Passing
They tore the sky apart that day. The day it all went down.
The holes in the sky were like empty voids, drawing the gaze of all who lay their eyes upon them. And all who did no longer looked away. Their bodies shriveled upon their skeletons, clinging on to life even as the void took their souls.
They say we're better off. That eventually, humanity would be saved. What little of us there were left were assured of a future - because we were the ones to be left behind.
We are the Chosen. We inherit the Earth.
And we will survive.
***
I passed one of the soulless today.
I kept my eyes downcast, averting my gaze. Away from the darkness in the skies.
But I thought I saw the faint glimmer of a smile upon her opalescent lips.
And I felt guilt.

The fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

It's been a long time since I talked to you.
But I'm used to holding people at arm's length.
Every once in a while, I look over the long list of people I no longer talk to.
I want to believe that people can remain friends.
I want to believe that if I run into you on the street, you'd still give me a smile and wave and a nice warm hello.
***
But we are only human.
And there's only so much we can care about.

Storytelling I
The young reporter was extremely happy to find the most interesting man in the world at the run-down cafe. He would, in an exclusive interview, finally procure from the old man himself, the secret of how he became the most interesting man in the world.
But the old man only smiled and looked to the side of the cafe table. He pointed at a scruffy-looking, homeless man and told the reporter:
"Look here. That is the second most interesting man in the world. Ask him about his story."
The reporter tried to protest, but eventually acceded.
The homeless man looked scared, even somewhat afraid as the reporter came over, but gradually spun out a tale of how he came to this land in search of opportunity, of buoyant hopes dashed and dreams of the family he left behind.
***
When he finished, he thanked the homeless man for his story, bought him a cup of coffee for his time and looked back at the table where the most interesting man in the world had been sitting.
Naturally, he was gone. The reporter sighed.
Now he'd have to track him down again.

Beautiful
The most beautiful girl in the room had eyes that twinkled, sparks of dancing light that bathed her surroundings like dim moonlight.
The second most beautiful girl in the room had an entranced smile, lips like dark cherries against alabaster skin.
And the third most beautiful girl in the room?
Well, there's that smooth, velvety voice of dark chocolate and rose petals. Delicate features, an almost porcelain babydoll.
***
But most importantly, she has a really sharp knife.
