Emma says of her work: "Using paintings, photo transfers, and installations, I create exhibitions that explore gender, ecology, and the history of science. My work celebrates non-human nature and our capacity for connection with other species while grieving ongoing ecological destruction. In embracing contradictory emotions I often turn to strategies of juxtaposition, layering, ambivalence, and incongruity.

Across projects, my work shows a commitment to historical research, environmental justice, intimate storytelling, and tonal slipperiness. My imagery slides between the fanciful and the somber, the ironic and the affective, just as my work slides back and forth between paintings and photo transfers, and between paintings and the wall. Through these shifts in register and scale, I grapple with the complexity of my subject position and the larger systems we live under."
