Hello,
dear little ice cubes! The page has been a little bit quiet because we both were very busy doing projects outside of the #iczine. We hope you are also accomplishing your projects and hope that this letter finds you well!
Reminder As you may or may not know, the fifth edition of the zine launched on March 1st! [link] Do you like it? Do you think there could be some improvement? Please, tell us what you think! 😊 Issue 6 will revolve around the theme of water and as always, you are free to interpret it however you like, whether it is fiction/non-fiction text (prose, poetry), collage, a comic, photography, an illustration…
Announcement Why have the zine updates been dormant? The silence is due to some changes in the team… Because of life and other reasons, Driva @drivaritar has decided to step back from the role as co-editor of ICZ. She’ll still be contributing to the zine in other ways but has decided it’s time to let someone else take over her seat. This means we’ll be looking for someone (maybe you?! 😃) who has an eye for layout and a love for graphic design. Together with Marlene @m0rla , you will work to develop the zine and make it grow! Are you skilled in Photoshop and InDesign? Do you have experience from previous zine projects, or do you feel this is something you want to learn? Please fill out the google form provided.
application
If you know someone who would be interested, please, forward this to them!
Thank you so much for your continued support,
Driva & Marlene

Next Friday, February 1st, we finally open up for submissions again! Issue 1/19 of Ice Cubes Zine is themed Nostalgia. We are living in a time were we glorify and dream about the past, especially the 80’s and 90’s, through tv-series, movies and internet aesthetics. What are you nostalgic about? Have a think, work it out and send it our way! We are looking forward to seeing what you’ll come up with!

Old Rule #1: I have to be perfect
Sylvia Plath once said that "it hurts not being perfect". Of course, it can be painful not being immaculate. After all, "perfection" also means to be imperturbable. Since conception, we are exposed to the many impressions of this world: we are prone to hurt and be hurt but also to heal and solace others. "Perfection" is just a pie in the sky -- reaching it is impossible; at least if one regards "perfection" in the biblical sense of flawlessness and remarkable purity. We are not able to reach "perfection" in terms of faultlessness or falling prey to urges. We are not made of marble. Each one of us carries chains that make us who we are, they are our flaws and virtues. But what to make of these chains? ⠀ What did the ancient Greek philosophers think of "perfection"? Plato's definition of perfection was simply of "good". It is a state you attain when striving for harmony with your surroundings but also with yourself. Thus, anyone would be able to accomplish it.⠀ ⠀
Tumblr media
So when Plath said that "it hurts not being perfect", did she bemoan her inability to live in harmony with herself and others or that she didn't know what to make of her chains? Did she not believe in her abilities? ⠀ We have to accept that those chains, our little imperfections, faults and quirks don't have to weigh us down but that we should embrace and make the best out of them because they make us unique. We need to make ourselves aware of what path of perfectionism we are on and consider to switch to one that is benevolent of everyone. ⠀ Let's make ourselves aware of what is affecting us, what makes us perfectionistic? There is always another way, a compromise to ease the pressure that eventually leads to good. And how sufficient is it to feel good and content, to not feel consumed by overthinking everything? Perfect.

Meet Cosima @cosimamontavoci , one of our new and talented zine contributors 👌🏼 We hope you will enjoy her answers to our o so important questionnaire!
🍦
1. If you'd personify summer, or a heatwave, how would it look and be like?
- My cat is called Frigo (which means fridge in Italian) and she's fat, she definitely personifies Italian summer properly.
🍦
2. Apart from ice cream, how do you like keeping cool during summer?
- It is my usual habit to hug a penguin and stay away from furry cats.
🍦 3. Is your creativity affected by the holiday mode?
- The summer for me is a moment to collect ideas, basically runny brain and melting body.
🍦
4. In general, what is your opinion about summer?
- My opinion about summer is the opposite of my opinion about winter.

Say Hi 👋🏼 to Bernadette @the_animal_studio , one of our brilliant zine contributors. We wanted her opinion on some very important matters; please enjoy this mini-interview and be sure to check out her amazing art.
🍦
1. If you'd personify summer, or a heatwave, how would it look and be like?
-  A huge big monster with long fingers and a big laughing mouth. The monster behaves like a child playing Fireball, having a lot of fun.
🍦
2. Apart from ice cream, how do you like keeping cool during summer?
- I’m staying in my empty bathtub with some pillows, my sketchbook, while listening to the radio station: Napoletan music only.
🍦
3. Is your creativity affected by the holiday mode?
- Yes, I do create on different places as the rest of the year. In summer I’m not traveling. I’m staying in my town Berlin and try to find as many new places as possible.
🍦
4. In general, what is your opinion about summer?
- I’m waiting for autumn, winter and spring.

Issue #2 is out! Click on the link above to get access.
Woohoo! The second issue of the Ice Cubes zine is finally out. Many great people contributed their artwork - thank you so much for that! This edition focuses on self-presentation, hence the theme hi, this is me. Additionally, Lou and Marlene have shared their views on the question:
How do you present yourself to someone you have never met before?
Stay tuned for the next issue this summer, too! Get those ideas cooking already because the next theme will revolve around your own interpretation of ice cream and we are planning much more! So stay tuned and until then:
