cognitive dissonance & narcissism: psychology of high school musical 2

In High School Musical 2, the drama isn’t just about songs and summer jobs but about growing up and figuring out who you are when things start to change. Troy starts wanting to have the perfect summer with Gabriella and his friends, but things get complicated once Sharpay gets involved. When Troy sees Gabriella hanging out with Ryan, he gets insecure, not because he doesn’t trust her, but because he knows things between them aren’t feeling solid anymore.
Instead of opening up, Troy shuts down. He keeps trying to do what he thinks is the “right” thing for his future: singing with Sharpay, impressing college scouts, and taking on fancy opportunities. But in doing all that, he slowly starts losing what actually matters to him: his friends, his relationship, and himself. This is something called cognitive dissonance; when your actions don’t match your values, it makes you feel uncomfortable or conflicted. Troy keeps making promises to Gabriella; he really does want to keep them, but life gets in the way, and he avoids the hard conversations until it’s too late.
At the same time, Sharpay is doing what Sharpay does best (being dramatic and manipulative). But there’s more to it than that. She actually shows signs of narcissism, when someone has an inflated sense of self-importance and little to no empathy for others. She literally calls her classmates “dishwashers,” as if she’s better than everyone just because her parents are rich. She doesn’t see that if it weren’t for her privilege, she’d be working just like everyone else. And when her brother Ryan finally stands up to her, it’s clear she’s never even considered how her actions affect the people around her.
Gabriella sees all of this. Gabriella doesn’t want to play games or chase clout. She wants honesty, and she wants to be with someone who knows who they are and what they stand for.
In the end, Troy realizes what he’s risking and decides to stop following someone else’s version of success. He chooses his friends, his passions, and Gabriella. Not because the opportunities weren’t cool, but because they weren’t worth losing himself. You can’t grow into the person you’re meant to be if you’re too busy trying to become who everyone else wants you to be.
Little problems can turn into big ones when we don’t talk about them, and it's important to know what really matters to you before someone else decides for you. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is say, “This is how I feel,” even if it’s hard. That’s what saves Troy and what makes High School Musical 2 so much deeper than it seems.
Done with part 2 and now I want to rewatch the movie again. All I've been doing this summer is writing stupid scholarships and watching Love Island (along with the Virgin Suicides for like the millionth time). Girlrotting day 3 is starting now

astroworld 2021 and the dangers of mob mentality

Crowd mentality, or mob mentality, is a psychological phenomenon in which group members adopt similar behaviors, beliefs, or emotions, often deviating from their individual tendencies. Many corresponding crowd theories can be compared to the devastating incident at Travis Scott's Astroworld festival.
The contagion theory proposes that behaviors, emotions, and ideas can spread rapidly and uncontrollably through a group, much like a disease. A crowd or group setting can be influenced by others, leading to a collective state of heightened emotion or action, sometimes deviating from their normal behavior. When we see people tearing down the fences or breaking through security checks, with people already being injured and trampled at 9AM, you can clearly see that mob mentality is on full display. A widespread panic manifests itself in selfishness, stepping on and pushing others. This state of mind might otherwise be uncharacteristic of them.
Travis Scott is well aware of this mob mentality; he feeds off it and encourages the chaos that comes with it. He weaponizes his power and influence over his teen fans, taking advantage of the parasocial relationship that many feel with Travis (in my opinion). It was a complete manipulation of their trust. He encourages violence towards security and officers. He encourages his fans to put themselves in potentially dangerous situations. He did nothing but encourage the crowd to keep pushing, which ultimately led to the devastating loss of many lives. Of course, I believe Live Nation is 100% to blame in this situation, but Travis Scott and the crowd should be held accountable too.
There's a level of social influence and conformity built around Travis Scott's fans, in which everybody is influenced by the behaviors and opinions of others. Travis Scott has built his live performances around "raging," where fans become hectic and out of control. It encourages others to give in to this chaos and potentially put the lives of others in danger.
In large crowds, individuals may experience a loss of self-awareness, potentially leading to impulsive and uninhibited behavior. People from SZA's set had come in through the left side entrance, hoping to catch Scott's performance, and had unintentionally packed the existing crowd into the right side barricades (from what I'm aware of). By wanting to be as close to Scott as possible, fans crushed the crowd into the barricade, though it's unlikely this was done intentionally.
Emotional contagion is when emotions can spread rapidly through a crowd and create a shared emotional state that influences individual actions. As Scott's performance began, a panic rapidly spread through the crowd as they realized they were being pushed and swayed uncontrollably. Screams and cries for help overwhelm the excitement that was previously felt. It directly contrasted the right side of the stage set-up, where people had no clue of the growing panic.
Social Proof, or looking to others for validation and guidance in uncertain situations, may lead to adopting popular choices or behaviors. Scott had full ability to control the performance, whether that have been stopping the show altogether or informing the crowds to keep calm. He had the power and influence to keep his fans from trampling among one another, and yet he continued his performance. It's Live Nations blatant ignorance and failure to guide the situation that ended in the injuries and deaths of so many.
Whilst mob mentality can be harmless, it often leads to negative consequences. Irrational decision-making and violence led to the devastation that night. Recognizing the factors that contribute to mob mentality can help organizations minimize negative effects and promote responsible behavior.
It's hard to hold one person accountable for all the things that happened that night. It wasn't entirely Travis Scott's fault, but the organizers for this event. After watching the documentary, my heart was broken for all the trauma these people suffered. My prayers go out to the victims families, because they were the ones who were most affected by all of this (not Travis).

wounded ego & pride: psychology of high school musical 2

Now, you could argue that Sharpay was right in the first film and that she was done completely dirty. In this film, it's challenging to make that case. From how she acts in the first film (which I will eventually analyze), we can see that she ties her security to the school musical. When her "musical throne" is threatened, she doesn't care to hurt people to keep it.
Sharpay ultimately sees Troy as a status symbol. To her, he's an accessory to parade around the dinner table, not a person. Much like eyeshadow would accentuate the eyes, he is meant to accentuate her features. He is intended to put her on a pedestal, to hold her up, and validate her "sharpayness".
To her, Troy is a conquest that results in him on her arm. Because Troy is the most popular, captain of the basketball team, and star singer, Sharpay sees Troy as the best of the best. Initially, she reaffirms that they deserve each other because he is the best. (There are strong comparisons between Sharpay-Gaston or Troy-Belle, but that doesn't mean Gabriella-Beast, because let's be real.)
"Troy is the best, and I deserve only the best". Sharpay clarifies from the beginning that she’s planning to steal Troy from Gabriella. She doesn't care about who she hurts in the process, because what matters is that she will get what she wants. It's all about Sharpay, but this comes from her wounded ego. She can appear sweet and kind to Troy, but it doesn't stem from worry for his future or himself.
She cares about how it'll benefit herself, in a very transactional way (if I do this for you, then you do this for me). In a way, she does want to help Troy, but she's simultaneously using him. It's very "nice guy syndrome" esque, but instead of an incel, it's Sharpay. She does all these wonderful things for Troy, but only so he feels obligated to give her what she wants.
It's manipulative in that Troy now feels he has to do what she says, because she's gone through the troubles of supporting him. The issue with Troy is that he is constantly trying to draw boundaries with Sharpay (which she completely writes off). He feels he would have to be a complete jerk to put his foot down, and Sharpay uses this hesitation to her advantage.
It's what often happens when someone love-bombs you, they push and manipulate for you to do what they want. She tries to make their duet in the talent show attractive to benefit his future. She drops subtle hints about them becoming a "thing" along the way.
This is also when Ryan starts coming into his own. In the first movie, he supported Sharpay in everything she did. He was happy being second in her spotlight, but now he wants more for himself. Anytime he attempts to prioritize him over her, she burns the chances of it happening.
I'm making a 2nd part because this was way longer than I intended. Also, I want to add how much I love Sharpay but if I ever met her in real life I would DESPISE her lol.

Psychology of Coriolanus Snow

Coriolanus Snow is born into a wealthy family that falls into deep poverty after the rebellion. He loves his grandmother and cousin and is motivated to provide for his family. He wants to win the Plinth prize to gain the comfort and security he had lost in the rebellion. He's motivated to provide for his family, but also motivated by his own self-interest. He takes a great interest in Lucy Gray, who reflects a part of himself that he hides. Poor, starving, struggling, but she's also a kindred spirit. We see this divide between himself, between compassion and self-interest.
His main flaw is that he is an opportunist, and we see this especially with the start of the Hunger Games. Whilst Sejanus argues the immorality of the Hunger Games, Coriolanus sees this as a means to expand the games. He sees this as an opportunity for the audience to care about the tributes, not for their benefit, but for his own. He sees this as a chance to win the Plinth prize, make the games more successful, and stand out as someone who has the skills to control the districts.
At the start, it's about HIS self-interests and HIS motives, but he begins to risk his own life for Lucy Gray. He puts his life in danger by giving her the poison, and he also develops an obsession with Lucy Gray. He loves her as someone who loves a trophy, something to possess and control. The world he lives in is cruel; people are starving, killing each other for entertainment, but he doesn't see it as something that needs to be changed. He views it as, How can I protect the public? How can I rule and control to keep people safe?
Of course, he doesn't really want to protect the districts. It's a defense tactic to keep that comfort and security he craves. His idea of protecting the public is installing fear of power into the minds of the people, massive industrial power (trains, factories, etc), and the continuation of the Hunger Games to instill fear and emotional investment. The emotional investment of the Hunger Games is important because it distracts from the corrupt government that is in place. Coriolanus recognizes and acknowledges that he feels horrified for taking a human life (when he beats the boy with a club in the arena). Instead of viewing this murder as self-defense, he views it as being powerful.
In the second half of the movie, he has already committed several wrongful crimes. Small scraps of humanity still seep through, like remorse or guilt for what he has done. He has the opportunity to choose to acknowledge that what he is doing is wrong, and that he can choose to make things right. Coriolanus continues to pretend to Lucy Gray, although his humanity has slowly been slipping away from him. Lucy Gray mirrors this, as she still clings to her innocence and morality after the Hunger Games. She makes the decision that she wants to be good, that all of those horrific experiences that she went through don't define her as a person.
Both Lucy Gray and Tigris believe in the goodness of humanity and represent the compassion that Corio still holds within himself. The one he chooses to listen to and connect with the most is Dr. Gaul. She is the pinnacle of success and raw power in his eyes. She holds the control that he wants for himself, and that's why he really responds to the "advice" that she gives him.
The real tragedy of Coriolanus Snow is that he truly had the brains and talent to revolutionize the world he lived in. Instead, he conformed himself to the Capitol. Katniss directly mirrors Snow, someone who grew up in hardship but sought to change the society she lived in.
I'm surprised if you read all this damn
