target adults who watch cartoons, include privacy issues, censorship issues, anything you can think of that relates to this. I want you guys to bug the hell out of YouTube until they reverse this idea
Here their address for letters
Tumblr media
Send a mass amount of letters on the 5th of August and than another mass amount on the 8th
Plan 2. Blackout.
Since the thing is coming out on the 13th.
The plan will be to completely avoid YouTube at all cost for that day (and beyond), no watching, no sharing, no uploading, no nothing.
Download videos before things go down, watch Netflix. Whatever you do, don’t touch YouTube.
That’s all I can say right now, I also want you guys to let YouTubers know of this situation cause if it’s important for everyone on the website to talk about this immediately
Spread this stuff around, let people know of YouTube’s upcoming policy and how it’ll hurt everyone
Edit: I have taken into consideration and I am going to agree that the blackout should be until the decision is reversed, this is so we are not out at risk as users and so YouTube doesn’t just ignore the original black out
I might have a more detailed plan posted later today, but it depends on everything goes
Another edit: just to remind yall to send in letters and emails about this to google to force their hands to reverse this decision
There is also the law itself, though I can’t speak much on it other than finding lawing bodies that can force YouTube to reverse this decision. If anyone can find a place to file or call for this, that will be greatly appreciated! (I heard maybe the FTC and or the California Consumer privacy right can be considered, but that needs more research)
BIGGER UPDATE: we have a new plan in motion, here is the updated plan for you all to see
and also here's a petition to stop the law that would help support this into becoming a thing
and also a tumblr post about it and how you can help further prevent this from being allowed in office
Don’t forget to send this fellow people outside of tumblr
YouTubers, Twitter users, send it through out and make sure you are heard
Another update for people, we have a discord server! Come over to the server to join in and be organized then before!

Sometimes it is your fault.. Sometimes you don’t listen well enough, you’re selfish, you’re rude and you aren’t always right. Sometimes you fucked it up and tbh that’s okay. It happens, learn from it, apologize and keep it moving. Just because you fucked up doesn’t mean you’re a bad person. Don’t dwell on it

I remember some of the fandom-wide discussions on LJ about whether or not you should include warnings for (common) triggers. From what I remember, it was considered an optional courtesy on the part of the author to provide any kind of warnings, and some people were seriously miffed at the suggestion that giving warnings should be the norm instead of optional.
I'm guessing that's also why we have the four big archive warnings and the "None of the big four" and "I'm not telling you, read at your own risk" warnings as a compromise. The big four are the things people are commonly upset about (and also still pretty general), so fic writers EITHER have to tell you if any or none of them are in the story OR at least warn you that you might find any or all of them inside. That way any reader can make an informed decision and no author is forced to comply with a norm they don't agree with.
While properly warning and tagging has become the norm (at least in the parts of fandom I'm in), it hasn't actually become obligatory. The tagging and sorting capabilities (and shortcomings) of LJ and delicious and later AO3 has probably contributed to that. Now that we have AO3's tagging system, nobody wants to go back to the Before Times. But the system only works if people propetly tag their fic, so.
I'm not sure fandom babies understand how much info they generally get on fics on AO3. Especially the ones who complain about certain kinds of content. TIME WAS YOU COULD NEVER KNOW IF THERE WOULD BE SHIT YOU DIDN'T LIKE IN FICS.
Like, okay, take this header from a fic I loved in LotR fandom back in 2002, on the LotR forum/website I preferred:
Tumblr media
That provides... essentially no info on what's actually in the fic, y'know? It's 6 chapters and appears to mostly be about Frodo and Pippin, and it's rated G, but other than that, take a risk, right?
Or take this header on Livejournal for a fic I posted in 2008:
Tumblr media
This was actually an extremely in-depth fic header at the time. There were a lot of people who didn't bother adding notes, word counts, or even characters of focus. "Warnings" was an optional entry, and I only bothered adding it bc the fic had significant spoilers for an episode that had aired recently. There are other things I'd tag on it now, but those weren't "tagged" at the time by most people.
I'd show off an FF.net header but I can't actually get the site to load tonight.
Like, it was controversial that a fic challenge community I was in on LJ in '07 or so took down a fic someone submitted because they didn't warn for sexual assault. Because we had no rule about being required to warn.
And some of y'all bitch that AO3 allows thoroughly-tagged content that you can easily avoid and not accidentally read, and if you accidentally read it bc it's not tagged, you can REPORT it????
Nah. Fuck that and fuck you. AO3 should not censor content posted to it, but I have not seen a fic in YEARS that doesn't have more info about the content of a 100 word drabble than I would've ever given for a 4k word fic back in the day. Not because I specifically had bad habits, but because WE DID NOT PROVIDE THAT INFO AT THAT TIME.
Sorry just. I saw something earlier today being critical of AO3 and just. Y'all don't understand how good you have it. You really really don't. And on the one hand I'm glad that you always had this quality of tagging, but on the other fuck you for acting like it's not fabulously thorough for asking if there's common triggers in it.

People like to read/watch more stuff that is simillar to things they liked. Otherwise people wouldn't have genre preferences. And yes, fanfic readers get very specific with their preferences, but it's not that different from only reading romance novels set at a specific time and place or specific kinds of murder mysteries or scifi that deals with this one topic.
I wouldn't start reading all of Agatha Christie's detective novels and expect them to never follow the same general plot-formular. Reading all Miss Marple stories isn't that different from reading multiple fics of your OTP/BrOTP based on the same premise.
fanfic writing culture isn’t “oh dang! I wanted to write about this prompt with this character but someone else already wrote it, so now I can’t”.
fanfic writing culture is always “two cakes is better than one. the more the merrier. there can ever be enough fics of this character with this prompt!”

I love talking with neurotypical people about my executive dysfunction because I'm like "yeah there's this invisible wall in my head that I'm incapable of getting past no matter what I do and it stops me from doing things" and they're like what the actual fuck
Meanwhile other neurodivergents are like
