Final Fantasy: Type-0 HD…

Is a charming addition to the FF Suite as it combines light strategy with action-rpg mechanics. Having multiple characters to play as, each corresponding to a certain weapon and/or class, makes the 12+2 characters stand out from one and another every single one will find itself on the field. Unfortunately, that’s a half truth as the ranged characters have a significant advantage over their melee counterparts. The story also chooses to be told through numerous scenarios and in-game historical events making the plot feel grand and epic. And yet, both the way the story is presented and the way it is told leave a LOT to be desired. Paired with extremely linear dungeon design and an under-utilised time management system FF:Type-0 comes across as more of a journal of unique ideas than a complete videogame. Still, I’ve had a lot of fun playing and seeing the story through to the end and I am glad that I’ve added this rough gem to my gaming collection!

Im really torn between the fact that my favorite set of all time Will be seeing the light of the day again ( lorwyn) and my gut feelings of how It Will be fucked up by the new superbland mediocre art style and the real world politic agenda ( not so) subtly pushed in late sets, in a CARD GAME. We want to see stories of faeries, kithkins, elves, goblins, Giants,merfolk and cinders in their beautiful fantasy setting, no trans they/them faeries that think they're kithkins

Two points:

1) When returning to a world, we’re very cognizant of the aesthetic of the world. We understand returning to Lorwyn requires embracing what made people love it the first time around. Obviously, there will be updates, as the game has evolved much since our first visit, but we’re very aware of the need to recapture the plane’s essence.

2) For far too long, fantasy, as a genre, was used as a way to reflect the worldview of those in power. It leaned into stereotype and reflected how the privileged wished the world was. Modern fantasy is more reflective of the actual world, which includes the wide variety of life experiences that exists.

Trans people, people of color, and women playing a larger role, are all part of modern fantasy because they’re all part of the actual world, and it’s important that our stories and world building be reflective of that.

“I want to return to a time where we could ignore the existence of certain elements because I was happy living in that ignorance” is not an excuse to deny real people and their real life experiences.

Entertainment is at its best when it lifts everyone up and isn’t used as yet another means to ignore certain people’s reality.

Since 2024 is over and we are slowly settling into 2025 I wanted to make a post about the videogames I played last year and how they impacted me. So, here they are in no particular order!

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Skyrim is my all-time favourite game that I have been playing for a decade and just getting lost in its world every time is magical.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? With an expanded free trial which you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award-winning Heavensward, and thrilling Stormblood expansions up to level 70 for free with no restrictions on playtime.

Dredge

A wonderful little indie gem that serves as a love letter to both the maternal medium and to Lovecraftian horror.

Eiyuden Chronicles: Rising

A charming spiritual successor to the Suikoden series that is not afraid to differentiate and walk its own path.

Final Fantasy IV

FFIV is where most of the FF elements we’ve known and love over the years are finally coming together making it one of the most important entries.

Helldivers 2

Am incredibly hard and soulful 3rd person shooter that successfully dug its heels in the current over-competitive live service world.

Dragons Dogma II

Capcom’s decision to stay the (game design) path of DD1 and double-down on the game’s strengths and philosophies and finding success is inspiring to say the least.

Ghostwire: Tokyo

GW:T manages to build a hauntingly beautiful Tokyo city and marries it to an outside-the-box combat system.

Gran Turismo 7

GT7 managed to reignite my love for the world of motorsports by acting as a massive love letter to both the world of automobiles and the world of racing.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 (2.0) acts as a bridge between Immersive Simulators and Role-Playing games by serving an incredibly written story with amazingly open-ended gameplay.

The Game Awards was a treat this year. I always approach the show open minded every year because I want to see the diverse ensemble of videogames it has, I don’t need every game announcement to be part of larger and established IP, all games have a chance to excite.

The Awards’ presentation this year was top notch with allowing Devs to speak with more freedom and with more time.

While the death of E3 is felt every year with the TGA trying to balance new announcements and awards this year they have managed to walk the tiny string with relative ease. Also Astro Bot is peak videogames.

All games are art.

Skyrim is my all-time favourite videogame and I always make it a point to complete at least one full walkthrough every year.
