It’s the eyes. One look at those sincere, earnest eyes and nobody would believe that man did anything wrong in his entire life. He’s the perfect example of a knight if he did do something wrong it was obviously not his fault. Meanwhile he’s running around committing more treason before breakfast than half the criminals in the kingdom just cause Merlin asked.
the thing about lancelot is that he IS first and foremost merlin's knight. he's mr. "your secret's safe with me." mr. "oh merlin you need to get to the cup of life? awesome i'm coming with you." mr. "i made a vow to gwen to keep arthur safe but merlin got hit by the dorocha so i am immediately going to abandon both the mission and my vow in order to look after him for however long he needs me. obviously" and it's really funny because nobody expects it from him. the difference between him and gwaine (also merlin's knight) is that he's quiet about it so nobody ever fucking suspects him. if arthur ever gave him an order he'd be like yeah sure alright and do it BUT if merlin pulled him aside to ask him if he would go against the order to cover for him saving the day (as usual) lancelot would be like "Say No More <3" and kronk wrong lever arthur into a pit on purpose. and then he would throw himself into the pit as well like "oh my god sire i am SO SORRY </333 i must've pulled the wrong lever or the rigging was messed up or something </333333 please my lord you have my utmost apologies and you can execute me for my foolishness if you want :((((" and arthur would take one look at his sad little face and be like No lancelot it's not your fault.....You are The Best knight i have and i trust you Completely....that lever must've been Tampered with...with Sorcery.... and merlin saves the day in the background and then he and lancelot go out drinking that night to celebrate

“Nico Di Angelo is a token gay! His coming out scene sucked!” babes I’m BEGGING you to remember 2013 gay characters were not allowed in children’s media.
Lemme say that again: In 2013, it was expected that gay characters would be censored in children’s mass media.
Remember Korra? How she and Asami had to settle for ambiguous handholding rather than a kiss? That was fully a year after House of Hades came out. Nickelodeon said No Gays, the Children™ can’t handle that. Too risky. And people said man that stinks, but that’s how these things go in 2014 America.
Gay marriage was literally still illegal in the vast majority of US states. As of October 8th, 2013 (House of Hades release date) Gay Marriage was only a thing in thirteen fucking states. California had only legalized it that year.
Gay people were still very much on the fringes of society. It was an acceptable political position on both sides of the aisle to be against the existence and equal rights of gay people.
Nico was legitimately a landmark character in queer representation. To my knowledge, there wasn’t before an openly gay main character in a bestselling ya/middle grade fantasy fiction series. It simply was not a thing. They didn’t exist. They weren’t allowed to exist.
I remember people crying. Finally. It was a watershed moment. Kids all across the world finally got someone who represented them. It was such a big fucking deal. And it was controversial!!! Not for the reasons it is today, but because people thought gay kids having representation was inappropriate.
Is Nico’s coming out a great scene? No, these days it leaves a lot to be desired. It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination and I’m sure Rick wishes he could change it. But the fact that’s the case is a wonderful reflection of how far we’ve come.
All of your gay heroes in children’s media have Nico Di Angelo to thank. It was important, and good. It deserves to be celebrated, even if we’ve progressed past it since.

I’m rewatching Merlin again and I just love how Lancelot seems sensible but is actually bat shit insane.
He’s got his morals, obviously, but he’s also just as chaotic as Gwaine and Merlin in his own way.
Like, a day after meeting Merlin he committed identity fraud.
Then he found out Merlin had magic and immediately decided keeping it secret would be more fun than turning him over, which would’ve gotten him the knighthood that he’d been dreaming of his entire life. Really love that he’s not a class traitor there.
Then he rode off into the sunset, cape billowing like a dramatic ass theatre kid turned DnD player with a leaf blower (talking from experience on that one)
Then he joined a fight club
Was fully prepared to sacrifice himself for Gwen with a hero’s death
Then left for some personal growth, which was fair enough but I’m kinda disappointed we didn’t get to see more of his character development. That’s what headcanons and fics are for though.
But then in Camelot, after getting his knighthood, he constantly encouraged Merlin to use his magic - with his “I’m sure a man of your talents can think of something” like they weren’t in a busy hallway where anyone could’ve seen - and casually fell in love with seeing magic used freely. The look in his eyes whenever he sees Merlin using magic is just soft, I don’t know how else to explain it. (Take that in whatever context you want it, I’m a sucker for Mercelot but romantic or platonic doesn’t matter to me.)
And THEN! Merlin survived the Dorocha and he tried to prank the king, someone secretly but not so secretly in love with Merlin, with his “Bad news, he survived.” Thing.
There’s definitely more, but I just love how chaotic Lance is and how much he got away with because his reputation as the noblest knight gave him a lot of freedom to do dumb stuff and then bat his eyes all pretty to get out of trouble.

I have seen quite a bit of people talking about how during the year between season 3 and 4, Lancelot was likely helping Merlin with his magically shenanigans but more often then not it’s portrayed as like this
Tumblr media
Like everyone forgets Lancelot straight up committed identity fraud because Merlin batted his eyes at him??? Lancelot casually and subtly encourages Merlin to do magic (aka commit treason) in the middle of the crowded hallways?? Yes Lancelot was probably helping as much as Merlin let him but it was probably more like:
Tumblr media
Poor Gaius has to deal with his disaster nephew/son/ward AND his disaster nephew/son/ward’s disaster treason buddy/best friend/boyfriend with full knowledge of what they are up to and just barley managing to avoid even more chaos. The real reason the writers never let Gwaine figure out Merlin’s magic is he’d be just as much an enabler as Lancelot, and more than willing to cause more chaos.

established mercelot where they slept together on the first night is always smthn ill treasure bcuz ofc they'd look at each other and think "my heart has known you longer than my eyes have seen you. it's you. it will always be you." thats just how they are
but there is also so much lovely potential in them falling so slowly over time that when it finally hits them its like being flung off a cliff. the warmth in their gut boils over and escapes the pot to tell them this has been brewing since long before they even considered being more than friends.
maybe one day after all the losses and wins and saving kingdoms countless times and talking to dragons and fulfilling destiny they'd be having an uneventful workday in the castle, so uneventful they'd have time to just relax, and when they relax they always look for each other and when they do perhaps they would find a quiet corner in the castle to just talk and hide from arthur as they snicker like mischevious kids
and then
they meet eyes over silence
or when merlin says a sassy remark
or when lancelot can't help but compliment him
the noise of the world and even merlin's magic calms down, and in true friends-to-lovers slowburn fashion, they realize, "it's always been you. why didnt i see it before? it will always be you."

I know we all joke about Sir Percival’s size but have you seen Sir Leon?
Tumblr media
He’s towering over Arthur even when bending down
Here: a different angle
Tumblr media
BTS photo: He’s the same height as Percival
Tumblr media
Look at Arthur’s first knight. A mountain of a man with curly hair, broad shoulders, a beard and morals
Tumblr media
Praise the knight commander we all chant in unison

I feel for sir Leon. Sir Leon probably had respectable, noble friends. From respectable, noble backgrounds that probably did respectable, noble things. He was doing well, climbing the ranks of the knights, close to the prince in a respectable position. Only for Morgana to come along and steal the crown and now Arthur has saddled him with 3 feral commoners and a feral nobleman pretending to be a commoner, plus Merlin who’s literally the worst of them all. Like sure he grew up with Gwen and Elyan and was therefore use to it but really.

Note
I think Sir Leon lives in a perpetual state of “not my monkeys not my circus” but then realises “oh shit, those are my monkeys” whenever the knights are in a quest
re: gwaine sticking his hand into a live beehive to pilfer some honey and merlin’s sneaking off to do whatever it is that he does
Absolutely.

What’s worse is I found the fic again. Already bookmarked and I just didn’t realize it was the same one cause I could only remember the ending
When you lose a fic and don’t remember much except the pairing, it was really good and like one or two lines at the end. This is the feeling I assume separated lovers feel. Where did you go? Why did you leave me? Will you ever return to me?
