it's okay, ulysses ogre. you can back up and try dubliners, it's a short story collection with much more straightforward prose, you can dive deep on one piece at a time, and once you've toyed around with that then I'm sure you'll have an easier time with ulysses. besides, I had an irish lit professor who'd been studying finnegans wake for twenty years and she said she still didn't really know what was going on in it. ulysses ogre, what really matters is if you are enjoying your time with literature and feel like you are gaining something, not whether you reach the "correct" conclusions. there's no need to try and force yourself through something if you feel like you aren't on an even enough plane with the text to reap any of its rewards.

You gotta engage with all these things to understand just what builds a fascist brain, because you do build a fascist brain. You build it through reading and watching and engaging with the world around you. Then after that, you empathise with that. You gotta be, infuriatingly, empathetic with someone who likely wants you dead. You gotta ask yourself what thoughts you share in common with a fascist, understand why you have those thoughts so that you can start to build a better anti-fascist mind.

I think a lot of people confuse empathy with sympathy and so they might see a post like this and assume that I'm asking them to be nice to fascists. I'm not. This isn't high school. You don't have to have a sit down with a Matt Walsh type and hash it out, you don't have to read The Turner Diaries or Mein Kampf or listen to Burzum or whatever. You just gotta understand what made them and how to not become them.

So the first thing I'm noticing is the subtitles. They don't match what's being said, but in really weird ways. I think they're either machine generated (they wish they were AI, unlike the humble henchbot) or they've been translated to another language and back again.

It's really weird. It's like watching the english dub of an anime with the english subtitles. They don't quite match up.
