how to fix harry potter?
youtube
just watched this video on youtube and frankly, i quite like it!!
the author attempted to fix major plotholes in harry potter (focused on philosopher's stone) and provided some interesting insights into how hogwarts could work in regards to other wizarding schools in the uk (private vs public, stigma around the latter, hogwarts being the "posh" school and i'm eating this up.

I’ve personally assumed Sirius was largely talking out his ass at this point, because the death eater we 100% do know Snape is involved with by Goblet of Fire is Lucius Malfoy and the proto-death eater teenage Snape is accused of being too close with in Deathly Hallows is Mulciber, but Sirius doesn’t mention either of them, even though he runs his mouth calling Snape Malfoy’s lapdog right in the next book and just spent 12 years in the same jail as Mulciber lmao. But, in terms of practical timeline-salvaging?  Since the adult Lestranges took the still-teenage Barty Jr. out torturing with them, it’s plausible that they had a habit of “mentoring” younger death eaters — especially those from good families, like the notably pure-blooded Crouches or, maybe, Bellatrix’s mother’s family, the Rosiers. The Wilkeses didn’t make the Sacred 28 list and Bellatrix is rather fanatical in her blood purity thing, so it’s probably Evan Rosier who has ties to the Lestranges — Sirius seems to be playing six degrees of separation to link Snape to them, but hey, they’re awful people (whom the author needs to mention and set up as such) and if the kids think they were Snape’s old friends they won’t wonder if Sirius is related to them! (Could also be Avery who was Bellatrix’s protégé I guess, but that seems unlikely— the death eater Avery we see doesn’t have anything in common with the Lestranges beyond working for Voldemort. It’s almost certainly not Snape himself — he’s a halfblood whom Bellatrix doesn’t like, trust, or know particularly well and she’s upset that Narcissa seems to like and trust him.)
Fandom-wise, I think usually Mulciber, Avery, and Wilkes are presented as Snape’s classmates/Slytherin friends, with Rosier being either younger (and a closer friend of Barty Jr or Regulus) or a bit older (and more of a mentor), and then Rosier typically is depicted as a cousin to the Black sisters on their mother’s side.
thank you so much anon! you've managed to lay it out so clearly for me haha. i often came across fics when bellatrix and rodolphus were aged down, which is an artistic choice and absolutely valid, but hence my curiosity to find a "canonical" explanation for the discrepancy :)

If your reason for not shipping Ron and Hermione is because of all their bickering... you have a child's grasp of their characters.
Ron has five brothers and a little sister. You have to be quick witted to keep up with the amount of friendly fire going on inside that house. The loudest gets heard. He's always ready for a fight.
Hermione secretly judges people by their ability to keep up with her intellectually. Condescension is a reflex. It pushes people away before they can actually match her (because god forbid she lose).
Unstoppable force meets immovable object. Ron can't stop once he gets started and Hermione is too stubborn to admit she's wrong. And, the thing is, they both clearly love it.
Hermione wouldn't want a "yes" man and Ron wouldn't want someone who can't handle teasing. He challenges her intellect, and she gets an intellectual challenge. It's a win win.

I really wanted to animate one of these scenes where Ron and Harry are goofing off, because I think it’s interactions like these that make the books fun.
Ron is my favourite character. And you can tell just from watching my other videos. The movies did my boy so dirty, this is my way of giving him the spotlight for once.

the gang of slytherins discrepancy :(
“Snape knew more curses when he arrived at school than half the kids in seventh year, and he was part of a gang of Slytherins who nearly all turned out to be Death Eaters.”
Sirius held up his fingers and began ticking off names.
“Rosier and Wilkes — they were both killed by Aurors the year before Voldemort fell. The Lestranges — they’re a married couple — they’re in Azkaban. Avery — from what I’ve heard he wormed his way out of trouble by saying he’d been acting under the Imperius Curse — he’s still at large. But as far as I know, Snape was never even accused of being a Death Eater — not that that means much. Plenty of them were never caught. And Snape’s certainly clever and cunning enough to keep himself out of trouble.”
"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", Chapter 27 "Padfoot Returns"
we know avery was at hogwarts at the same time as mulciber and snape, alongside wilkes and rosier. lucius and narcissa also overlapped (albeit briefly) with snape’s time at school. however, the same can’t be said for bellatrix - born in ‘51, she’d have left hogwarts long before he set foot in it.
hence my question: how is this portrayed in fanfiction? how do writers attempt to make it work? the quote refers to the lestranges as a married couple—bellatrix and bodolphus. sure, rabastan could’ve been younger and part of the slytherin gang, but that still doesn’t fix the discrepancy.
i know the author wasn’t exactly on speaking terms with basic arithmetic, but i’m more curious about how fanfic writers have handled it. how have you seen people explain this? (i’m a sucker for rules and patterns—neurodivergent curse, i suppose—so i can’t write a word until i’ve sorted this out, haha).
