i had a thought of "do people not know what AUs are anymore?" and then i remembered nobody explains fandom stuff to new people anymore so it is entirely plausible people genuinely don't know what AUs are and nobody has explained it to them, so for today's lucky 10,000:

"AU" stands for "Alternate Universe" or "Alternative Universe" (same difference) and is basically any thought scenario for a fandom that isn't canon and can't fit within the canon universe. If it takes place in the canon universe but something is notably different, that is typically what's known as a "Canon divergent AU," because it diverges from canon.

an AU can be absolutely anything. There's a couple of widespread pan-fandom au scenarios that often get thrown around, like coffee shop aus, genderbend aus, hanahaki aus (hanahaki is a whole thing in itself i'd recommend researching on your own), etc. One you might hear sometimes is "crossover AU" which is when you have characters from one fandom interacting with characters from another.

You can have as many aus as you want. They can be whatever you want and you can do whatever you want in them. It's a sandbox for you to play around in and explore how things would be different or how the characters would act in those circumstances or environments. Maybe they have different relationships with each other. Maybe they behave slightly differently. Or you can just say "Okay, [x] is true. How did they get here? How would things have to be different for this to occur?" which can also be fun.

If you are ever confused about why people ship something that seems completely out of the blue or doesn't make sense to you in the canon setting, there's a good chance they like it in an AU setting! Not everything everybody is interacting with is necessarily the canon! Not everybody wants things to exist in canon and just want to explore playing dolls in a different sandbox and that's okay. And their sandbox might look a lot different than yours, and that's also okay. You have the freedom to make your sandbox whatever you please. Do whatever you want forever. Get funky with it. AUs are fun.

The ao3 curse caught me before I could start writing. I ended up in the hospital with pancreatitis. I'm now at home recouping, so we'll see what I can get done, but it probably won't be as much as I thought I would.

"Deprecated Fandoms" Spam Bot Alert!

If the comment is on your own work: 

Note: The "Spam" button only appears when viewing a guest comment directly on your work. This is because the AO3 comment inbox is merely a copy of the work's comments – deleting a comment from your AO3 inbox does not delete the comment from the work itself.

Go directly to the comment on your work, either by clicking on the link in your email or in your AO3 inbox.

Click on the "Spam" button to mark the guest comment as spam and remove it from your work. 

That's it! You don't have to do anything else.

If you see comments like these on someone else's work: 

Feel free to let the creator know the comment is from a bot and that they should mark it as spam. 

You can also report the comments as botspam via the Policy Questions & Abuse Reports form linked at the bottom of every page on AO3. 

If you are reporting multiple guest comments, please submit only one report and include all comment links in your report description. (You can get the direct link to any comment by clicking the "Thread" button on the comment, and then copying the URL of that page.)

AO3's Policy & Abuse committee (PAC) does not pre-screen content on AO3; they only investigate if they receive a report. All reports are reviewed by PAC volunteers, who are real human beings. You don't need to worry that your or anyone else's fanworks will be taken down due to a baseless report or a mass-reporting campaign. 

If PAC were to determine that you had violated the TOS, you would receive a notification of the violation via the email address associated with your AO3 account—not via comments, social media, or any other method.

School is out for summer! I'm going to be busy this week, but next week, I should be entirely free and may post the first chapter of my DPS long fic. I also got a one-shot request about a month ago that I just saw, and I will be writing that and hopefully posting next week. A few other ideas I'm working on may also get posted. I'm going to try and put together some sort of posting schedule. Each thing will likely get updated once a month because I want a steady schedule to allow for my job this summer and also when school starts again in the fall.

As a total aside:

I've said it before and will say it again: my health and academics come before fic, always. Fic is a hobby, not a thing I have to do. I am not obligated to post anything, regardless of what you might think. You don't pay me, and because of that, I don't owe you diddly squat. Sorry, late stage capitalism is a prison. Believe me, if I could spend all day with my friends writing about my poor little meow meows I would, but I can't. College is also an expensive commitment I've signed my soul away to.

I've gotten some rude comments in the past on fics (mostly over on ff dot net) because I haven't updated or posted something in what they consider to be a timely matter, so I feel the need to apologize now, even though I don't owe anyone an apology for my non-existent posting schedule.

I get how frustrating this can be, and I'm sorry. But please remember there is a human behind this account, behind these fics. And I have a life. I have family, friends, and school. I have health issues I'm coping with.

I got sick and had a chronic pain flare because of it this past week. That on top of the holiday crazy means absolutely nothing I wanted to get done is done. But! Hey folks! I'm on winter break right now, and here's what I hope to get done before returning to school.

- Outline for my Dead Poets Society fic completed

- Potentially, the first chapter of the DPS fic published (though this may not happen until spring or summer, as there's a lot of later plot points I *need* to iron out with a friend who's far more knowledgeable than I am). Sorry this one is taking so long to get off the ground, I want it to be as accurate as possible, and as clean as I and my amazing friends/guinea pigs/beta readers/editors can get it!

- Outline of my Minerva Raises Harry fic completed

- Potentially, the first few chapters of MRH re-released (may not happen over break)

- A coldflash one-shot published (maybe two)

Hey folks, because I apparently enjoy torture and can't get an answer online, I have a question about immigration, and I was hoping someone who knows a ton about immigration, especially immigration to the US in the 1940s, could help me. Basically, if there was a family of Scottish immigrants, two parents and a kid of about two or three years of age, how would the parents go about getting the child citizenship? I for the most part understand the bit for the adults, though clarification would be appreciated, but I can't find much information on toddlers becoming citizens. Thanks!
