Celebrating 160 Years of Ullswater Steamers

Tuesday 16th July marked the 160th year since Ullswater Steamers began sailing on Ullswater and I was chuffed to be invited along on a Gin Cruise to celebrate. We had the most glorious evening weather for sailing and the fact there was a steady supply of gin didn’t hurt either!

Brantwood & the Ruskin Museum

In a slight diversion from the norm here on Holme & Away, I’m discussing two wonderful Cumbrian locations in one: Brantwood and the Ruskin Museum. Both can be found in (or near) Coniston and both have connections with one of Cumbria’s well-known names, John Ruskin. Brantwood was Ruskin’s home for the 28 years leading up to his death in 1900, and the Ruskin Museum, well… it’s obvious.

I had heard many positive whispers about Blackwell for a while prior to visiting. Before this point, I didn’t know much about the Arts & Craft Movement either outside of the name ‘William Morris’, but Blackwell flipped that on its head.
