YOU’RE walking in the street just a few metres away from your news station, wearing your favourite Ralph Lauren midi dress in blue black, face all dolled up, hair done. Usually, with around two hours left to be on air, you’d be nervous as heck—not even able to think straight about what to fill your stomach up for dinner. But this time, your mind is empty, echoing with the sound of your heels clicking against the pavement, the thought of dinner lingering around weakly.
i gtg. gym.
“Y/N!” the voice of Jihyeon shatters the thought you were deep into, about a hundred and ten steps away from the news station. You look up, shocked to see Jihyeon jogging up to you, her boyfriend tagging along close to her.
“Hi, didn’t think I’d run into you,” she says, slightly out of breath, but she smoothly loops her arm with yours.
You reply, blinking twice, “I didn’t think I’d run into you either.”
She gives you a once-over. She grins, “Y/N… you look like you’re about to crash the Met Gala instead of hosting the eight-o’clock news!”
“And you look like you don’t care about the ankle pain you get every time you wear heels,” you counter, glancing at the heels your best friend is wearing.
Jihyeon grumbles. From the look on her face, you could tell that she was embarrassingly going through the endless moments she complained to you about heels, as well as the countless times she chose to wear them either way.
“I’m rushing, okay?” she sighs, heavy.
Taesan slips to her side speedily. “For bungeoppang.”
Jihyeon looks like she’s been stabbed in the back five times. “Babe! We went out to buy some food too…”
“Okay, fine,” he shrugs. Jihyeon sticks her tongue out at him, and he leans in to tickle her, causing them both to erupt in laughter.
You smile slightly, chuckling to yourself. A weird feeling tugs at your heart—seeing your best friend all giggly and teasing her boyfriend reminds you of someone you wish you hadn’t thought of at that moment.
Sungho.
Park goddamn Sungho.
He’s just a friend, you remember reminding yourself so many times, back in university. But why are you reminded of him—his warm smile, the way his laugh echoes through the air when he’s teasing you, and the way…
Your eyes dart between the pavement and Taesan, his eyes crinkling as he laughs at something Jihyeon is doing.
Sungho always did that too. He would smile at you, snorting through his nose whenever you made a joke that was funnier in your head. He would look at you when you’re speaking, no matter if he understood it or not.
Sungho was always there.
But why are you only noticing him now?
“Y/N!”
You snap out of it, the tornado of thought dissipating into thin air. Jihyeon’s staring at you, her eyes narrowed.
“You okay?” she asks, voice gentler, “you spaced out.”
“Yeah,” you breathe, blinking once. Twice. “What was your question again?”
“I…” Jihyeon glances at Taesan, “I asked where you wanted to eat dinner. You go on air soon, right?” “Yeah. Yeah. Let’s go to the dumpling place, just a few shops away from here. Let’s get something light—I’m not too hungry, and we’re having dinner at your place later tonight too.”
Pause.
“Are you really okay, Y/N?” Jihyeon asks again, her grip on your arm a little tighter.
“Yeah,” you nod, trying your best to flash a smile at her.
You don’t even know why it felt hard to.
“Just… just tired.”
Taesan squints at you playfully. “Or are you thinking about someone?”
You don’t answer—but the way Jihyeon suddenly goes quiet tells you she already knows.
Suddenly, your phone dings. A text notification.
You quickly unravel your arm from Jihyeon’s, bringing your phone out of your purse. Your eyes ignore the text notification from your manager, your fingers immediately pressing your pinned chat—Sungho.
No reply.
He didn’t even open your message, your ‘hello sunghooo, see you tonight at hyeonie’s place’ left hanging.
You swallow. His silence feels heavier than you anticipated—hell, no, you didn’t even expect him to be this way.
What went wrong?
You both didn’t drift apart even after graduating, just like the rest of the friend group. You still texted Sungho almost daily, liked each other’s posts, and commented occasionally too. You still meet him during the weekly dinners, laughing and talking with him like no time has passed. To you, it still feels like university days. To you, Sungho is still an important person in your life, someone who you would drop everything for.
Only one thing slowly became different for you—your heart is slowly opening its doors for him, in the way it refused to do back then.
So why does it feel like Sungho’s suddenly walking away?
hello noona! I saw your teaser
you look so cool >:)
Your breath catches.
Donghyun.
Jihyeon, who’s peeking, gasps. She sees it too. “Y/N…”
“He’s texting you?”
You groan, pinching the bridge of your nose. “Try to say it like I’m on the front page of Dispatch?”
Jihyeon scoffs, amused.
“Wait, wait,” Taesan butts in, eyes gleaming. “This is the same Donghyun who was, like, pretending not to smile telling me about the lunch you two had together yesterday?”
You hiss. “Shut up!”
Taesan snorts, nudging Jihyeon.
“Honestly, if you ask me, he’s cute,” Jihyeon says thoughtfully. She shifts her weight between her feet, crossing her arms in a casual manner. “If Sungho keeps ghosting, I’m about to start advocating for you to go for him instead.”
“Sungho isn’t ghosting me.”
Wait.
What?
Jihyeon’s mouth hangs slightly open.
“I’m sorry,” you mutter, sighing.
What the hell.
“I’m going to go get some dumplings,” you quickly say, wrapping things up by patting your best friend’s arm. You nod at Taesan. “See you tonight!”
You speedily walk away before the couple could say anything else, your heels clicking loudly against the pavement. But your heart is louder, ringing in your ears.
Your heart is stuttering.
You don’t understand any of this. You want answers. But you know, kind of, that it might be impossible to get them, after all these years putting Sungho in the friend zone.
At the same time, you want Sungho to look at you the way he used to.
You want to know why he’s the one who made you feel something again—only to leave you hanging in the quiet.
LATER that night, you finished your shift at around 9:30PM. You caught a cab to Jihyeon’s place, the box of fried dumplings you bought earlier on your lap.
She opens the door for you a minute after you ring the bell. Laughter fills in the cold night, spilling in from the hallway, familiar voices echoing through the house.
“Woonhak and Dongmin’s here, by the way,” Jihyeon says, her hair tied up into a low bun, her clothes dusted with flour. She smiles, “I made some cake!”
“Sounds great,” you reply, your heartbeat loud against your chest. You put up a smile, hopefully strong enough to show your excitement against these abrupt jitters.
You follow her into the house, suddenly nervous.
Then you hear it.
His laugh. Distinct despite Jaehyun hollering, possibly rolling on the floor at something Minju said.
The one you used to love hearing because it always meant you said something funny.
You freeze.
Sungho’s heading towards the kitchen before you can move. “Y/N—”
He stops short too.
And you finally meet his eyes.
You suddenly can’t tell what he’s feeling.
Not cold. Not warm. Just... unreadable.
Your chest tightens alongside your grip on the box of fried dumplings you’re holding.
He raises his hand in a small wave. A tiny, lopsided smile blooms on his face. “Hey.”
You blink. “...hey. Sungho.”
Jihyeon and Taesan exchange glances behind him. And the room feels a little too quiet for a reunion between so-called best friends.
Ding!
SUNGHO’S in the kitchen, opening a bottle of apple juice that he offered to do in place of Jihyeon. Pausing, he pulls out his phone from his pocket.
A text from Jihyeon.
Sungho exhales, looking up. He glances at the living room—and there you are. Sitting between Jihyeon and Minju, breathlessly giggling about a story back during university days.
The days where Sungho realised his feelings for you.
“So, do you like Donghyun?” Jaehyun’s question makes Sungho freeze. His hand pause mid opening another bottle of apple juice.
You bite the edges of your lips. “No? I don’t know… he’s nice. But, yeah–”
“Still holding on?” Taesan quips, sipping his drink. “No worries, Y/N, I’m sure Donghyun’s just being nice.”
Jihyeon sits straight. “You mean…?”
Her boyfriend shrugs. “Yeah. No offence, Y/N, but I’ve been Donghyun’s best friend for quite some time. I do think he’s just being friendly. Nothing more.”
Sungho feels relieved hearing that. He really does.
But he doesn’t get why he feels so betrayed seeing the smile on your face drop—no one notices, as you quickly put it back on, but he does.

Hello, I'm Asmaa from north Gaza.
https://chuffed.org/project/129260-urgent-please-help-asma-and-shahd-to-survive-this-genocide
I come from a lifeless neighborhood with no color other than the color of blood and destruction.
I was born in 1991.
I'm a girl from a family of seven boys and six girls, and I'm the youngest.
My mother and I live in a house left to us by my father. I studied at university and graduated with a degree in basic education.

I worked in a private job.
I received a salary that covered my and my mother's expenses as much as possible.
We were happy until the war came.
The war on Gaza began on October 7, 2023.
Here, hell began for us in Gaza. I lost my job and became unemployed. My mother owns nothing, and I own nothing.
My mother was displaced to the southern Gaza Strip for 15 months. I didn't go with her. It was months of longing for my mother and siblings.
My brothers Mahmoud and Ashraf stayed behind.
We were displaced several times because I live in the Shuja'iyya neighborhood, a border area close to the army.
During the displacement on June 27, 2024, we left the house and raced along the road to escape the shells and planes. Then came the lightning strike. The shock was that death was faster than my brothers could escape...

Here, here, we lost our loved ones. I lost my brothers, the apple of my eye, Mahmoud and Ashraf. Mahmoud left no children. As for Ashraf, he left behind his sons who grieve, and my mother is in pain because they departed to God without a farewell, without a kiss on their foreheads, a farewell kiss. After a while, we returned home. The house had been severely damaged by demolition and stones that had fallen from their places, which used to shelter us and protect us. Now, nothing protects us except some worn-out tarpaulins that do not protect us from the heat of summer or the cold of winter. Our suffering is great, but with your help, we may reach a better and dignified life. I appeal to you to help me support myself, my mother, my loved ones, and my family. What you provide makes a difference in our lives as individuals.

We live in a world that has forgotten the meaning of humanity and giving. May God bless you all.

YOU glance at the text exchange you and Sungho had this morning one last time before walking into the grocery store.
The way he simply left your last text with a like.
It’s unlike him.
The Sungho you know would laugh at you saying his cooking is the best, denying that it’s not as good as you say and that you’re making things up just to get free food.
But now, he’s… not?
I get it, you say to yourself as you grab the basket, he’s busy with work.
But he’s never been busy for you.
It’s a little selfish, you know that, but you’ve always noticed that Sungho treated you a little differently than he did with the rest of your friends. He’d always have a little bit more time for you than for Jihyeon and Minju combined. He’d always text you back, and sometimes even text first. He’d always take pictures of things he sees that you like or remind him of you.
At the back of your mind, you know that it’s probably because he wants to keep the friendship between the two of you up and running despite the confession he gave during junior year.
Or maybe he doesn’t like me anymore?
But what proof do you have that confirms to you that Sungho still likes you, despite years passing since the day you pushed him back into the friend zone? Moreover, now that it’s been so long, there’s a higher chance that he’s like this—so attentive, caring, and somehow attractive—because he’s your best friend. He knows you.
You take a deep breath, the heavy feeling in your chest difficult to erase.
Is it filled with guilt, for not reciprocating early enough? Is it longing? Or is it regret, for only reaching for Sungho’s heart long after he closed its doors?
“Y/N?” a voice, familiar but you can’t quite recognise, pushes you out of your thought bubble. “Noona, is that you?”
You sharply turn around, and there he is—Donghyun.
“D-Donghyun?” you blurt, hand flying to your mouth. Your eyes scan him up and down. It is him—exactly how you remembered the basketball guy you had a crush on back in university days. The only thing different was that, now, his hair is a sweet brown shade that reminds you of milk chocolate instead of the bleached blonde.
He looked dashing before, but now, he looks more soft and… definitely more handsome.
You blink. “Oh, or should I call you Leehan?” you smile sheepishly, remembering the alias he went by on social media.
Donghyun shrugs. “Donghyun sounds nicer coming from you. Oh, and can I call you ‘noona’? I know we weren’t close, at all, but it’s… cuter,” he pauses, chuckling bashfully to himself, “if I call you that.”
You find yourself smiling.
Cuter? He’s ridiculous.
“Of course.”
You don’t even remember what you’re talking about, but as you chat with him more and more, you realise one thing: how smooth Donghyun is with his words. It wasn’t really flirting or sweet talking in a sense—it was more towards just him spitting facts or saying things in a gentle but honest way that made you enjoy being around him. He’s respectful and keeps his distance, doesn’t talk to you in a flirty manner. Instead, he’s holding his own basket of groceries, his eyes often folding into his cheeks whenever he reacts to your words.
“By the way, when I think about it, you look like you just had a breakup,” Donghyun points out, after strolling with you to the dairy section. You pause in your tracks, turning slightly to eye the younger man in front of you. How could he drop that observation with such a calm expression?
And most importantly—what? You’re sure you didn’t look that pathetic.
You snort, shaking your head. You grab a carton of milk from the fridge, the hum of the cooling machine somehow in rhythm with the thumping of your heart. “No—please, I wish I’d be lucky enough to even have time to date someone.”
“Is being a news anchor that time consuming?” Donghyun asks, tilting his head slightly.
You were about to ask him how he knew you were a news anchor but quickly swallowed that question. It was stupid.
You look directly at him, suddenly finding that the way he’s standing straight with a bucket of random groceries in his hands, just a few metres away from you, is somehow adorable. The cold of the glass door against your fingers seeps into your skin, but you barely register it.
“Well, Donghyun, if you think about it,” you reply, adjusting the basket’s weight in your arms. You glance inside, your hands checking through the items as they rustle against each other in your basket. You pause, fingers lingering on the box of brisket that you wanted to buy for Sungho.
Sungho’s favourite—meat.
You blink.
You’re still thinking of Sungho.
“Noona?”
You snap back to the moment, swallowing thickly as Donghyun stands exactly where he was, waiting for you to complete your answer. “Yeah? Oh, um, I was about to say… w-well, if you think a-about it, all jobs are time consuming. Aren’t they?”
You hope he didn’t notice you stutter.
Donghyun nods. His voice is low and calm. “Hmm. Makes sense.”
He pauses, and before you could shuffle away, he slides closer. “Anyway, noona, want to get lunch with me?”
You blink once. Two, three times.
“What?”
Donghyun smiles, the corner of his folding into creases. The sight makes you feel fluttery, the sensation making you feel like you’re floating—something you’ve definitely felt before.
But when?
“It’s on me, of course, if you let me pick the place.”

ᅠ note ᅠ from ᅠ 𝐋𝐈𝐋𝐈 ! ᅠ hi so, as always, ignore the dates bc i am TOO LAZYYYY to change them up aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa i dont even know if this chapter makes sense. btw do not ask me if i am even sure you can hide people on x (twitter). because i am not sure. heeheeee anyways. heh. what do you think of this smau so far? do we like how sungho is progressing with his “plan” >:) ?

From Starvation to Displacement💔🍉🇵🇸
Khan Younis: A City of Displacement and Hunger🇵🇸🍉
Khan Younis… a city overwhelmed by displacement, suffocating under the weight of tents and silent screams.Families fleeing from one danger into another, with nothing but broken dreams and borrowed blankets.
Children are starving. Mothers spend the day searching for crumbs. Fathers are shadows of themselves, carrying pain they can’t express. No clean water. No food. No medicine.
This is not a page from history — this is now. In Khan Younis. In the dust and mud, among torn tents and empty pots.
Hunger is the only language left. The cries are loud, even if the world has stopped listening.
Please, don’t turn away. Every share, every donation can help.

what the hell.
first of all, i am so sorry that you had to go through all of this, op :( sending love and support, no writer should ever go through this! and thank you for speaking up!
second of all, what the actual hell. this is so disappointing. as someone who looked up to jiah, for her consistent posting schedules and what seemed like daily effort that she put out for her fics... i am beyond disappointed. upset might not even be adequate to describe how i feel about this.
however, i want to be clear: admiration does not excuse theft or dishonesty.
but more importantly, as a fellow fan fiction writer, i am offended. i’m sure my fellow writers feel the same way too.
having to deal with writer’s block, squeezing in time in our busy lives to do what we enjoy despite the ups and downs of motivation, as well as lack of proper recognition.
not to mention, as a creator with a small page, it's already hard enough to stay inspired when you’re pouring your heart into something that you know will just flop and go unnoticed. yes, i can’t post often because life has a way of keeping me busy, and blr is just a silly hobby𑁋a way for me to pour all of my ideas into words. but does that mean i will copy someone else’s work just to stay relevant and gain engagement? no.
i struggle a lot with this especially of late, and to see someone i look up to disregarding another writer’s hard work? no. hell no.
me after rereading this hell of a rant: skip this part below if you want because it’s a bit personal! (i’m including it not to center my own feelings—just to show how deeply this has affected people around her, both as a writer and a friend, at least for me.)
it stings even more because, in the past, you’ve confronted me about my ghosting habits—i took that seriously. i worked hard to be present, to show you that i valued our friendship. So this—seeing the lack of respect and care—it hits deeper than you probably realise. and honestly, all the admiration i had for you—it's gone. i don’t even know where our friendship (atp i’m lowkey doubting if you saw me the same way i did) stands after this, and that hurts even more.
i’m not sorry, jiah. please reflect on yourself, own up to this. remember that it takes more than just an insincere, hollow apology to fix this mess. you need to reflect, take responsibility and understand the real damage this had—not just to your reputation, but to the issue of plagiarism that you claimed to care about.
hello, members of kpop/enhypen community! my name is tori and I am the owner of the jjk-centered blog @kenntoria. please read this if you care about content theft and plagiarism!!
after thinking long and hard about this(not that long, okay) i have decided that bringing attention to this situation was the right thing to do. now, let me start by saying that i mention in my pinned post that my works are not to be plagiarized, but I guess it wasn’t clear enough which brings us all here:
not even a week ago, on july 23, i received an ask from anon asking if i own a certain blog since there is a fic very similar to mine and anon also linked the post. same anon then sent another ask with another link to a different post of the same writer. the blog is named @okwonyo !
i’ll link the fics here(had to unblock the author to do that): “confession” and “dreamer”.
and the works that they were “inspired by” are: “flirting” and “shaving nanami”.
now, the posts were uploaded on july 21 and jul 10, notably later than my works, and if it weren’t for anon i wouldn’t even have known about anything, because i don’t lurk around the enhypen tag. if you want to, you can read works and connect the dots, but i am gonna present the similarities and explain why i, and many others, think it’s blatant plagiarism rather than inspiration(red is marking her work and blue is marking mine), you can read the whole thing too if you’d like ofc, i highlighted everything that would guide to see the problem, but please read everything.

this is from “dreamer” and “shaving nanami” fics. you can see that there is similar pacing, and some of the sentences are structured the same way, using the same words, minimal changes applied. and yeah, you can say that the writer added the “dreaming about marrying you” thing to her work but it doesn’t change the fact that this whole thing was basically ripped off. then, let’s get to the “confession” fic that has like a sequence of sentences taken from my fic, despite the plot being a little different in her fic, but the whole “not noticing the flirting thing” was taken from me. i wouldn’t really call that inspiration if you just take the sentences and literally put them in your fic. would you? :)

(mind you, this is my first time dealing with things like this, which is not an excuse, bur rather an explanation as to why i handled this situation poorly at first.)
now, with these out of the way, let’s discuss what i talked about with the owner of the @/okwonyo, or “jiah”. i sent an ask since i didn’t follow her and couldn’t message her, and we had a civil conversation about these works. i’m sorry i don’t have screenshots but it’s because the chat is no longer available to me(she blocked me from her sideblog which she used for chat with me @okwonyos).
she did apologise and offered to link the fics(or even take them down!) but i, admittedly, was a bit distracted with in real life issues and dismissed by saying that she could just tag me, which of course was my fault. when i said that i thought she would say “inspired by bla bla bla” but she just literally tagged me in the end of posts(mind you, there were 4 posts and she tagged me only in these 2 hah) and when i noticed and decided to ask her to take the posts down like she offered in the beginning because it would just be easier and would make me comfortable enough. she insisted that she likes those works a lot and me, being the pushover i am, relented and thought “well alright at least her readers will stay happy” and allowed her to link my stuff in her post, although she again mentioned me only at the end when i asked her to do it in the beginning of the post. i didn’t really care that her notes were in the end, not really.
come to find our, there were another 2 fics, that i didn’t know about until she mentioned me.
oblivious and promises, which are “inspired” again by my fics: oblivious reader and beauty marks.
was she gonna mention these if i hadn’t texted her again a while later about her poor credit giving style? i don’t think so, buddy. anyways, i read the fics briefly and was baffled by the similarities i saw. granted, i will mention that the “oblivious” fic by her resembles an “inspiration” a lot more than other fics since there are added elements like the characters being childhood friends and confession scene and all that — but still, there is whole beginning of the fic that she basically reworded from mine(was it necessary to even use the message with emoji thing…):

for the “promises” fic… bruh, the pacing, the whole dialogue, the similarities, literally whatever happens between the reader and that male character are taken from my fic and reworded and posted as original before i dm’ed the author. which pisses me off, because if she had mentioned me from the beginning and if i considered it plagiarism it just would have been a lot more telling about this author’s intentions — they wouldn’t have been able to act nonchalantly, you know what i mean?
now, eventually, i sent the author some texts about how just taking paragraphs and changing them a little doesn’t look much like an inspiration and asked to take the posts down(if i remember correctly) and she went defence mode and me? i was too tired with my irl issues to attempt anything more after a string of messages pointing out that she didn’t “copy and paste” and she added her own details and plots to the fic. so i went with something like okay whatever i hope you learn from your mistake and bye and she happily replied “feel free to block me” which irked me.
it irked me to the point that after blocking her i didn’t feel relief or like a “winner” but more like i played right into her hand, which should have been the signs that this was not the right way to end things.
now, jiah, did you think it was over? i did think i’d just be mulling over this for a while and hoping other people don’t steal my stuff, but see it’s not me who noticed it, i was unaware — it was other people, several people, who noticed you just taking writing as your own and ignoring being “inspired” by me until you were reminded that yes, you did it wrong. and you have to understand what you did was wrong and accept it.
and you had to be the one to address it to your readers because me, i did address it and i asked my readers and followers to not even say anything to you and not go into your inbox — but something tells me you would have just ignored them and turned off anon asks.
you may ask: tori, why are you posting this almost a week later? well, i’m not gonna lie i have been thinking about this whole situation a lot and how i didn’t do it right and didn’t feel satisfied. and thanks to my beautiful readers and anons who felt injustice and confirmed my thoughts i have been finally pushed to act on this.
look, i have nothing to gain from this… i don’t need like the undying love of enhypen fans or to turn anyone against her, but jiah, gotta respect me, no? do i really need your credits after you posted your post like 10 days ago and was going to act like nothing happened until confronted? i really don’t lol, i just want to have peace and i want every anon and every person who sent me an ask about it and showed me immense support to be relieved that kpop community knows what’s going on.
and i’m bringing awareness to this because i am sure that plagiarism here is really common and i have been lucky to be struck by it only for the first time.
now, do what you will with all of this info.
thank you for reading this and have a good rest of your day!!

DON'T DEBATE IT, JUST LITIGATE IT! — MASTERLIST
Welcome to BND Law, a prestigious, high-powered law firm nestled in the heart of New York City. Known for taking on impossible cases, defending high-profile clients, and producing some of the country’s most sought-after legal minds, BND is a law firm that is built on reputation.
But behind the polished, shiny elevators and mahogany desks, the associates and interns are tangled in secrets, past flings, fake relationships, and forbidden flirtations. Everyone is hiding something—a buried feeling, a whispered confession, or a risky move that could end everything.
The firm runs on 80-hour workweeks, complicated contracts, late-night ramen runs, and the low hum of fluorescent lighting. From courtroom victories to conference room breakdowns, it’s not just cases that get argued here—it’s feelings, too.
Departments blur. Conflicts cross cases. The elevator’s too slow, the interns are always spilling coffee, and the paralegals gossip like it’s their job. But despite the chaos, every case changes someone—whether it’s their career, their heart, or the way they look at someone across the courtroom.

YOU take a deep breath before knocking on the door of your apartment three times. The cozy sound of muffled laughter can be heard from the other side, and you instantly smile—you’d recognise that string of laughs anywhere. A melody composed of Sungho, Jihyeon, Minju, and Jaehyun’s laughter all together. Harmonious, a gentle hug to the tired soul.
They’re already here, at your apartment, waiting for you to start the weekly dinner. It’s a tradition started by your dear friend, Jihyeon, who was adamant in doing so to keep your friendships tight and everlasting. At first, it felt quite burdening to balance in your new hectic schedule, but after a while, it felt necessary. Important. It helped you reset after a busy week.
You now understand why your friend made that a rule for everyone, to take turns hosting dinner—doesn’t matter how late or what type of food to bring—every Friday night.
“Y/N!” Jihyeon answers the door, her eyes lighting up at the sight of you. She pulls you into a hug—the scent of red apple and peony engulfing you. You miss her, your best friend who lended you her notes even when she knew it’d get wet from your tears. Your best friend who was here to lend you her ear, give you her shoulder to lean on, and push you to success anytime you needed it.
Tonight, she once again held you together by offering to set up your place when you were still at work. “I haven’t seen you in a long time!”
You nod. “Literally…” you say, stepping in. You close the door behind you. “Is everyone here? I hope the apartment wasn’t too messy…”
Jihyeon smirks. “I helped hide it all, don’t worry.”
You laugh, and she does too—and the sensation hits you like a warm hug on a rainy afternoon. You miss this; the entire friend group being together. You’ve gotten too busy with work and life, and forgot how much they meant to you. But now, they’re here, and for the first time in two years, you’re grateful to have dinner at 10PM.
“Y/N! C’mon, let’s eat! I’m hungry…” Jaehyun calls, already eyeing the loaded potato bowls on the counter. “Y/N, you bought these right? Looks good.”
Minju, who’s standing next to him, frowns. “Can you be patient for once? Y/N just got home!”
Jaehyun merely pouts, and that makes Minju blink in surprise.
You exchange glances with Jihyeon, knowing what exactly the exchange means. Jaehyun’s old crush on Minju is coming back to the surface.
“This entire friend group is quite literally held together by lingering feelings, huh?”
You turn sharply towards the source of the voice whispering in your ear, more focused on who the voice came from instead of the shocking statement he just made.
Sungho.
You haven’t seen him in a while.
He’s taller now, maybe just a little bit—or maybe it’s just you. He’s still got that same soft smile that made your heart do a backflip against your will.
“Well,” you say, swallowing hard, “I wouldn’t say ‘entire friend group’, because Jihyeon here doesn’t count.”
You give him a smile, albeit feeling rather awkward, and he smiles back. Just as you expected.
You feel glad, for some reason.
“Oh, if you’re wondering where Taesan is, he went out to buy some lemon tea,” Sungho adds, tucking his hands into his pocket, his eyes intently watching the bowl of japchae that Minju brought.
“Let me guess,” you say, grinning slightly, “Jihyeon said that it goes well with her lemon cupcakes.”
Sungho nods, a similar grin on his face. “Yeah. You know him by now—what Hyeon says, goes.”
“Happy wife, happy life,” you mutter, laughing at the thought of your best friend.
Your words are then followed by silence; the first real conversation you’ve had, face to face, with Sungho in a while sinking into you. You glance at him.
It feels a little weird.
It’s not like you haven’t seen him in years. You literally saw him about two months ago—the first time the two of you hung out in a really long time. The first time you’re going live for the evening news.
You still remember seeing him that day; his hair damp with sweat. He came to your news studio, still in his work clothes, panting slightly.
“Did you run here?” you asked, your hair slapping against your back when you came to a sudden stop. You, too, had run straight from the makeup room once you saw Sungho’s text.
He was downstairs, at the front of your news station.
You thought he’d already be home. His work finished at 6.
Sungho nodded. “Of course.”
You frowned. You checked the watch on your wrist. “Park Sungho. It’s 6:45. How are you going to get home before the rush?”
“I’ll just… eat dinner around here,” Sungho shrugged, the answer coming out like he’s answering a math question from first grade and the answer was obvious to him.
His eyes darted around for a bit before they met yours. “You? Aren’t you supposed to eat right now?”
You paused.
“How did you know?”
Sungho blinked several times before answering your question, looking like you just asked him the most stupid question in the entire world. “You didn’t exactly tell me, but I figured. Googled, you know, what’s the usual schedule for evening news anchors like you.”
Sungho’s voice was calm and serious, like it’s totally normal for him to be doing something like this.
Your heart did a somersault, and you clenched your fist to prevent the feeling from crawling up your face.
“Well…” you cleared your throat, suddenly conscious of the layers of makeup on your face.
“Next time just text me your schedule,” Sungho said, making you forget whatever you made up in your head to say. He adjusts the placement of his light brown blazer, tugging at its flaps.
Your eyebrows furrowed. “What for?”
Sungho chuckled. “So I know when to come and see you.”
You felt your breath stuck in your throat.
“Right.” You awkwardly chuckled in reply, shifting your weight from one leg to another. You glanced back at the news station you’re working at. “You know, I… I should get back. Fix my lip combo.”
“You’re already pretty without it,” when you moved to turn away, you caught Sungho saying under his breath. Your head turned sharply towards him, eyes slightly bulging like you can’t believe what you accidentally heard. Sungho smiled slightly as he met your eyes, nodding once. Like he didn’t just multiply the speed of your heart beating. “You can do this, Y/N.”
As if on cue, you smiled at him.
It came naturally, not like the smiles you practiced in the mirror all this while.
Honestly, you didn’t know what you were doing—your heart was thumping against your chest so hard you thought it didn’t belong there and wanted to jump out. This was your first time going live on the evening section, as a rookie too. All eyes were on you, all the time in the station, and you knew everyone was expecting nothing but absolute perfection. Your head was spinning and your heart was racing, but somehow, hearing those words from Sungho made it all stop.
“Break a leg—but not literally,” he added, laughing at his own words. “That’d be too painful.”
“Of course,” you grinned. “I’m Y/N, you know!”
Sungho nods. “Yeah.”
A beat.
You then sighed, turning.
You paused.
You sneaked a glance back at him. He was already looking at you.
You swallowed. “You always do that, you know.”
Sungho’s head tilted slightly. “Do what?”
“Know exactly what to say. When to show up. How to do it all.”
A smile pulled at the edge of his lips. Sungho exhaled, “then you know I’ll keep doing it.”
“Is work that demanding?” that same voice—Sungho’s—pulls you back into the present. Your eyes widen, and you quickly look around.
“What are you talking about?”
Sungho shrugs, slipping a spoonful of japchae onto the plate Jihyeon had passed him earlier on. “You’re deep in thought when we’re all gathered here,” he pauses, and Jaehyun’s laughter echoes through. You hear Minju and Jihyeon giggling their words along. “That’s why I asked.”
You sigh. “I’m probably just tired.”
Sungho eyes you, in the way he always does when he’s suspicious of your answer, but is done pushing. His gaze lingers just a little bit longer than you’d like—nothing significant, but it’s enough to make your cheeks warm up.
He passes you a plate that he filled up. “Eat up then. You must be hungry.”
“I ate before the broadcast,” you say, grabbing a pair of chopsticks. You sniff the plate of food in front of you, and immediately regret your words.
Sungho snorts. He elbows you. “See, I knew you’d be hungry.”
You huff, taking a mouthful of japchae. “Not my fault speaking live on TV makes me hungry.”
Sungho doesn’t say anything in reply, and you swallow the food in your mouth with a heavy feeling in your chest?
What’s going on?
The room grows loud again, filled with Jihyeon’s laughter over Minju and Jaehyun bickering over the last of the steak tacos you bought. You take another bite of Jihyeon’s lemon cupcakes, the sweet delicate texture melting on your tongue. Usually, you’d gush over any food that’s been handed to you, but this time, you don’t feel any excitement. Your mind isn’t on the food at all.
You’re already pretty without it.
The memory flickers in your mind suddenly—Sungho’s whisper hidden under his breath. Quick. Firm. Like he really meant it.
You almost choke on your cupcake.
“Careful,” Sungho says instantly. He hands you a glass of juice—his—voice gentle. Not teasing.
You glance at him, hands retrieving the glass from his hand. He’s not smiling. Just… watching you.
“Thanks,” you say softly, a smile forming halfway.
Before you can say anything further, Sungho nods. He presses his lips together, eyes intent on you for a second. It looks like he’s about to say something, so you brace yourself and wait. But nothing comes. He returns to his food wordlessly, and somehow, it feels like a heavy rock to the head.
THE dinner wraps up around half past 1 in the morning, after Minju insists (about five times, too) that they go home now that Jihyeon looks like she’s about to pass out from exhaustion in the middle of the living room.
The mood is mellow, soft. A little sad, but comforting.
You pick up a few dishes and bring them to the sink after seeing Minju and Jaehyun off.
“Y/N,” Jihyeon whispers, her shoulder brushing against yours as she stands next to you by the sink. Sungho is in the living room, cleaning up whatever he can. “Are you okay?”
Your eyes widen slightly, and your hand freezes midaction. You didn’t expect such a simple question from your best friend would catch you off guard like this.
You nod thickly. “Yeah,” you say, breathy, “I’m okay. Why?”
Jihyeon’s eyes narrow at you. “You’re just like Sungho!” she scolds, her voice still in a whisper that only the two of you could hear. “Always saying the same thing when you’re caught off guard.”
You don’t know what to say to that.
“I asked,” she continues, her tone gentler now, “because I noticed. Just now, I saw… it’s like you guys are strangers.”
You could feel your heart stopping for a split second. You hastily rinse the plate you were washing. “What do you mean?”
“I don’t know,” Jihyeon shrugs. “It’s still the same—you and Sungho from university and now—but I can see that it’s grown… awkward? From your end especially.”
“I…”
“It’s never really felt awkward before, because you didn’t have feelings for him,” Jihyeon adds, and the way she accurately reads your mind makes you frown.
“But now, you like him,” her voice goes lower, “right?”
Your heart begins to accelerate. But you can’t bring yourself to say anything. Jihyeon’s gaze pierces through your skull, and from the sigh that she lets out, you know that she knows the answer even without you vocalising it.
“Hey,” Sungho calls, and the two of you immediately turn towards him.
He’s holding the lid to your favourite Tupperware—the one you always lose. “I was tidying up the living room for you,” he explains, “found this.”
You begin to laugh sheepishly.
“You always misplace your favourite things,” he sighs, shaking his head. He shuffles next to you as soon as Jihyeon slips away, tucking the lid to your dish rack. “Remember to put things away,” he reminds softly.
You bit your lip. A heavy feeling settles on your chest.
“Sungho,” you say, and he freezes.
“What?” His voice is slow, bracing.
“You always know, don’t you?”
Sungho doesn’t react. Instead, he slowly brings his eyes to meet yours.
“You always know what to say. When to show up. How to do it all,” you exhale shakily. “You always know things about me that I myself tend to forget.”
This time, he doesn’t smile.
What?
Your heart drops.
Instead, he grabs his coat, says goodbye to Jihyeon before heading to the door.
His hands already on the doorknob, he turns slightly to say, “I’m still that person, for you,” he says quietly. “But I’d do it for Jihyeon too. Minju. Jaehyun.”
“What?” a gasp slips from the gaps of your slightly open mouth.
You blink. Once. Twice.
Why does it feel like you’re being gently shoved out of something you never even got to walk into?
“I’m not the one you’re waiting for anymore, Y/N.”
Then he turns and walks out the door, the silence following the thump of the door closing deafening.
You’re left standing there, breath heavy. You exchange looks with Jihyeon, who looks bewildered and ready to riot.
“Y/N,” Jihyeon says softly.
You turn to her, but she doesn’t ask anything else.
She just pulls you into a hug and lets the silence speak for you.

Hello friends, I am Abdullah Salem Abdullah Jaafar, 26 years old, a graduate of the University College with a degree in Information Technology - Multimedia. I used to have a beautiful family; I’m married and have four children, and my wife is pregnant.
I previously worked at a multimedia company, but because of the war, I lost my job, my home, my car, and now I have no place to live or work.
During the war, we were forced to evacuate more than four times. Each time, we had to leave everything behind without taking any of our personal belongings.
I live in northern Gaza.
We were displaced to southern Gaza, then to Deir al-Balah, then to Rafah, and now we live in an uninhabitable tent that is not suitable for living.
My daughter Rahaf was martyred in the war due to Israeli airstrikes. Now I have Iman, Malak, Basel, and my wife is in her seventh month of pregnancy.
Please, I am in desperate need of your help just to provide food and water for my children.
I lost my home and we have become homeless."
