Hey i wanted to reach out because i just read ur post about checkmate and realized that i could in fact reach out. You were joking, i know, but ur defo notable to me. Checkmate was genuinely a significant influence to me wrt vibe and in terms of audio aesthetic when i decided to make a short film in my spare time for a film contest during my senior year of college when i was 21-22. That project was a particularly big deal to me and to my development because i had not, up to that point, ever drummed up the courage or self assurance to meaningfully pursue animation, filmmaking, or art in general (i was not at an art college and my degree is in english). Im 26 now and on the precipice of a year long comics project that involves a lot of travel, all funded by a grant i managed to get in part due to that film contest/animation stuff being on my resume. In a roundabout way u and phemiec are ppl worth thanking for that. So thank you and good luck cus youre brilliant and i rlly wanna see what u make.
Sorry it took me a minute to respond to this, I wrote and rewrote my response like 5 times trying to figure out how to properly express myself. Sorry this is so long I'm genuinely so bad at being brief in my writing haha
First of all I wanna say genuinely thank you for sending this, it means so so so much to me to hear, especially now when the animation job market sucks, my freelance is drying up and I've had a lot of ummmm let's say artistic self-doubt lol..
I've been thinking a lot lately about what I make art for, and as more time goes on, I think I just wanna make things that make me excited to work, and hopefully catalyze others to make art as well. Huge congrats on your upcoming project and even bigger kudos for getting there on your own through inspiration and sheer love of the game. Excited to see what you make as well :)) also the fact that it was grant funded and you got to travel for it is absolutely the coolest shit i've ever heard of!
Checkmate as a film is kind of a funny story to me; I'd spent the majority of that first school year working on a student film I kind of hated lol... it was basic but achievable & my story prof at the time seemed to like the simple structure of it (for lack of a better term, it was very "student film"). Unfortunately I love overly complicated and kind of confusing and anime-ish bullshit so this was very boring to me.
About 3 months out from deadline we had a guest lecture from Eosong Lee about his short My Moon and even though his lecture was mostly about like, After Effects tricks, I was possessed with this like intense need to make something more dramatic and symbolic and serious, with all the things I loved like... idk sad action magical girls killing kings. or something. I thumbnailed Checkmate in a weekend and reached out to PhemieC about music not long after.
It's a rough project, I have a lot of thoughts/notes about the animation & clarity but I have a lot of love for it being something made purely on passion and sleep deprivation.
Um anyway tldr: thanks, it really really means a lot to me! all i ever hope to do is making something good enough it inspires someone else to make their own cool art. Congrats again, good luck and I wish you a fulfilling & successful comic!!

sometimes you're 20 and you commission your favorite homestuck fan musician to write a song for your animation school first year film bc ur burnt out already and its the only thing that'll get you to work on your film and then suddenly you're 27 and they announce homestuck the animated series and you're like kind of baffled and also a little offended no one emailed your unemployed and not at all notable ass to tell you this was happening because you do this shit professionally now until you realize its being executive produced the reason you didn't go to SVA so you sit down and decide to reanimate your first year film & also finally make that The God's Must Be Lying but TLT music video. or something.
#posts you cant hold me to#im not reanimating checkmate until i finish [redacted] and [redacted] and [redacted] first so like. maybe next year.#i am filled with an energy very few things can catalyze in me#YES IM GONNA FINISH THE GRAPHIC NOVEL PITCH FIRST#typing this up and realizing i think i write/type/think this way bc. of homestuck. anyway

alien stage hits the same part of my brain that kagepro did in 2012. one thing teens love is putting color coded characters in unrequited love sacrificial death situations. And also they sing.
#alien stage hits but very much in a. this feels like if a vocaloid series got an animation budget#<- complimentary to be clear

every now and again I think of this one NITW tattoo I was commissed to design a few years back, when I definitely did not know the rules for tattoo colors/lines/general practice and I just really hope that person found a competent tattoo artist who was able to translate my bright digital colors into something good.... ○| ̄|_
#head in my hands. forgive me [tattoo commissioner] for i did not know ....#it was a cool illustration but defunitely not optimized for skin. which idk i definitely had no sense of that till i got like 3 tattoos..#anyway commissioner if ur out there.. i cant find our communication but i can find ur reddit posts lol i hope ur well.#*definitely. typo i cant be bothered to retype all that to correct. anyway

WIP Dragon age Veilguard fan animatic - "A Crows Ball"

Would I utilize my talented animation connections so I could see my OC dance?
Yes. Yes I Would. More info after the jump.
I thought 2025 would be a great year to make my brainrot everyone else’s problem so here are some wip roughs. I'm also looking for more animators/char layout/compositors who can do anime/anime adjacent styles. Studio experience preferred. The vibe is very much Cinderella x Sailormoon. It's probably not going to be too much animation, and I'm planning on mixing it with some 2d still illustrations.
Animation credits: First wide shot: catren.tvpp (insta) Second mid shot: Ikea Hotdog Rough animatic: isawitch (insta)
#one thing about me is i am always storyboarding#the running animatic section is mine :)#dragon age#rookanis#<- knows nothing about dragon age lol

I think some of the best advice I ever got at my brief time at art school was to only give artists/peers/classmates critique on personal art if they ask for it first. You can give unsolicited crit, no ones stopping you, but you absolutely cannot expect unsolicited crit to always be recieved well, if at all.
(This does not apply to like your professor, or boss/client at a professional job- they are in fact allowed to give crit bc it is their job and someone's getting paid in this scenario)
#which is to say if ur an aspiring storyboard artist for the love of god do not go comment your crit on professional's linkedin posts#<- recent experience. stop that#which. i guess related/unrelated. is why i think kiana is one of the most patient people on the internet#<- i do not know kiana personally at all
