What is Domain Authority in SEO?
Domain authority is simply the likeliness of a domain to rank for a specific phrase by indicating the site’s overall power or influence. The higher your domain rating/authority, the more like you are to rank high for more competitive keywords. It’s on a scale of 0-100, where 0 is the lowest level of power, and 100 is the most.
Read the full article here: What is Domain Authority in SEO?
Domain Rating (DR) vs. Domain Authority
So technically, domain rating was developed by ahrefs to compete with MOZ’s domain authority scale. The two are often used interchangeably because, well…they mean pretty much the same thing. I know more technical SEO experts will be furious at this comparison, but for the average business owner looking to broaden their knowledge, they are pretty much the same thing; they indicate how strong a domain is.
Is Domain Authority important for SEO?
Yes, but also no… Sorry :/
It’s important for SEO analysts and marketing agencies since it allows us to measure how strong your website is compared to your competition. For instance, if you have an average (taken by ahrefs, moz, etc.) domain rating of 5 and your competitor has a domain rating of around 15, it means their site is considered, by these tools, NOT Google, to be more influential.
For an average blogger or business owner looking to invest in SEO, it isn’t super important on your end. However, it’s important to understand the concept so that when you speak with your search engine optimization experts, you know what’s going on.
So yes, domain rating is important for SEO in a technical sense, but in terms of overall impact, it has no endorsement by Google.
What is the Fastest Way to Improve My Domain Rating?
If you’re looking to improve and increase your overall domain score, you can do so by increasing the number of high-quality backlinks pointing to your site, emphasis should be placed on high-quality.
You want backlinks from sites that are related to your niche, have a large following, and have a high domain rating. This will boost your overall score.
If you aren’t sure what a backlink is, you can check out our SEO Terminology Basics.
How Can I Get Good Backlinks?
Make a blog about the top people/businesses in your industry.
Mention the people you want to have a link back to you
Contact them via email, social media, or call them
Tell them you featured them in a blog
Ask them to link back to your site as a favor
Buying Backlinks to Boost Domain Score
You can also buy backlinks from people on Fiverr. Be careful, though, a lot of the time, they are spammy and irrelevant web 2.0s which, if used incorrectly, can penalize your site. There is a trick of pointing these links to silo pages or using a branded anchor text, but this is a more complicated topic for another time.

What are Backlinks and Why Do They Matter for Your Online Marketing?
A backlink is essentially a way for Google to see how many sites support your website. The more quality backlinks you have, the more your website gains Google’s trust.
Read the full article here: What are backlinks?
What are “Good Quality” Backlinks?
A good quality backlink is a link that comes from a site with a high domain score or rating (use MOZ, Ahrefs, etc. for find this out) in your niche. If you’re wondering what domain rating is, check out our article on “what is domain authority?”
Dofollow vs. Nofollow Backlinks
As if SEO and online marketing couldn’t get even more complicated, it just did. But that’s why you’re reading our article and not some other bozo’s 10,000-word article.
A dofollow link basically tells Google to “follow” the link back to its original source. A nofollow link tells Google “don’t follow” the link back. Pretty simple right?
Now, what does this mean? Google, and other search engines, to be fair, want to see the type of link you have and in what context, so if they can follow the link back to the source and see that the site is relevant, you’ll gain their trust. A link is by default a dofollow link, and the site that gives that link to another is essentially vouching for the site. While a nofollow link is trying to disassociate itself from the recipient.
Why do nofollow links exist?
Nofollow links are put in place because if every link were a dofollow link, then it would be a complete numbers game, and you could get an infinite amount of “link juice” from sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. by just inserting your website URL.
How Can I Get Backlinks for My Site?
You’ve got three basic options: wait for them to come naturally, buy them, and do backlink outreach. Because waiting for them naturally doesn’t involve much labor, we won’t discuss that strategy in-depth–it’s also really boring!
Buying Backlinks
So if you have a few bucks (literally, you can buy backlinks for $5) you might want to consider buying backlinks to your site. Just be sure to do a little research before buying them.
Where to buy backlinks
You can use Fiverr, Linkgraph, or any other backlink seller. Fiverr backlinks can be pretty cheap, while linkgraph and other sellers tend to be more pricey.
Here’s a good rule to follow: If you’re a local business in a population of less than a million you can probably get away with cheap and low-quality backlinks. If you’re competing nationally or in a city with over a million people, invest in quality links.
Buying Backlinks from Fiverr
So if you choose to buy them from fiverr you’re going to want to watch out for Web 2.0s. You might see “I will generate 2,500 web2.0 backlinks for $5” and you might think “WOW, 2,500 links for $5!?” Sorry to disappoint, but you should probably not go with the cheapest option unless you know what you’re doing.
Oh you still want to do it anyway? Okay here’s a quick tip: Only buy web 2.0 backlinks that are pointing to a secondary or tertiary page. Something like yoursite.com/services/service-item1 and the anchor text should be your ideal keyword(s). NEVER have a web 2.0 backlink point to your homepage with an exact match keyword. You risk getting penalized. So be careful!!
I would recommend buying press releases with a dofollow backlink from Fiverr. Press release gigs will often allow you to submit your own content so you can get a contextual backlink with your NAP (Name, Address, Phone#) which will also help you with local SEO!

THE JCSURGE ANTI-SPAM POLICY 2022 AND BEYOND
THE JCSURGE ANTI-SPAM POLICY 2022 AND BEYOND
To the general public,
Over the past decade, the marketing industry has become increasingly aggressive. Marketing companies have tactfully convinced the public that dozens of follow-up calls, emails, and retargeting campaigns are the norm and consumers need to “get used to it.” We have heard numerous complaints from customers and others in the industry that they are bombarded with spam and junk solicitations that borderline harassment.
This isn’t just the case with email marketing but SMS marketing too. So how does JCSURGE combat this problem?
By laying out our outreach policy.
Visit our website at: JCSURE.COM
JCSURGE’s Email Marketing Policy
When you signup for a video audit, request a consultation or inform of us any interest, we will put you on our email list, just like any other marketing company. However, here are some rules we are implementing to protect our audience from spam.
We will identify the purpose of the email clearly. Example: “This email is a follow-up to your interest in receiving a video audit. Please see the attached video…”
Our subject lines will be labeled clearly. We will never promise something we can’t keep.
If you ask us to remove you from our list, we will remove you. If we solicit you again after you’ve requested to be removed, you will receive $500 in JCSURGE credit which applies to any website design, SEO, or general consultation.
If we do not hear a response from you after 3 attempts, you will automatically be removed from our list. We will not flood your inbox with unwanted solicitations.
We will always state who it was that wrote the email.
There will always be a direct line to call or email to request removal.
We will follow any additional regulations set by the ICAN SPAM ACT.
JCSURGE’s Phone & Text Policy
You will always be informed of the reason for the call at the beginning.
If you ask to be removed/placed on our “Do Not Call” list, you will not be solicited again. If we do solicit you again after you’ve requested to be removed, you will receive $500 in JCSURGE credit which applies to any website design, SEO, or general consultation.
During cold outreach, we will leave a maximum of 3 voicemails that go unanswered in a given year.
During cold outreach, we will attempt to call a maximum of 3 times. If by the third time we have not heard from you, we will remove you.
We will not attempt to mask our caller IDs or call from a different line (unless a different representative is calling, to which parts 3 & 4 still apply).
We will always state who is calling.
Additional Policy Notes
Because we are attempting to restore people’s trust in the marketing industry, we sincerely ask for any additional feedback on this policy. Please send all direct questions to [email protected] or [email protected] or call (917) 747-4234 and we will answer any questions you have regarding our ANTI-Spam policy.
This policy is in effect as of September 1st, 2022.

6 Powerful Ways Business Owners Can Help Their SEO Team
Tumblr media
So you’re looking to hire an SEO team, or already have, and you’re wondering, “What can I do to ensure the SEO people I hire maximize my ROI?” Well, it’s not an uncommon question we hear come up at JCSURGE. We’re fortunate to have a client base that is engaged with the work we provide, and it makes us feel like we’re actually doing something and helping a business. At the end of the day, you’re hiring real people who want to feel valued, and one of the easiest ways to give those people that feeling is by being engaged to at least some degree. This means sending content, asking questions, and checking in on those people once in a while.
Read the full article here: 6 Powerful Ways Business Owners Can Help Their SEO Team
Frequently send photos and unique content
Google loves photos and videos. It’s a strong ranking signal and boosts your website’s user experience (UX). It also helps your brand engage with your target audience.
Send announcements and updates on your business
At JCSURGE, we typically manage both the SEO campaign and website design/maintenance, but this also translates to taking an interest in your business as well.
We use company updates on your website, Google My Business page, social media profiles, and supporting articles as well. If you’re asking yourself, “Is this really important to share with my SEO team?” the answer is almost always going to be a yes.
Check your rankings but don’t obsess
It almost sounds like every SEO company’s dream to have clients seldom check their rankings, but this is NOT the way we want to operate. Why? Because it creates an unstable relationship between your business and the SEO team.
So how should you be monitoring your SEO performance? Typically you will receive a list of keywords your team is targeting, alongside regular reports of what has been accomplished and how your traffic is looking overall. Be active! When you have 5 minutes at your time, try entering a few of those keywords to see how your business is doing in the organic search and Google Maps if you’re a local business
Learn some of the terminologies
Whether you’re a lawyer, plumber, accountant, mechanic, or dentist, it’s nice to hear when your customer has some understanding of the lingo you typically use in your industry. The same applies to SEO. Getting yourself familiar with the basics of search engine terminology will make communication and understanding much easier.
Here is some vocabulary every business owner should know in the SEO world:
Keywords/keyphrases
Organic keywords
Organic traffic
Bounce rate
Session rate
Meta tags
Get customers to leave reviews
If you’re a local business owner, the easiest and most effective way you can help us SEO specialists help you is by getting your customers to leave you a review. Why? Because Google reviews are an important ranking factor when it comes to ranking in the Google Maps section. That’s at least from an SEO standpoint, but from a more practical business standpoint, Google Maps is typically the best way for prospects to find and engage with your business. The majority of local search traffic goes to companies ranking in the top 3 in the maps section, and with each listing, you can see their reviews.
Think outside the box, and ask your team for perspective
SEO is a subcategory of online marketing, and if you look at the bigger picture, it’s a part of marketing in general. We’ve heard people associate SEO with computer programming and crazy backend code that only a few computer nutjobs understand. But the reality is that search engine optimization, just like any marketing strategy, is a lot more fluid and cooperative with other aspects of marketing. It involves more problem solving than anything else.
When it comes to hiring an SEO agency, company, or consultant, remember that they are not magicians. They are craftsmen, but like any craftsmen, they are only as good as the materials and tools they are supplied with.
If you’re looking to hire a professional SEO agency, consider reaching out to our team at JCSURGE. We work with local and national business executives across the United States to increase their search visibility.

6 Ways to Improve Your Website to Inspire Quality Job Applicants
Tumblr media
With the economy slowing down, and a shortage of labor hurting supply chains and consumer demands, finding quality job applicants has become vital to saving our country’s economy. One of the biggest challenges employers of all industries face is hiring young applicants.
Read the full article here: 6 Ways to Improve Your Website to Inspire Quality Job Applicants
So what can you, the business owner, do to hire in a labor shortage where good help appears to be non-existent? Here are 6 ways you can utilize your website to encourage quality job applicants from.
Build Your Online Application Form
Keep it short and minimalist. Your main priority in the online application is to collect information about the applicant and gauge whether they are looking for work or looking to become an active team member.
Make it Professional. Avoid using Google Forms, or any third-party form builder. You want this to be on your website and completely designed to fit your company’s brand. For this reason, it’s recommended you hire a website designer, graphic designer, or branding consultant to help you design an eye-capturing form that applicants will want to engage with.
What if I Need Applicants NOW?
If you need applicants urgently and can’t wait to develop a professional application form then you may opt to upload a PDF copy of your application sheet that you have in-person applicants fill out. You may also build one using Google Forms.
Develop Your Agenda and WHY
Before you build your application form, you must consider the purpose. Sure it’s to hire people, but why are you looking for help? Are you growing too fast? Are you looking to expand? Are you losing current personnel?
Good managers develop a specific agenda with their processes, and hiring is no exception.
Here are some things you want to consider:
What age range are you looking for?
What overall demographic of people are you looking for?
What skill sets do you need?
What soft skills do you need? E.g., verbal communication.
What can you bring to their lives?
How involved do you want to be with your workers’ personal lives?
What does your company value? And what does your applicant value?
The more specific you get with this exercise, the better!
Share on Social Media and Other Platforms
Share a link to your application on Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and any other platforms. In-person communication also works wonders. Next time you suspect someone is qualified to work for you, you can ask them to go to your website or you can simply get their number or email and send a link to your application. Seeing www.xyzcompany.com/job-application will capture most people’s attention better than seeing a link to a Google Form!
Create a Video Describing Each Role & Your Company
Video grabs people’s attention. It allows you to promote your company with visuals and stimulation which employees will need in order to consider you in today’s digital age. Remember, the national average attention span is shrinking, and with a labor force unwilling to work, you need to stand out. Video is a sure way to do so.
Make a Quiz and Add Difficult Questions
If you’re looking to hire anyone off the street for your painting business, restaurant, or service firm, then this isn’t the article for you. But if you’re looking to hire long-term applicants, who align closely with your company’s brand, consider adding a short quiz or at least a few difficult questions.
The quiz can be something related to your industry. It’s not important what the question is, as long as it is open-ended and not a factual/yes or no question. For instance, if you’re a painting company you may ask “What steps would you take to pick up spilled paint?” This is better than “Are you comfortable working under stress?”
Make EVERYTHING Clear
You don’t want to hire just anybody. Avoid getting too excited if you get a job application. If you’re established enough to where you have someone doing HR and Recruiting for you, congrats you can ignore this. But if you’re doing this yourself, or you’re trying to get an office manager or another person to do this for you, make sure everything is clear.
Clearly display a phone number they can call or email they can ask questions to regard the job position or company. Make office hours readily available on your site as well.
Clearly label the people you are not interested in hiring.
If you’re unsure where to begin when it comes to implementing effective digital recruiting strategies feel free to reach out to our consultants at JCSURGE. We help local businesses across the country implement effective online marketing strategies that turn websites into assets that unlock business opportunities.
If you already have a digital presence and would like some feedback, we’re happy to provide you with a FREE video analysis of your current website.

Why Authentic Marketing is Critical for Your Business
Tumblr media
As a small business owner you constantly need to find new ways to stand out against your competitors, in a way that is both affordable and reliable. The answer? Content marketing, but more importantly, authentic content marketing. Why? Because consumers can sniff out shady marketing faster than dogs can sniff treats. Younger consumers, specifically millennials and Gen Z, care more about a company’s values, and brand than they do the actual product according to PR Daily. Keeping authentic content such as unique blog posts, and creative videos, and setting new trends will be an important step in your business’s journey.
But why is this the case and what can you do for your business to stand out?Read the full article here:
Why Authentic Marketing is Critical for Your Business
The Problem: Lack of Originality
Too often online marketing firms will suggest and even deploy copied and pasted information from across the web with slight rewordings. Have you ever noticed this when you search for something specific? The blogs and articles that appear on the first page of Google all look the same, they sound the same, and they act the same. Why? Because they ARE the same. This is one of the biggest controversies in the SEO industry.
Why Content Can Often Be Inauthentic
Short and simple, it’s to please Google on a budget.
Making original content isn’t easy. It’s incredibly time-consuming and cognitively demanding. Time and cognition are not cheap these days, so companies often don’t allocate enough of their budget to hire quality marketing teams for their business.
Why Cookie-Cutter Content Solutions Don’t Work
It loses trust with your audience
It screams desperation
It doesn’t show effort
It ruins conversions and increase bounce rates (SEO)
How to Develop Authentic Content for Your Business
Start by using statistics, and research, and list your sources
Create videos and or audio summaries
Have downloadable content
Display your prices

Hiring an SEO Expert? Consider These 5 Things…
With so many SEO companies out there, it can become overwhelming to choose one that fits your company. Here are five considerations when choosing an SEO expert that works for YOU.
Read the full article here: "Hiring an SEO Expert? Consider These 5 Things…"
1. Communication and Listening Skills
It’s one thing for someone to understand search engine optimization and another thing for someone to effectively implement the right SEO strategy for your business. This is because many people in the SEO field may possess the right know-how, but may not understand how to bring it to your business where it can be profitable.
They need to ask you questions regarding your goals, your comfort level with being involved in the project, and other outside-the-box questions that will ensure you’re clearly understood. Lack of understanding on the SEO team’s side is a sure-fire way to have a bad SEO experience.
2. English Speaking and Cultural Familiarity
Hiring overseas is becoming more common, especially with more affordable talent being found in countries like the Philippines, Vietnam, Eastern Europe, and South America. That being said, it’s important to gauge their familiarity with your local customs. If you’re hiring an SEO expert, you want them to have strong verbal and written communication skills that go above and beyond basic English. Have they worked with American businesses before? Do they know the differences in time zones and how that affects business?
3. Creativity and Authenticity
When an SEO expert templates the same process over and over again, it can feel as if your website isn’t authentic or unique. It might rank well, but the lack of creativity may pose a problem if you’re trying to build a unique brand and surge your business forward. In other words, it may come off as if they are blatantly trying to manipulate the search engine algorithm which can sometimes lead to a bad user experience and cause prospects to exit your site.
Make sure that your SEO provider values authenticity and creativity just as much as they value repetition and solid systems.
4. Do They Understand Overall Digital Marketing?
Make sure you ask them, for clarification on what responsibilities are theirs and what responsibilities you need to take on. We’ve found a common theme that experts in the search engine space will not touch website design, Facebook advertising, or other important digital marketing strategies.
5. References and Testimonials
Do they have a track record of success? If they do, can you read client testimonials and reviews? What about case studies? We all know the importance of doing our homework, but oftentimes we are so caught up in the seller’s pitch or have our confirmation biases overwhelm us that we forget to do this basic step.
