What I mean when I say "patriarchy": A set of socially maintained systems, values, and ideologies which perpetuate arbitrary and outdated ideas about gender and human sexuality, encompassing social phenomena like homophobia, transphobia, and sexism.

What people THINK I mean when I say "patriarchy": A secret brotherhood that meets together once a month to discuss how best to oppress women, and are in control of all of the world's governments.

Brilliant. Language does matter. This really made me stop and think. I have a 3 year old and my husband and I just today were talking about how "opinionated" and "what a character" and how "determined" he is. As our family grows, if we ever have a girl, I plan to keep this in mind: not to label the same behavior differently for a boy and a girl. And I love the idea of teaching either to be mindful of their audience. Great post!

Role model to beauty model: quadriplegic SFU student breaks barriers

So proud of this young woman's spirit and passion to conquer the hurdles before her, find new opportunities and inspire others. 

Excerpt from CTV British Columbia's article: 

“I certainly have never seen a quadriplegic model,” she says. “I know there are other women out there that are trying to do it. The more the merrier. Let’s get out message out there and spread it to the world.”

When asked about being another kind of model – a role model – she answers modestly.

“That’s a tough question. I would like to say that I aspire to be a role model, especially for women that are recently injured or even men,” she says.

“If they’re struggling to find the good in their accident I hope that they can see what I’ve done with my life and understand that this is really just the beginning of a brand new, exciting adventure.”

And Kruger has a good shot of embarking on a new adventure of her own.

Blogger Hides 200 “Magic Wands” Across Richmond 

Magic wands, hidden around Richmond by Patience Salgado, invite kids to create GOOD in RVA. I just came across Style Weekly's article about it. I love this idea. Just absolutely love it! For kids and for everyone. Living life is awesome. And creating more good around our home, our cities, our country, and our world is amazing. Every effort and action truly DOES count and make a difference. It's things like this that make me stop and remember to get out and "do" more in my own community. My husband and I were just talking about things we can do around Richmond, for RVA and for the RVA community. But that's just it, we need to stop talking about it and get out there! Thanks for the awesome and positive reminder, Patience. I'll be thinking about what GOOD I can help create in RVA!

For me, I want to be part of art and kindness changing the place I love and connecting people. I want to make stuff and do lots of guerrilla kindness that let strangers and my community know there is joy and love in the world and that they are cared for and not alone…and invite them to pass it on if they feel called.

So now maybe your head and heart are filling with ideas, or you have no idea and need to think more about it or maybe you need to go take a nap, but either way, it all counts and thanks for being part of this project. Creativity is not an "add-on" but calls for radical change in our schools

Sir Ken Robinson explains how creativity is a transformative principle that can guide a re-imagining of schools in America. The current dropout crisis is an indictment of the status quo and leads to enormous social costs. He calls for a more balanced curriculum, where learning is personalized, and all kids can find out "what they are good at."

I never tire of listening or reading what Sir Ken Robinson has to say. My goal is to step up and try to make a difference this year (in some way) because I have long agreed with this thinking.
