When Ed hits the legal drinking age, the whole Amestris gang (sans Al who's not old enough) goes to a nice bar. Mustang buys him his first ever shot and pretends he'd done so to be Nice (he is NEFARIOUSLY peer pressuring Ed into having straight vodka as his first drink because he thinks Ed's gonna spit all over the table). Fuery sees what his boss is doing and kindly warns Ed it goes down easier if he drinks as fast as possible.
They all watch in horror as he throws it back like water. Havoc screams "HE'S DONE THIS BEFORE" (he hasn't)

THIS IS SO REAL
He tried to stab the fuhrer in a room full of high ranking military officials, said fuhrer then ruffled his hair, laughed in his face and HIRED HIM ON THE SPOT
Thinking about Edward Elric as the Amestrian Military's specialest little unfireable boy
State alchemists can be fired for underperforming. We know this up front from the likes of Shou Tucker. And this makes a ton of sense from the homunculi's standpoint since the state alchemists are sacrifice candidates, and the homunculi would want to cull the weakest candidates and focus only on cultivating the strongest ones who stand the best chance of opening the portal.
........Then there's Edward. Who's already opened the portal.
There's no need to cultivate him. No gamble taken on whether he's good enough to open the portal. He passed the final test already. Graduated 4 semesters early.
And as such, has a free pass to do Absolute Fuck All.
And I'm imagining how funny this is from like an outside perspective.
Some newish state alchemist who'd only ever read up on the stories of Edward Elric, ready and excited to start their career of being paid handsomely with endless freedom to research and travel and do anything they want in the pursuit of science... surprised and confused to find themselves put on probation their first month for things like "ignoring orders." Which is, as best they had thought, a famous Edward Elric pastime.
Roy showing a slight bit of stress about his yearly state alchemist report, and Ed just snorting and rolling his eyes at Roy because every year HE just hastily does his on the train ride over (canon in the manga, a travesty it was left out of the anime) and it gets rubber stamped. Ed not realizing that other alchemists' reports get genuinely scrutinized and torn apart while Ed is free to turn in whatever absolute bullshit he thinks of 36 hours ahead of time. One year his report was about whether alchemy could be done via dance (conclusion: no it can't) and no one cared. Roy WANTS to tell Ed there's some kind of unknown favoritism around Ed making him literally bullet-proof but Roy has no way to phrase this that doesn't sound like he's just in denial and mad at how good Ed's train-reports are.
Guy from the Internal Amestrian Affairs sector who's responsible for auditing other internal military personel for any suspicious activity hitting about 1 million red flags for Edward Elric, issuing a STRONG and URGENT recommendation to suspend the alchemist pending further investigation into things like "literal bunk-buddies with two members of the Xingese royalty (enemy nation)" and "spent $10,000,000 of his stipend on a librarian to make her re-copy (what he seemed to interpret as?) military records in some extremely transparent effort to unearth state secrets (it was a recipe book but he was literally asking her about state secrets)" and "literally has never once obeyed an order, ever, not even once in his career, and is on public record having said 'I do not care about the goals and protections of the Amestrian Military. I am in fact only pursuing my own interests several of which are diametrically opposed to the safety and well-being of the governing body of Amestris'"
The issued recommendation is intercepted before it even reaches its intended desk. President Bradley himself has taken issue with it and denies it before a single set of eyes has seen it. The President's veto stamp is a terrifying hammer, used rarely, and it is now sitting on the auditor's desk.
The auditor sleeps with one eye open from then on out.

I sorta gotta agree, I've always seen Roy as more of an asshole older brother with a huge age gap. Like he was already a preppy middle school jock by the time Ed and Al were born, but they're all still siblings.
He definitely cares about them and they can go to him if they need anything but he doesn't really feel the need to take care of them. He's only protective of them when someone is actively threatening them. (think scar) Some of the things you mentioned he does, like lying about Hughes, sending Ed into the desert, or when he hits him, those all read as more things a brother would pull than a father.
They bicker and banter and Roy does have superiority but Ed doesn't care and never listens to him.
And Ed can drag Roy down to his level so easily, he gets called out for getting into screaming matches with the 12 year old kid all the time. That's something only a younger sibling could do. Roy's a mature adult, until his 12 year old brother shows up.
Another thing about Ed is that he really doesn't act like the oldest sibling. I love the trope of Ed being the elder who had to take over the house and take care of Al when their mom died but it's just not something we get to see. *
Honestly, Ed is more of a middle child. Hes constantly seeking attention, he's rebellious and fairly aggressive, he's independent, and apparently middle children are known to be adaptable and quick thinkers, which we know describes him.
As for what you said about Riza not being very maternal. I think she tries to be, as you see when she tries to be a guiding figure (telling Ed about Ishval), or take care of the boys (giving Ed a gun**) or when she's soft with them. (Pretty much whenever she sees them) But she doesn't really have great examples of parents, so she doesn't really seem like she knows what she's doing. I think the general consensus is that her mother died when she was young, and her father is distant at best and downright abusive at worst, so it's understandable that shes not the most maternal person, even if she recognized the need for that role in the Eric's life and wanted to fill it.
*We see Al caring for Ed since he isn't in a position to really be taken care of himself. At times like after Martel's death when he cleaned the inside of Al's armour, or when he repairs it, or even when he binds the armour itself we see Ed caring for Al, and it's obvious he wants to, but there's just not a lot he can do to take care of a suit of armour. Instead Ed runs himself ragged trying to fix Al's body and leaves Al to take care of him since he won't do it himself.
**she grew up in the countryside so I bet her dad's best attempt at taking care of her and providing for her was to give her a rifle and teach her to shoot.

Gotta love how this scene is never addressed.
I'm back with another rant.
So I know that Mustang was just acting during this scene, to make it look more convincing, and he totally didn't see Ed coming, and Ed was a bit hasty /impulsive when he grabbed Mustang like that, and I know he made it up.....
By... having Ed "kidnapped" and forced into the dessert, zero context given... with metal bolted into his body that could hypothetically get hot enough to literally sear and burn his skin but whatever, it's an anime!
Ed's automail just chooses to obey reality apparently...
Mustang never really ever apologized for hitting Ed like that, like I know some people are out here saying how parental roy is... But both series he acts like a major douche who sometimes gives a fuck.
Like you lie about Hughes' death, see Ed watch a person burn to death, then hit him, let him wallow in that confusion, and then just pull a "sike! See I'm not an asshole! She's alive! Everything's cool now right?"
Like if your parental Figur behaves like this, remove them from your life... (- _-)
Maybe it's because I feel like some characters just never had slow moments to properly build a relationship, like... When tf has roy ever not been an ass towards Ed?, so I personally just don't get the entire parental roy thing, Hawkeye too, she cares, ig? Her talk with Ed and how her gaze softens around the Elrics... Shows that... But, parental??? Nah -
Maybe I don't get it, maybe someone could tag me and explain, but from my view the only two people who were remotely ever parental to the elric brother's were Hughes and Maria Ross, it felt like they were trying at least...
