Why Nanami is one of the only people who can really understand Geto

Haibara was Nanami's closest friend and classmate. He and Getou were shown to be hit the hardest by his death. It probably made him realize the same thing as Getou: In their journey as sorcerers, not all of them will make it out alive.

Unlike Gojo or other sorcerers, Nanami feels tired of being one. Just as how Getou finds it difficult to keep consuming curses, Nanami finds it difficult to keep fighting them. He gets hurt and watches other around him get hurt too. He's not immortal or untouchable like Gojo. Being a sorcerer is tiring to him. He left the world of sorcery because he found no meaning in it, the exhaustion overpowering his will to protect people. He came back only when he realized that there are people he wants to protect like the baker, and stayed because of people like Yuji (who definitely reminds him of Haibara).

Nanami understands why Getou left, because his exhaustion overpowered his will to protect people too. Only, Getou didn't find people to protect again. Gojo and Shoko could both protect thenselves just fine. And to Getou, the people he was supposed to be protecting weren't worth protecting at all.

"I will never be frustrated by my own uselessness" - What saved Nanami from going down the same fate as Getou is his humility and understanding that he's "useless". He was never powerful to begin with, not powerful enough to protect Haibara let alone to change the world. So he developed realistic dreams rather than an idealistic worldview. He wants nothing more than to retire and live out his old age in comfort. He didn't want to fix the world because he understood that he had no power to do so. And yet, he understands why Getou sought to change the world through such drastic means.

I doubt that Nanami found Getou's reasoning to kill all non-sorcerers to be reasonable. After all, he cares about non-sorcerers the same way he does sorcerers, showing how his moral compass is strong. But he understands that what it feels like to be driven to the point where you feel like you have no other choice. Nanami's only option was to quit sorcery and Getou's was, well, massacre.

That's why he still respects Getou, even after everything the man had done. he understands the decision he came to make because he understands how painful it is to keep living in this kind of society where you're seen as nothing but a disposable cog in the system.
