Good Morning from #Germany, where financial redistribution between states (Lander) has hit a new record. In 2024, the federal financial equalization scheme totaled nearly €18.7bn, €300mln more than the previous year and exceeding the previous record set in 2022. Only 4 states are net contributors, w/Bavaria paying the most (€9.8bn), while Berlin receives the largest amount (~€4bn). The system highlights that redistribution doesn’t always close economic gaps—it can actually reinforce or even widen them.

Good Morning from Davos. Day 3 of #WEF25 brings a touch of Europe w/German EconMin@roberthabeck and #ECB President@Lagarde taking the stage. Perhaps even more intriguing is the appearance of #Syria's Foreign Minister. The big question is how the new administration will position

Good Morning from Germany, where the number of shareholders has fallen despite strong stock market performance. In 2024, the number of shareholders and equity fund investors dropped by 180,000 to 12.1 million, marking the second consecutive decline. Only 17.2% of Germans aged 14 and older hold shares directly or through funds. This lack of risk appetite is a key reason why Germany's capital market remains underdeveloped, contributing to the country's economic stagnation.
