You matter, you are loved, you are not alone.
It is common and understandable that, when you hear about the death of someone you care about, especially when it appears to have been a suicide, you can feel intense depression triggers. You may even have suicidal thoughts of your own.
If this happens to you, PLEASE TALK TO SOMEONE RIGHT AWAY. You can reach out to a crisis counselor, someone you trust who is in your support network, or your therapist.
A few resources to help, if you need it:
NAMI’s helpline: 800-950-6264
OK 2 Talk: http://ok2talk.org/
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – Call 800-273-TALK (8255)
Crisis Text Line – Text NAMI to 741-741

More than 20,000 Muslims gathered in Canada for three days to denounce terrorism
More than 20,000 Muslims gathered at a three-day convention to condemn terrorism and religious extremism.
The 41st Jalsa Salana was held from Friday to Sunday at the International Centre in Mississauga, Canada, where Muslims from all over the country listened to guest lecturers and imams deliver speeches and sermons to promote a more peaceful world.
Lal Khan Malik, the national president of Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at Canada, the organization hosting the convention, said that while religious extremists like the Islamic State have nothing to do with Islam, Ahmadi Muslims felt they were able to show a side of Islam that most Westerners don’t have an opportunity to see.
“Over 20,000 attendees at this convention are able to show Canadians the true and peaceful teachings of Islam,” Malik said. Read more (7/13/17)

We live in a culture that not only blames sexual assault victims but also tells potential victims, especially women, that it is their duty to make sure they are not assaulted. It’s wrong and change begins by awareness. Spread the message.
Here’s an article on why people victim blame and what we can do to stop it

Malala is spending her 20th birthday fighting for girls’ education in Iraq
It’s been a big week for Malala Yousafzai.
On Friday, the women’s rights advocate announced from her newly launched Twitter account that she’d graduated high school.
“Graduating from secondary school … is bittersweet for me,” she wrote. “I’m excited about my future, but I know that millions of girls around the world are out of school and may never get the opportunity to complete their education.”
Yousafzai, not one to waste any opportunity, is already at work trying to help other girls have the same chance.
On Tuesday, she celebrated her 20th birthday a day early in Iraq by way of her “Girl Power Trip,” an initiative that involves Yousafzai traveling around the world to talk to girls who have struggled trying to access education. Read more (7/12/17)

She May Be The Most Unstoppable Scientist In The World
Two years ago, Eqbal Dauqan was going to work in the morning as usual. She’s a biochemistry professor. And was driving on the freeway, when suddenly: “I felt something hit my car, but I didn’t know what it was because I was driving very fast,” she says.
Dauqan reached the parking lot. Got out of the car and looked at the door. What she saw left her speechless.
“A bullet hit the car, just on the door,” she says.
The door had stopped the bullet. And Dauqan was OK. She has no idea where the bullet came from. But it turned out to be an ominous sign of what was to come.
“In college, I would tell my friends that I wanted to pursue a Ph.D., and they would chuckle and ridicule the idea,” says Eqbal Dauqan, who is an assistant professor at the University Kebangsaan Malaysia at age 36. Born and raised in Yemen, Dauqan credits her “naughty” spirit for her success in a male-dominated culture. Sanjit Das for NPR
