Korean, Swedish, Reading, and DIY 600 hours is what it takes to get decent at a language, and perhaps anything else, but that time also has to be well spent. This is my journey of trying to spend more time on what I enjoy, while also finding a balance so that that time counts. Squander not, my friend. Hopefully my squanderings can help us all squander less.

December 12th - December 19th
TTMIK lesson (2nd?)
True Beauty bi-lingual read 1 chapter + Quizlet grouped by theme (kinda want to go back to my KR-KR idea, and can have a separate quizlet set that defines the definitions (with 한자) and these would just be tested for recognition instead of recall KR-Eng)
use 5-10 new words and a TTMIK grammar lesson to write a story (adventure, quest) entry and set a mini-goal for next time - or just example sentences
(consider also writing a simple book summary in target lang/include something to do with book im reading journal)
watch a kdrama for 10 min with KR subs and try to spot words I just learned
// Have a weekly review of vocab and a weekly review of grammar (summarize using all vocab learned from the past 5 entries). incorporate: personal goals, to future self, interests, culture. summarize comic plot
Keep track of my score: +1 point for each correctly used word or phrase or grammar point (relevant to the day) +2 points for using a word in multiple contexts (e.g., using a word both as a noun and a verb).
Reward myself: 1 episode after a journal entry or review day
I think I would've liked a study guide and some proof it works/a system for checking language acquisition through media: something like language golf. the lower the score, the better. the lower the amount of unknown words or grammar parts the better. The goal is to get through a comic chapter or 2 minutes of a kdrama without exceeding 3 new or unknown words or grammar. make sure this is just a competition against the self.
I can also time my journal entries. can track the time:word ratio.
can release only what I've tried and tested after 1 week.
[translate and solve 1 crossword clue (app) or consider a word of the day from the korean dictionary where i translate the defintion instead of the word (would be cool to make a linked wiki like this)]

Korean English Translation
Tumblr media
I'm reading this book. Today I read about:
Common problems of non-equivalence: (pg. 29) and Translation Techniques (pg. 33)
I'm looking forward to doing some of her translation exercises, or doing some of my own from Webtoon. The book Everlasting Empire by Yi In-hwa also sounds interesting.

We're not dating! - Episode 3
우리 안 사귀어!! - 3화 in English.
Translations below.
***
*step step*
If you ask me what kind of relationship I have with Sae-yan...
Hand!
Let's go.
*woof*
...(it's like having a) puppy?
***
I WILL make you embarrassed!! (??) (1)
Um, I think our IQ is also probably the same? (2)
But if you really care that much about how it looks... (3)
There's also a way to really date. (4)
*cr-ackk* (thunder)
Ehh??
***
Oh~ What's with the reaction? Can't I even get upset?
*jook* *grab*
Ahoo Ahoooh ahoohoh~ ahoo ohohh~ I'm already upset you see~ I'm against violence~
But since we were little we've even seen the stuff of each other we're not supposed to see! What do you mean we're dating now, I can't do it because I'm embarrassed! (5)
But, aren't you ashamed to go to school holding hands every day...?
Don't be keep cowardly pushing the facts!! (my note: honestly the interaction in the panel is just confusing me. I don't fully understand what's going on. I don't THINK my translations are that off tho...)
*hit hit hit*
Idiot! Idiot! Why are you always okay and I'm the only one who's embarrassed?!
***
Why do you think. That's...
*tilt*
Already, from that day a long time ago, it was you who I -
*sigh*
Ah, anyways! It's okay just holding your hand! Just your hand!
*smirk*
Okay. Alright.
***
It's getting late. C'mon let's go.
*swallow*
Okay!
*tap*
It's just holding hands--
***
We...are not dating!!
***
Translation Notes:
야 말겠어
ㄹ걸 - to state or refute in an unsure way
~ㄴ/는다면. When used like this, there is a little bit more of an emphasis of the fact that the action is a supposition/assumption than when ~(으)면 is used. Therefore, the translation of “if” is more commonly used with ~ㄴ/는다면.
ㄴ 다는 - 사랑한다는 말 해 Say that you love me! (about love/the first part …) / 사랑하는 말 해 Say the words that you love! (describing "word"/what comes next; adjective) [사귄다는 방법 있어 vs. 사귀는 방법: There is method that is dating + method of dating(??)] Other translation option: There's also a way that we can really date.
ㄴ 다니 - create a meaning that implies the speaker’s surprise, displeasure, or astonishment to what was said immediately before.
ending a sentence with 고 - still means "and," "and (then)," just indicates that you are not yet finished speaking; softens speech.

We're not dating! - Episode 2
우리 안 사귀어!! - 2화 in English.
Translations below.
***
At the end of last year, I had a big accident on my way to school.
Even after I left the hospital, I stayed home for a long time…
You have all kinds of hobbies and enjoy them, yet at the same time
It became harder and harder to cross the my room's threshold.
But curiously -
***
I feel okay when I hold Chan-min's hand. I'm not scared of going to school.
But the problem is...
Sae-yan, you need to hurry up and get ready. Your boyfriend will come soon~
Ah, mom! He's not my boyfriend!
Everyone asks if we're dating!
He's already been holding my hand on the way to school throughout a whole month, so ugh of course they do!
***
Besides, even when it was time to go home, he confidently came to the class and found me...
*chatter chatter*
Come on, let's go, Sae-yan.
Woo Chanmin doesn't have any shyness? I'm the only one who's shy and self-conscious, so it's like...
*shake shake*
It feels like I just have a crush and him he doesn't like me back!!
***
I can't do this because I'm so upset... Oh! Aha! I have a good idea!
Conversely, I can make Chanmin embarrassed, too! (Because, I can do it too, see?!)
Come on, let's go back together...
Huh?
*swoosh*
***
Yeah, let's go!
*grab* *noisy noisy*
What do you think? You're also embarrassed if I do this, right?
...whether it's on purpose or stupid. (I guess more rumors will spread.)
***
That night
I'm a fool! It's just me who's become more embarrassed!
*hit hit*

Takeaways:
phonology - get a different "mouth feel" for each language up front, imo, practice sounds/pronunciation and also some echo and record practice.
different places - physically study the two different languages in different places (hmm not my desk, i want that to remain neutral, mayyybe the car for one language of podcasts, but...hmm library Korean? cafe Swedish? idk maybe not the library bc i don't want to worry about talking, but they do have study rooms, ill think about my places...)
when thinking/studying one language, don't bother thinking up the same word in the other language you are studying (suppression). It's fine if you know it in both languages off the bat, but if not, this is just an opportunity to practice keeping the languages separate.

Sacred Economics -
This story shows (in a little way) how we have moved away from the ancient gift economies to the money system.
How the money system has encouraged competition and scarcity, destroyed community and necessitated endless growth.
The author describes how the money system will have to change and says we have an opportunity to transition to a more sustainable way of living.

Sacred economics is about outlining an economy in which we can all prosper. It presents a series of policy options and changes that we could implement in order to live in an economy that prioritizes people's quality of life and the care of the environment. Step-by-step he examines major issues with modern industrial economies which have become common, and presents what is wrong with them and how to change things so that the damage that they cause is avoided.
There is a story from a different book that the author recalls:
People used to trade chickens for hams and had a habit of helping each other out. But then one man came to town and introduced them to money in the form of leather rounds. To each family he gave 10 leather rounds. It was an easier bartering tool. But he asked to be returned 11 leather rounds from each family the following year. The 11th round was never made. The 11th round had to come from the families. So when the storms came, they stopped helping each other out.
this story illustrates how we have moved away from the ancient gift economies and how the money system has fostered...
"traces the history of money from ancient gift economies to modern capitalism, revealing how the money system has fostered competition and scarcity, destroyed community and necessitated endless growth....[The author ultimately says that we have an ] opportunity to transition to a more sustainable way of living. This book is about how the money system will have to change." - book summary

pg. 95 An Economic Parable
from a different book called "The Future of Money"
People used to trade chickens for hams and had a habit of helping each other out. But then one man came to town and introduced them to money in the form of leather rounds. To each family he gave 10 leather rounds. It was an easier bartering tool. But he asked to be returned 11 leather rounds from each family the following year. The 11th round was never made.
