Poets, crafters and creatives know that sometimes it's a tactile or visual element of a piece that allows it to transcend from ink slapped onto a page into a work or art that entices all of the readers senses. Big box craft stores have ground down the smaller paper and stationary shops that fed the demand for the discerning consumer and ultimately whittled down the production of the more interesting and niche paper stocks.

If you're not familiar with "Onion Skin" paper, it was used heavily between the early 1900's into the late 1980's when typewriters gave way to computer printers. During it's time in the sun it found it's home in mediums such as typing, cell animation, calligraphy and even more specified applications like lightening the weight of airmail parcels. Lightweight and translucent in nature, Onion Skin paper has found a new life thanks to hobbies like origami, crafting, model trains and the resurgence of typing on typewriters again.

Each pack contains 10 pcs of genuine, vintage new-old stock onion skin paper sized 4.25" x 5.5" and comes wrapped in a hand folded, glossy page repurposed from a damaged vintage art book.

This vintage Gillette safety razor is a utilitarian dream: It performs a basic function and it performs it VERY well. It's no surprise the the American military chose the 1940's Gillette Tech Ball End (Date-Code: predates coding; Govt Issue WW2) as the standard issue razor for GI's during WWII. After 80 years not only can these little razors still be found but they can still gently clear cut the toughest body hair you can throw at it and it'll keep coming back for more.

This little clean machine is a three piece safety razor and screws in straight and tight in order to provide a close, clean shave when paired with a quality blade. It's 10/10 on smooth functionality however the metal components do show some signs of aesthetic wear, particularly where the bronze plating is showing uneven wear on the head and top and the handle. Outside of the plating wear, given proper care this vintage Gillette Tech should last to shave another generation. While this razor has been cleaned using an ultrasonic cleaner, disinfected and polished to bring back it's natural luster it is highly recommended that you fully wash this razor with hot water and disinfectant soap prior to using.

Nearly done with this Facit 1620 that came to me absolutely frozen. Normally I would have made it a "catch and release" for the potential trouble but this little beauty was 100% outside of the frozen carriage and big ole' paint chip on the ribbon plate AND it is Script to boot. Freshly Serviced: I was contacted by a man who has had this 1936 Royal Deluxe in his family since it was manufactured. It had originally belonged to his grandfather and was passed down to his father, then to him and now he intends to pass it down to his adult son who is fresh off the picket line from the writers strike out in LA. It is my firmly held belief that of the MANY things that typewriters can be, one of the most fulfilling functions they can serve as is multi-faceted generational wealth. They represent the power and the gift to create in analog.

And since I'm a sucker for a good story I agreed to clean and service this old beauty so that a TV & Film writer could make it sing again. Due to its age and the fantastic shape of the crinkle coating on the paint I took it slow with this one so as not to disturb any of the well preserved aspects while bringing the duller ones back to life. It needed some little things here and there, along the way someone must have been a night owl and removed the spring for the bell and bent the trip mechanism to ensure that it wouldn't ring. After replacing the spring and reforming the trip this machine is back to singing the song of its people.

I love these old Royal "A" and "O" models because the style can't be beat. Both the slick bodied paint and the crinkle paint are equally appealing when bound in the chrome plates trim. I believe these models were the high water mark for Royal typewriters with regard to producing machines of timeless aesthetic, particularly in a time where the United States hadn't even pulled itself out of the great depression.

If you don't currently own one of these and you're in the market for some eye candy you could do a whole lot worse than a Royal Deluxe "O" or "A" model.

Just when I thought it was over, they pulled me back in! Some weeks back I was contacted by editors at @paolalanemag regarding my #Hanxtypewriter . They were pooling stories from recipients and were asking permission to add mine to their list for their next issue. I sent them some photos and some copy thinking I'd just be a face on the crowd and happy to be included (as I've been throughout this whole experience). Then I received a copy of the issue and I was absolutely shocked at just how much of my submission they used. Full disclosure: I had only heard faint rumblings of this publication prior to being contacted and had done some satisfactory research before agreeing to participate, however I was not fully prepared for what I received in the mail...

I am a 41 year old man and can remember the last "big stand" in the production of high quality magazines, and the subsequent fall from grace as the content became more accessible by being published online as the Internet took root in households worldwide. You saw thick, glossy magazines with great artwork and interesting articles backslide into Sunday circular advertising inserts printed on matte newsprint and containing more ads than actual content (I'm firing shots at you Rolling Stone).

So imagine my surprise when I opened the mailer to see a magazine who's overall quality seemed delived directly from the golden age of quality publication. The cover was thick and glossy like photos you just picked up from the 1 hour kiosk in the parking lot of your local shopping center. The inside was brimming with content written by and about makers tending the flames of their passion through their small businesses. I am thoroughly impressed by small production magazines like Paola Lane and @soupcanmagazine and urge everyone to dig deep and support these publications so that they can continue to raise the bar for what the arts can be!

There's something very interesting to me about the technical methods they developed in the last days before the fall of the typewriter gave way to the rise of the word processor. My fascination with the IBM selectrics and their varied and curious little type elements is no secret at this point but it's worth mentioning that they weren't the only innovation when electric typewriters were en vogue. 

Enter: The Daisy Wheel. These flat diskettes typically contained 96 characters (much like the later Selectric 3 elements) and boasted the ability to print type up to 3 times faster than that of typical IBM electric typewriters. While I cannot personally attest to this claim I can say that I have found them to provide a much quieter typing experience than the selectrics or comparable Smith Corona machines. In fact, once you get over the nagging expectation of thrashing percussion there's almost a calming, white noise effect to it that really makes you wish they'd been produced in smaller portable sizes that don't claim an entire workspace. 

But for those entrepid typists who've got space to spare and an affinity for tactile tactics executed quickly, quietly and qwerty you can start your new addiction with this awesome Daisy wheel diskette specifically for brother typewriters.

🎶🫧So FRESH and So CLEAN🫧🎶Back with ANOTHER finished client machine; this time for the supremely talented New Jersey artist Kristi Nazzaro aka @soul_positive on IG. Kristi uses her 2 typewriters as integral instruments in creating her art and her musings and contacted me a little over a month ago to give a clean and service to her aqua colored Grant 737 ultra portable typewriter. Not only was I able to restore it to its former glory I was also able to do so while preserving the bits of character that Kristi added to it herself. 3 more client machines to go until I am 100% refocused on restocking the typewriter section of IronFoxTypewriters.com (and Etsy).
