Shimanchu Podcast: Ichariba Choodee
20 posts
Okinawan. Ryukyuan. Liuchiu. Uchinanchu. Shimanchu. There are many more names for the peoples of these islands. Hear the many voices and stories of those identifying as Shimanchu (or Uchinachu). Celebrating and preserving our culture, connecting the diaspora, and both proudly and humbly educating and learning along the way. Ichariba Choodee is a beautiful Ryukyan saying translating roughly to, 'When we meet, we become brothers, sisters, family.' We re-blog posts relating to the Ryukyus.

🌺 EPISODE 8! Henoko: Scratching the Surface Join Mariko (@marikobtv) and Erica (@ekunihisa) with guest speakers Maia Hibbett and Kaiya Yonamine (@ka.i.ya_ @kaiya.okinawa) as we begin to discuss the current situation in Henoko, Okinawa. Around 25 years ago, Henoko, a coastal village in Nago, was announced as the relocation site for the US Air Force base Futenma. We’ll learn a little bit about the history of Henoko, including Japanese and US military relations that set the foundation for the present day circumstances, who’s active in the movement protesting the base relocation, environmental racism, weave in personal stories and thoughts, and try to keep it light as we talk about a difficult and heavy topic. We acknowledge the factors at play evolve constantly, and some details may have changed since the original recording in March 2022. We wish to share these important reflections with the intention to bring more consistent and timely updates to our community and listeners in addition to our regular programming. We are also pleased to include our first Kickstarter backer interview with the lovely Momi Cummings (@kuuleimomi) #henoko #okinawa #ryukyu #diaspora (at Henoko) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cch5cZEuF43/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Yesterday, I went to volunteer with my family for the elderly people.
Wearing traditional Okinawan costumes, we played Okinawan folk songs and pop songs. I played a synthesizer, my father played the sanshin (traditional Okinawan instrument), my mother was in charge of vocals, and my sister played Okinawan drums.
I hope they had a good time with Okinawan music☺️
👇It’s me. Wearing Okinawan traditional costumes.

"SPEAK, OKINAWA" NEEDS TO BE HEARD
“SPEAK, OKINAWA” NEEDS TO BE HEARD
I don’t know what I was expecting when I cracked open Speak, Okinawa by Elizabeth Miki Brina this morning, but it wasn’t this. I just spent the entire day unable to put this book down, weeping and raging. I only paused long enough to send a Kindle copy to my mother and order a copy to keep as mine is from the library. I will be sending copies to my adult children as well, so they can understand…

How did the global and regional circulation of resources, techniques, and technologies transform local ecologies, practices, and livelihoods? Located between the East China Sea and the Pacific Ocean, the Ryukyu Kingdom (?-1879; modern-day Okinawa, Japan) was a vital entrepôt in the early modern world, facilitating the movement of goods and people between northeast Asia and southeast Asia. This talk situates craft practices and material knowledge at the center of Ryukyu history to explore the historical entanglements of materials, bodies, and skills in the making and remaking of culture.
BuYun Chen is Associate Professor of Asian history at Swarthmore College. She is the author of Empire of Style: Silk and Fashion in Tang China (University of Washington Press, 2019). Her current research explores the relationship between craft production, statecraft practices, and ecological change in the independent Ryukyu Kingdom (modern-day Okinawa, Japan) from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.
Date | Time November 3, 2021 | 12:15 – 1:30 PM [PST]
