LIFE AND ADVICE: The Magic and the Letdowns of First Kisses

Our teen life writer Jemma (faxei) talks about the expectations and realities of a teen's first kiss.
INTRODUCTION
I am the writer for the topic "Teenage Life" which pretty much explains itself! I'm a teenage girl so I'm hoping i can relate to most people and if not i will try to! I will talk about boys and Facebook and friends and all that stuff and I'm here to help out or give advice whenever! just message this blog or my blog faxei.tumblr.com anonymous or not and make any request for an article or whatever and I'd be happy to write about it! I'm really excited to write and i hope you like my stuff! Enjoy the article! xx
So if you’re like me and you love romance books and movies then you probably have some sort of expectation about your first kiss. But if you’ve never had a boyfriend, hooked up, or whatever… Then seriously, don’t get your expectations TOO high. Everyone is going to have their first kiss and at the time it’s going to feel like the most important thing in the world. For example, I’m sure most of you have had at least a primary school crush and imagined what it would be like for you to talk more or be really close or go out or something more than just nudging each other’s school chair on the way to the pencil sharpener. Let’s just say the real stuff isn’t as great as you might imagine. For me, I’m pretty hopeless with guys. Primary school I had a few crushes, but hey, I’m boring, unattractive, and they didn’t work out. Year 7 I discovered makeup and straighteners so I could look slightly presentable for school and I scored myself a super awkward, short, emotionally-unstable boyfriend who was a bit hard to look at. After a month of small talk, texting and the daily morning hug that everyone would cheer on I decided it was time to end the relationship. I told him I wanted to be friends and he burst into tears and stormed off. I was a bitch breaking his heart but I couldn’t help my slutty genes, but a spree at Supre cheered my little 12 year old heart up in no time. He moved to Canada a month later and haven’t seen him since. Anyway, no boys until just after my 13th birthday. We have this supposed joint school dance that desperate people (like me at the time) go to, to pretty much have their first kiss, or “hook up". Now can I just remind you that I classify “kissing" and “hooking up" completely different things. Yeah. Hooking up… Yuck. Don’t get your hopes up kids. I remember exactly, I was in a swarm of sweaty Year 7s wearing galaxy skirts with their crop tops hanging out and my friend pretty much screamed at some super tall averagely hot guy and the next minute I look up a giraffe is sticking his minty tongue down my throat. And when people say this, that’s actually what it feels like: tongue in, tongue out, tongue in, tongue out and I started jabbing my tongue back down his throat and pretended to know what I was doing. Basically my whole first kiss with the dream guy didn’t go quite as well as I imagined. Maybe I just have a really sad life and you will all marry Prince Charming but I think everyone has been brainwashed into thinking that it will all be perfect. Now I’m not saying it won’t be memorable, because I am for as sure as hell not going to forget my first “slobber". But I’m just saying don’t worry about it. I get messages asking what’s it like and how to be prepared and what to do. Just forget it and when the time comes, it will be fine. It will happen at some point and it doesn’t matter if you’re the first or last out of your friends. Whether it’s overlooking a sunset in Bali with your attractive boyfriend who you never thought you’d fall for or maybe you’re playing truth or dare in a bush with an emo who smells like weed… Who cares? Maybe you’ll regret it at first, but in 60 years’ time you’ll be telling your grandkids and it’s not going to be as important as it was when you were 16 and wanting to run away with your high school sweetheart. Maybe your first kiss will be perfect; I don’t know. Though remember there will always be sweaty hands or the awkward drive home, stumbling with words or maybe your bracelet gets caught in his hair or your phone rings at the wrong time. You can’t plan everything even though it might be the perfect time at the perfect place with the perfect guy. But you won’t ever have background music because this is real life and not all first kisses are as interesting as they may seem. I know this is all cheesy but just live how you are now because there is today and tomorrow and the day after that but soon they will all just be a long time ago.

FILM REVIEW: After Earth (2013)
Our film critic Kenzie (lushwater) reviews M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth, starring Jaden and Will Smith.
Hey guys, I'm Kenzie from New Zealand and I'm the new movie writer! I'm 18 and I'm studying Law at the best law school in the country and somehow managing to maintain my blog on the side. We get movies a bit later than most countries but I will always give an honest opinion of any movie I see, and I will also take requests if you choose to send me one! So let's kick off my first review!
AFTER EARTH REVIEW
With a rating of only 4.9 on IMDb and 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, a lot of people would have not even gone to see the movie After Earth, which starred Will Smith and his son Jaden. However, I don't tend to read movie reviews before I see the movie, so my boyfriend and I went along anyway. It was actually quite good, the story was strong, if paced a little slowly, and the special effects were good if not great. For those of you who know absolutely nothing about this movie, I'll give you an outline. Many years from now, humanity has left Earth and Earth has evolved in our absence, becoming extremely deadly. Will's character and Jaden's character, who are father and son Cypher and Kitai Raige, are stranded there, the only survivors of a spaceship crash, and with Cypher severely injured, Kitai must be the one to save them.
The movie opens with an explanation of what exactly happened to the human race to make them leave Earth. It is claimed that this happened 1000 years ago, but the issue I take with this is that later in the movie it is claimed that Earth has evolved to be hostile to humans in this 1000 years, which I find implausible, personally. The explanation is good, however, and it sets the scene for the story very well, even with an introduction to the deadly creatures faced by the main character later in the film.
I liked pretty much all of the rest of the movie, with that slight inaccuracy being my only real problem with it. The story definitely could have progressed a little quicker, but there were no boring moments, at least not for me. The special effects were great, and the story was written and directed well.
I genuinely enjoyed this movie and I would definitely pay to see it again. I would also recommend it to others in a heartbeat. It's a very interesting movie, and the casting choice of Will and Jaden was in my opinion the right one.
My rating: ★★★★
