Small fantasy worldbuilding elements you might want to think about:
A currency that isnât gold-standard/having gold be as valuable as tin
A currency that runs entirely on a perishable resource, like cocoa beans
A clock that isnât 24-hours
More or less than four seasons/seasons other than the ones we know
Fantastical weather patterns like irregular cloud formations, iridescent rain
Multiple moons/no moon
Planetary rings
A northern lights effect, but near the equator
Roads that arenât brown or grey/black, like San Juanâs blue bricks
Jewelry beyond precious gems and metals
Marriage signifiers other than wedding bands
The husband taking the wife's name / newlyweds inventing a new surname upon marriage
No concept of virginity or bastardry
More than 2 genders/no concept of gender
Monotheism, but not creationism
Gods that donât look like people
Domesticated pets that arenât re-skinned dogs and cats
Some normalized supernatural element that has nothing to do with the plot
Magical communication that isnât Fantasy Zoom
âBooksâ that arenât bound or scrolls
A nonverbal means of communicating, like sign language
A race of people who are obligate carnivores/ vegetarians/ vegans/ pescatarians (not religious, biological imperative)
Iâve done about half of these myself in one WIP or another and a little detail here or there goes a long way in reminding the audience that this isnât Kansas anymore.

Late night walks
wc: 1k maraurders m.list navigation
Lily made her rounds through the 2nd floor of the unbearably large castle as she usually did on tuesday nights, thanks to her prefect duties. Normally she didnât mind going to bed a little later to make sure everyone was following the rules and regulations, but tonight was different, her older sister, Petunia had sent her a letter. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, upon opening the note Lily found it contained some rather horrible comments about Lily and the friends she has made over the years at Hogwarts, talking about how strange and unusual they were.
The part that stung the most though was the fact that it was clear that their parents made Petunia write the letter. If it wasnât for Lilyâs mother Petunia wouldâve just kept acting as if she didnât exist. The fact that her own sister refused to acknowledge her anymore quite frankly made her feel a little sick.
Lily knew it was out of jealousy, after all Petunia was always the envious sort, but she couldnât help but dwell on it, and although she was silent about it and made no noise beside the light sniffle, she was shedding a fair few tears.
Tonight was a peaceful summer night, moonlight found itself streaming in through the archways and pillars, the tulips and poppies were swaying hypnotically in the flowerbeds of the transfiguration courtyard.
Suddenly she heard footsteps shuffling and light laughter from behind her. At last! Lily finally had someone to let her upset and anger out on. (unless it was a first year, she never could bring herself to scold those adorable faces) She turned around as fast as her body would allow⌠but nobody was there.
How was that possible?
She couldâve sworn that she heard snickering. Maybe she just needed to get some rest and clear her head, she probably looked a right state from the crying she had been through during her prefect rounds.
By twelve oâclock Lily had made her way all round the second floor and was preparing to make her way back to the common room.
âWell, that was a fun walkâ Lily whispered to herself, â her nose was blocked from the tears and as a result her voice sounded raspy â she found she had a habit of doing that when she was stressed or tired.
âRight, now I can finally get to be-â She murmuring abruptly. There it was, that noise again. Lily closed her eyes, took a deep breath and turned around, hoping that she was just making it up all in her head and that she could just go back to her dorm and get some well deserved rest.
But as usual she was let down and that sleep she was fantasising about wasnât going to be happening anytime soon, because James Potter was standing in front of her, with a crooked grin plastered onto his pale, moonlight covered face, his wild brunette curls piled on top of his head and his glasses slightly askew.
âPotter? What are you doing out this late, curfew was hours ago!â Lily exclaimed. âYouâre not planning another one of those stupid pranks again are you, you know Iâll have to tell Filch this time, Iâm not going to cover for you again! Dumbledore knew, you know, about your previous trick, and he knew I was lying about not knowing too! I wonât be losing my place in Dumbledoreâs good book just so you donât have to get another detention!â Lily was rambling, speaking at the speed of light. She knew it but she couldnât help it, she had to let the emotions out, she had bottled them up for far too long. âSpeaking of detentions you do realise you and Black are brining Gryffindorâs house points down a significant amount, arenât you two always the ones going on about âhouse prideâ anyway? Just because you donât care about homework doesnât mean you have to drag everyone else down with you!â Ok now she was definitely saying too much and definitely overreacting.
James stared at her with his eyebrows pinched together meanwhile a look of confusion and offense appeared on his face. Was he seriously hurt that she was having a go at him? Actually maybe not, thinking logically he was probably bewildered that someone would dare speak with such attitude towards The James Potter. Well, thatâs what Lily figured anyway.
But just as quick as he let the mask slip, and Lily saw James looking the most sincere sheâd ever seen him, he pulled it back on. âGosh Evans, I didnât know you were that desperate to talk to me, you know if I knew you wanted to make conversation with me this bad, I wouldâve started sneaking up on you more often.â
Lily just stared at James trying to come up with a quick comeback, but before Lily could get a word in he spoke again. âYouâre not crying are you?â
âWhat? No! Of course notâŚâ
âRight, well I wasnât trying to be a nosy sod, I just thought it would be a good laugh to scare you, thatâs allâ He added defensively, as if he was afraid he had hurt her feelings.
âHow did you manage to say unseen anyway?â
âDoesnât matter, stop changing the subject, youâre supposed to be lecturing about house points or lying to me about the fact that you werenât just crying, remember?â
âI wasnât!â
âOk, ok calm down it was just a joke!â James said in mock surrender whilst giving her a roll of his eyes, that sly smirk making its way back onto his face. The one that Lily found her hatred for getting less and less with each day.
Lily focused on James with a look of disgust, a small crease forming between her eyebrows, ignoring her warming cheeks and the odd warm sensation she could feel beneath her rib cage. Though she couldnât quite make out what was causing it. Maybe she could but she just didnât want to. All she did know was that it certainly, definitely, 100 percent was totally not the fact that James Potter had just been flirting with her.

Looking for someone?
wc: 1.2k marauders m.list navigation
The sun casted a warm, golden glow upon the four sixth year girls in their dorm room as Lily was sitting up against the headboard of her four poster bed busying herself with plaiting her auburn hair for the upcoming Hogsmede trip that was taking place in a few hours from now.
âOh, I do hope that Black and his friends arenât planning to go to The Three Broomsticks as well, I donât think I can bear to listen to another one of Siriusâ embarrassing attempts at a jokeâ Voiced Marlene from the windowsill, sat with her legs in an uncomfortable looking crisscross whilst painting her nails with a cherry red eye glitter that she used as a makeshift nail varnish, even though it was bound to rub off before even stepping foot out of the Fat Ladyâs portrait. Nevertheless it was the perfect colour to compliment her dirty blonde, almost brown hair.
âI doubt it, I overheard them in the common room last night saying they were going to go straight to Zonkos to buy more dung bombs, or something like thatâ Replied Lily, though her voice was slightly strained by the bobby pins that she was gripping awkwardly between her teeth, her hands already occupied with braiding.
âWow! First you voluntarily sat next to James in Transfiguration on Friday last week and now you're listening in on his conversations, whatâs next study dates in the library? Honestly, just admit it, you have feelings for him!â Mary Declared in a teasing yet somehow also sympathetic manner.
âOh and donât forget at dinner when she actually laughed at that weird pickup line he always uses!â Marlene said and Mary flashed a quick grin at her.
âYeah, I thought you said⌠When was it? Four or five months ago, you were going to ignore him from now on and that you âdonât find James funny nor care what he has to sayâ after that situation with Snape last may?â Pandora added to the conversation from inside the bathroom.
âOk maybe I was just a bit angry at him for messing with Snape, besides Iâm over it now and Iâm not friends with Severus anymore so itâs not like itâs any of his business who I decide to spend my time with anywayâ Lily told everyone hastily. âAlso what about you Pen, have you finished doing your makeup? Weâd all better hurry and get down to breakfast, youâve got your date with Dorcas soon and we donât want you to be late like last time.â
âYep! Iâm almost ready, I just need to finish doing my eyes and then Iâm done!â
The room fell into a comfortable silence after that, which was only broken after Pandora made her way out of the bathroom with her hair tied up in a loose French twist, a long flowing skirt and glittering pink eyeshadow that complimented the sequins sewn into her soft-green top. The girls all gave their compliments with Lily encouraging Pandora to give them a quick twirl before heading out the dorm room and to the Great Hall for breakfast.
ÂˇË ŕź âšËËâşÂˇË ŕź âšËËâşÂˇË ŕź âšËËâşÂˇË ŕź âšËËâşÂˇË ŕź âšËËâşÂˇË ŕź âšËËâşÂˇË ŕź
Once Marlene, Lily and Mary got settled down on the benches at the Gryffindor table Pandora helped herself to a quick piece of toast and said her goodbyes to the girls before making her way down into the dungeons to meet Dorcas outside of her common room.
Not long after Marlene finished eating her porridge (that she without a doubt put far too much sugar in) just in front of her she noticed Lily frequently looking down the table and at the entrance of the hall, failing miserably at what one could assume was the attempt of nonchalance.
âLooking for someone?â
Lily gave a small dismissive hum in return to Marleneâs comment and stayed focused on the entrance hall visible through the large open doors.
âLilyyyyyyyâ said Malene in a sing-song tone with a half irritated half amused look on her face. After that didnât work she resorted to waving her hand and snapping her fingers in front of the red-head. âHonestly, if youâre going to claim to not have feelings for a boy, maybe you should at least try not to look like a dog waiting for its owner to return whilst searching for him!â
This claim and the sudden hand movement snapped Lily out of her trance and she peered down at her scrambled eggs with an embarrassed look and gave Mary a sheepish smile that didnât quite reach her eyes, in which Mary returned with a playful shove and a grin that made Lily feel a little better. That was the thing with Mary, she always knew what to do or what to say in awkward moments, it wasnât hard for Lily to understand why Mary was so well-liked and popular amongst the boys, she was undeniably very attractive and had an even better personality that made it almost impossible for anyone to dislike her.
Mary tucked a corkscrew curl behind her ear. âThereâs no point looking for him Lils, he and those bloody marauders were at that Ravenclaw part last night, I heard Ludwig-â
âitâs Lupin actuallyâ Cut in Marlene
âYes well, you get who I mean though, anyway apparently he had too much to drink and vomited everywhere and it was a nightmare to clean up, so I doubt the four of them will be coming down anytime soon, they all are probably dealing with a nightmare of a hangover, bless themâ
âWell, thatâs enough about boys!â Said Marlene with forced eagerness, sensing Lilyâs uncomfortability and trying to change the subject âWhoâs excited for Hogsmede then? Weâd better go looking for a new dress for you, Lils. After all, you keep wearing that same old dress to the slug club, itâs getting awfully repetitive and Iâm sure Mary wants an excuse to buy more jeans anywayâ
Mary and Lily laughed and decided that Marlene was right and going clothes shopping before heading to get a butterbeer sounded like a pleasurable enough Saturday for them.
âRight then, I think itâs time to get going donât you?â
âYepâ
âMhmâ
ÂˇË ŕź âšËËâşÂˇË ŕź âšËËâşÂˇË ŕź âšËËâşÂˇË ŕź âšËËâşÂˇË ŕź âšËËâşÂˇË ŕź âšËËâşÂˇË ŕź
Wrapped up tight in scarves, hats, gloves and coats, already tired from trying on so many clothes, the girls eventually made it to The Three Broomsticks and sat down at a booth in the corner, it was loud and the tables were sticky with butterbeer. It reminded Lily of when she would visit pubs with her parents and older sister after being out on a too-long dog walk or bike ride. She loved learning magic and living at school, receiving her acceptance letter to Hogwarts was easily the best thing that had ever happened to her, but sometimes she really did miss home.
The girls keenly exchanged gossip, giggled enthusiastically about the drama that took place at the Ravenclaw party and played a game of truth or dare, but nobody out of the three was brave enough to pick dare so they ended up telling their secrets and most humiliating stories. Though it wasnât quite as good as they had originally expected it to be as they were close enough friends that they had either already shared most of the things with each other before in a late night conversation or were together when it happened.
Lily would never say it to their faces but it was moments like these that she was endlessly grateful for. She couldnât imagine life without Mary and Marlene. She didnât want any of this to change, ever.

reminder that it's sirius who lily canonically sent a letter to when she was in hiding. it's sirius who lily called padfoot. it's sirius who was the godfather of her son. it's sirius who she trusted her child's life to. it's sirius who she wanted as secret-keeper. not remus "number one james fan" lupin. if either of the two was lily's best friend, it was most definitely sirius, who was litr described as jily's best friend multiple times !!
