A faint, wistful curve pulled at Kisame’s mouth. “I keep slipping up and flirting with you. Calling you ‘cute’ and ‘sexy’ and ‘hot.’”
Itachi pressed his lips together, toes stirring the water. He could feel Kisame’s nearness beneath the surface; if he stretched his legs, he’d make contact. “I mean…” He extended a foot until it brushed Kisame’s thigh. “I don’t mind it.”

“How about this?” Mikoto interjected. “Why don’t you two hang out under the pergola out back?” She suggested and turned her attention fully to Izumi. “We just had some work done on the backyard since you’ve seen it last and have this beautiful set up out back. Couches, a fire pit, string lights. It’s been really nice especially as it gets warmer outside.”
Itachi caught sight of Sasuke’s fingers curling around the doorframe to the kitchen and quickly retreating. “What about the dishes?”
“We can worry about them later but while Izumi and Hazuki are still here let’s give them our full attention, shall we?”
Sasuke didn’t need to be told twice. He scraped his chair back, gathered a few plates like a formality, and disappeared into the kitchen. Moments later, his footsteps echoed up the stairs.
Itachi watched the space he left behind. Part of him wanted to follow. The other part didn’t know what he’d say once he got there.
Behind him, the conversation shifted easily — as if it had only been waiting for the youngest to leave. Hazuki, Mikoto, and Fugaku would probably linger at the table, talking about current events, old colleagues, stories from when Hazuki’s husband was still alive. The kind of talk that belonged to people with a past, not just a future.
Itachi didn’t usually say much during these exchanges. Still, he liked to listen. He felt old enough now to hear about the choices that shaped them – the wrong turns, the resilience, the things that were only ever mentioned in passing. He wanted to know how they got from who they were to who they are.
But he and Izumi had been quietly grouped together – ushered out, not maliciously, but with a kind of warm dismissal. Their stories could wait. They were still just starting.
Izumi didn’t seem to mind. She nodded toward the patio doors, all ease and expectation, like she was ready for the next scene.
Itachi hesitated, just for a moment. A quiet ache pulled at him – the feeling of being left out of a room you weren’t quite ready to leave.
“So, how’ve you been?” Izumi asked once they were seated under the pergola. “It’s been literally forever since I’ve seen you like, oh my goodness, you’re so much taller than me now! Help!” She cried, throwing her head back in laughter and covering her mouth.
She immediately kicked off her sandals and threw herself onto the sectional, sitting cross legged like she’d lived there all her life.
Conversely, Itachi, who had actually lived here for most of his, took a deep breath and lowered himself down slowly, bracing his hands on firmly on his knees as if to ground himself in the moment.

(unblurred version coming soon)
Mikoto, of course, knew this about her eldest son too. She merely ruffled her youngest son’s hair when he crinkled his nose at the taste of her drink.
“It’s just coconut milk, Sasuke.” She smiled.
“It’s gross.” He grimaced and pried himself out of her grasp to get himself something to wash it down with.
Fugaku, similarly, was not impressed. “Well, you’re your mother’s child, alright.”
“Want some, honey?” Mikoto teased with a swish of her drink, now mostly ice cubes and a few stray popping bubbles.
Fugaku didn’t try to hide his distain and gently pushed the drink back in Mikoto’s direction.
“What does that make me?” Sasuke asked him. “I’m mom’s child too!”
“You inherited your mother’s love of tomatoes.” He said without missing a beat. “You oughta call those salads of yours ‘salsas’ for as much tomatoes as you put in them.”
Tomatoes – harmless.
Sugary drinks? The very destruction of any self-respecting man’s image though soda was perfectly fine.

He was aware that their hips were grinding and gyrating against each other seeking relief.
He was aware that another man’s tongue was shoved down his throat, mapping every cavity filled molar and bicuspid as they “sucked face.”
He was also aware that Kisame was sitting up and saying something to him, and shifting to kneel before him on the floor while Itachi’s mind raced to process what was being asked of him.
He was acutely aware that, if his father knew that another man was spreading his legs and unzipping his jeans, he would not have a father or a home anymore.
And yet.
Somehow.
None of that seemed to matter in that moment.

Things Real People Do in Dialogue (For Your Next Story)
Okay, let’s be real—dialogue can make or break a scene. You want your characters to sound natural, like actual humans talking, not robots reading a script. So, how do you write dialogue that feels real without it turning into a mess of awkward pauses and “ums”? Here’s a little cheat sheet of what real people actually do when they talk (and you can totally steal these for your next story):
1. People Interrupt Each Other All the Time In real conversations, nobody waits for the perfect moment to speak. We interrupt, cut each other off, and finish each other's sentences. Throw in some overlaps or interruptions in your dialogue to make it feel more dynamic and less like a rehearsed play.
2. They Don’t Always Say What They Mean Real people are masters of dodging. They’ll say one thing but mean something totally different (hello, passive-aggressive banter). Or they’ll just avoid the question entirely. Let your characters be vague, sarcastic, or just plain evasive sometimes—it makes their conversations feel more layered.
3. People Trail Off... We don’t always finish our sentences. Sometimes we just... stop talking because we assume the other person gets what we’re trying to say. Use that in your dialogue! Let a sentence trail off into nothing. It adds realism and shows the comfort (or awkwardness) between characters.
4. Repeating Words Is Normal In real life, people repeat words when they’re excited, nervous, or trying to make a point. It’s not a sign of bad writing—it’s how we talk. Let your characters get a little repetitive now and then. It adds a rhythm to their speech that feels more genuine.
5. Fillers Are Your Friends People say "um," "uh," "like," "you know," all the time. Not every character needs to sound polished or poetic. Sprinkle in some filler words where it makes sense, especially if the character is nervous or thinking on their feet.
6. Not Everyone Speaks in Complete Sentences Sometimes, people just throw out fragments instead of complete sentences, especially when emotions are high. Short, choppy dialogue can convey tension or excitement. Instead of saying “I really think we need to talk about this,” try “We need to talk. Now.”
7. Body Language Is Part of the Conversation Real people don’t just communicate with words; they use facial expressions, gestures, and body language. When your characters are talking, think about what they’re doing—are they fidgeting? Smiling? Crossing their arms? Those little actions can add a lot of subtext to the dialogue without needing extra words.
8. Awkward Silences Are Golden People don’t talk non-stop. Sometimes, they stop mid-conversation to think, or because things just got weird. Don’t be afraid to add a beat of awkward silence, a long pause, or a meaningful look between characters. It can say more than words.
9. People Talk Over Themselves When They're Nervous When we’re anxious, we tend to talk too fast, go back to rephrase what we just said, or add unnecessary details. If your character’s nervous, let them ramble a bit or correct themselves. It’s a great way to show their internal state through dialogue.
10. Inside Jokes and Shared History Real people have history. Sometimes they reference something that happened off-page, or they share an inside joke only they get. This makes your dialogue feel lived-in and shows that your characters have a life beyond the scene. Throw in a callback to something earlier, or a joke only two characters understand.
11. No One Explains Everything People leave stuff out. We assume the person we’re talking to knows what we’re talking about, so we skip over background details. Instead of having your character explain everything for the reader’s benefit, let some things go unsaid. It’ll feel more natural—and trust your reader to keep up!
12. Characters Have Different Voices Real people don’t all talk the same way. Your characters shouldn’t either! Pay attention to their unique quirks—does one character use slang? Does another speak more formally? Maybe someone’s always cutting people off while another is super polite. Give them different voices and patterns of speech so their dialogue feels authentic to them.
13. People Change the Subject In real life, conversations don’t always stay on track. People get sidetracked, jump to random topics, or avoid certain subjects altogether. If your characters are uncomfortable or trying to dodge a question, let them awkwardly change the subject or ramble to fill the space.
14. Reactions Aren’t Always Immediate People don’t always respond right away. They pause, they think, they hesitate. Sometimes they don’t know what to say, and that delay can speak volumes. Give your characters a moment to process before they respond—it’ll make the conversation feel more natural.
Important note: Please don’t use all of these tips in one dialogue at once.

I got attacked by my dog while writing chapter 54 of Things Better Left Unsaid and still finished it with teeth marks where there shouldn't be teeth marks
I love it when people take fic writing seriously. I love when it's not 'Here's this dumb thing I wrote' and instead it's 'Here's this thing I put blood, sweat and tears into. Here's this thing I slaved away at, trying new writing techniques and editing over and over. Here's this dialogue that kept me awake at night. Here's this beautiful turn of phrase I thought up. Here's this thing that I wrote with vulnerability and heart, and I am proud to share it with you.'

current fan creation landscape is kinda like if you went to a party with a homemade cake and everyone takes a slice and silently thumbs up at you with no attempt to start a conversation except for occasionally some guy sits in the corner with a tape recorder critiquing the cake as though he was a restaurant critic and another guy is handing the cake to an uber driver like "yeah i need you to find a restaurant that makes cake like this so i can have more of it" and the only person that's talked to you in 30 minutes is a very sweet little guy who was like "hey i liked your cake" and then ran away apologizing for bothering you the moment you said thank you.

Personally I really like MPA as a diagnosis for him just because it's autoimmune, and people with extensive histories of trauma are at great risk of developing one or more autoimmune conditions. I've often said he hated himself so much that his body eventually got the memo.
I guess whatever disease we diagnose him with, one thing that remains unchanged is how much he hated himself for this, to the extent of denying himself the most basic comfort of death, which would be so much easier in the wake of the things he'd done and had been through.
To me, his illness comes across as a manifestation of his guilt and pain that was irreversible, because he could not be redeemed by anything in this lifetime. So, what he felt and endured took form of a physical agony that would eventually kill him.
But he also fought against it, not because he wanted to live or was attached to the idea of living, but because he wanted to be punished every sleeping and waking moments for the unforgivable things he'd done. It is kind of poetic and also simultaneously devastating because it adds to the substantial layers of tragedies that pile up on him.

Listen— listen — Dilf Itachi! In his late 30s. He has his stress lines deepened, voice a little heavier, he’s not 21 anymore of course. He’s also gotten laid back, he realizes that the world wouldn’t end if he doesn’t keep it over his shoulders.
Goes to jogging with songs on, probably throws Yacht parties for his brother and any achievements of his family. Doting uncle, pathetically single & has probably given away the idea of love. He was too busy making the name for the existing Uchiha empire in his prime, now he thinks he’d probably die alone.
He’s only gotten sexier though, would actually let loose and do a hook-up or two. Has realized he’s especially good at aftercare.
Dilf Itachi in his late thirties meeting the reader who’s also in her early thirties. Two mentally healed individuals in a relationship >>> 😭😭😂

Still so salty over the fact that neither Kishimoto nor Studio Pierrot showed as Itachi with his hair down
Not the hair down Itachi, but this shirtless Itachi for the Chinese game has bewitched me body and soul. Whoever is horny for him on that game team, may continue to bless us with these delicacies in the future as well. Though Kishimoto not giving us a shirtless Itachi or Itachi with his hair down would always make me salty too.

Thinking about chapter #353, just a little before Sasuke vs Itachi happens, and how Itachi acts. It might not be anything special, but I do find it sad.
Kisame fought Rōshi and took him down. And after Itachi goes "You need to handle the elderly with care" Kisame kind of mocks him.

Was he being genuine and was the remark because Itachi allowed himself to be a little bit himself in Kisame's presence? Other than just participating in the Akatsuki's extracting the tailed beasts from their jinchuriki rituals Itachi isn't shown to do much for them. He isn't evil. He does feel empathy. But knowing him, he could be sarcastic as well. But it doesn't look like he's being sarcastic because he has no purpose of doing so.
Anyway.

They leave and walk for a little bit.

Then Kisame says he's a little tired. It's probably a general statement because he's talking about the hunts over all. But Kisame and Itachi haven't really done anything else other than capturing the Four Tails. Still, they take a break from walking.

Kisame's holding a dying man on his shoulders after battling him and complaining about how hard it was to defeat him. And he still stands. Guess who needs to sit down because the boy is so tired?

Him. (so pretty though).
Did Kisame stop because he himself was tired or did he just take a break because it's very close to Itachi's death, and he wouldn't be in a good condition right now. Who knew how much medicines he took so he could stand and accompany Kisame on their mission? Kisame offered to fight Rōshi because Itachi was already so weak and close to dying. He wouldn't have survived the battle against a jinchuriki and he needed to "preserve" himself to die at his brother's hands.
When we see him looking calm on the surface there's so much going on inside of him. The way he talks Kisame out of capturing Naruto or even thinking about it because he's hoping that day would never come. He learns about Sasuke killing Orochimaru after this. Did he ever panic that he couldn't really do it anymore and he literally prayed to some gods that Sasuke came and killed him because pain was too intense at times? What did he really look like when he was weak, vulnerable, and human? How did he ever hide all this from Kisame because I don't think Kisame ever knew what the whole deal with Itachi was. I need answers.
