I think I have found a song that perfectly fits Crowley and Aziraphale after the ending of season 2. It’s called à la Claire Fontaine and is about the singer listening to a nightingale singing while missing for their longtime friend to love them again.

I am currently obsessed with Good Omens (I know, total shocker) and it just hit me that this song my mom often sang to me when I was little fit surprisingly well.

Anyways, long story short I put the lyrics below the cut and I translated them in English (I tried to match the rhyming scheme and stuff but I’m not perfect)

i love this song but i honestly wish it meant something else haha not a fan of these types of love songs. the title is so interesting too. i actually initially translated it as "invisible" because 透明人間 (toumei ningen) means "invisible person," but transparent is more literal and true to the definition, so i went with it. besides, the persona talks about changing color, so that implies they can't be completely invisible

i'mma keep it real with you chief: atarashii gakko! songs are usually difficult to translate because they use so many terms that are either slang of the japanese Gen Zs or just words that can't be found in my go-to dictionary. i actually had to ask native speakers what they thought of the meaning for some lines, particularly the 友達思い one. i initially thought that でいい meant "it's fine" but it's actually a usage of the で that connects nouns and adjectives and also indicates reason. that was confusing af

another thing i took note of was the use of 気になる (ki ni naru), which can either mean 'to bother' or 'to be interested (in).' i went with the latter because this IS a love song and the persona is talking about the guy's face (and yes, unfortunately, they are singing to a guy, as made known by 彼) so it made more sense. special shoutout to the line "少し不安もあるけど欲しがることに怖がらないで," because that shit's so real it hurts. even if it is just talking about something as simple as a confession

I have a question surrounding fan translations and stuff.

Is it morally/ethically acceptable to use machine translation tools such as Google Translate to ASSIST in fan translation?

The translation and localization is still done by hand and assisted with dictionary and language tools (e.g. Jisho.org), but machine translation is used as an aid to give like a very basic outline of what the sentence may look like/be about. Especially if a sentence's structure is more complex/not beginner-friendly or if the sentence contains a lot of words that the translator isn't yet familiar with.

Especially for someone who isn't fully fluent in the original language and benefits from assistance/reference of some kind.

I ask because I use Google Translate in this way for fan translation and I feel like I'm a "fraud" or "cheating" or something for not doing it 100% manually. I'd like to make public fan translations in the future but I'm not sure if using machine assistance is frowned upon or not.

I'm watching OFMD with my mum and the Finnish subtitles on HBO nordic are ABYSMAL.

I was most offended when the subtitle translated Jim's they/them as ACTUAL PLURAL: "they (multiple people) just started to speak." "he alkoivat vasta puhua."

AND THIS IS FINNISH LANGUAGE WHERE THE ONLY PRONOUN WE HAVE IS ALREADY GENDER NEUTRAL. YOU HAVE ONE "HÄN" AND YOU FAILED THAT

but on top of that, there are translations that are just... wildly misheard??? "he treated us like dogs. worse than dogs" is translated to "he treated us like dogs. westerners."

WESTERNERS???!!! LÄNSIMAALAISIA?????

you can kiiiinda hear it "worse than dogs" as "westerners" if you squint your ears. But like. The english subtitles have each words correctly. couldn't they have checked from there?

is is machine translation? is the translator paid so little they have no time to check anything?? who did this??!! are they not fluent in english???

It's just bad. Poorly done. I don't remember ever seeing this bad translators on an official version of a show. I don't know how they managed it.

the AnWL guide by dengeki arrived in the mail today and i’m losing my mind so have some Just Rock rough translation stuff

this guide is more thorough and like. official? with cute comics and even an interview with wada… (i translated the rock one asap but gustafa and marlin have ones too! and a bunch of cute pony!!! yayyyy!)

i wanna sit down and translate and format more sections in full when i have time, but for now i’ll just share a few rock snippets then get back to Drawring because i will explode if i don’t!
