He Told Me He Loves Me
The sun is shining right on top of us. The school wants to torture us by making us stand in the middle of the soccer field as we try to do a formation that looked like DNA because, “Excellence is in our DNA!” a school organizer would’ve shouted thinking people will cheer up and scream in unison with him like this is some kind of summer camp and that sentence is our team mantra. But no one did. All you can hear are grunts and complaints.
This continued for about an hour but it felt like a decade. After that, they forced us to smile for picture. We looked like fucking idiots as we tried smiling while the sun blinds us in the middle of the summer. Beads of sweat rolling down our backs as we looked for a shade. The summer heat almost drying us up.
“I’m so fucking thirsty!” I scowled. I am exhausted and out of breath. My vision is almost spinning around me.
But then, he handed a cold bottle of water. He handed it to me with a big smile on his stupid—yet beautiful—face. He looked so perfect and so gorgeous even though he looked like he dipped in a pool with his clothes on.
“Drink up.” He told me. He wiped my sweat with his pastel pink towel. A battery operated handheld pastel pink electric fan on his other hand. The soft wind it offers almost don’t hit my wet and salty skin. “You look like shit.”
I snarled. “No, shit. I almost died there.”
“Well, I don’t want that to happen.” He whispered, almost as soft as the wind from his handheld electric fan.
“What did you say?” I asked, trying to sit down on the concrete floor under the shadow of the engineering marvel of a covered court—stupidly high ceiling and benches that collect water when it drizzles.
“Nothing.” He said.
I slumped on to the concrete floor, my head is hanging on my neck from exhaustion. But still, he made me happy.  He has always been this caring and sweet. Not just to me, but to all of his friends. I am just a friend to him. But…I wanted more. I wanted something else. I wanted for him and I to be together until the—
“Hey there, love.” A voice unfamiliar to me interrupted my thoughts.
“Hey there.” He replied happily as if he knows this unfamiliar voice. “Are you thirsty?”
I looked up to see who it was. A beautiful girl with a flowy skirt in white with cherry blossom paintings all over it, her white blouse is almost see through, and a white bowler fedora with a black ribbon wrapping around the brim sits on top of her head. She looks like an angel. I didn’t even second guess why he chose to fall in love with her. She is perfect. They both are.
“No, I’m good.” She answered, holding up a glass bottle. She then saw me looking at her. She smiled and said hello.
“Oh, by the way, this is my friend.” He told her, not taking away his eyes off of her. But then he looked at me and said, “She’s my girlfriend.”
I am just a friend to him. And they are in a relationship. They looked so happy that I felt like I don’t stand a chance. They are both beautiful. I am nothing. But he is my everything.
“I have to go, love.” She said. “The school organizers have a meeting and I need to attend.” Then she blew a kiss goodbye, He just smiled but when she’s gone, he frowned.
“What’s up?” I asked, curiosity got the best of me.
“It’s fine.” He said. His voice almost broke when he said the last word. He looks like he isn’t fine. But why would he be not happy? What would be the reason?
There was a minute of silence between us, the chatter of other students filled the gap. He is thinking of something. I’m thinking of something to say to him to break the silence. But here, in a crowded area, we were alone. What could’ve been the problem between two perfect people?
“Um.” He finally broke the silence. His eyes staring at the soccer field covered in wilted yellow grass.
“Hey. What happened?” I asked. I still want to know the reason for his sudden silence.
“She…she’s…” He tried to start his sentence but he started to sob. He sniffed. I looked at him. He’s looking at the bright blue sky, trying not to make his tears stream down his face. “She’s cheating on me. I saw her French kissing the other student organizer at the multimedia laboratory. We were supposed to go to a café for a date but I arrived earlier than what she told me. And I should’ve followed that so I shouldn’t have seen that but…“
“But what?” I asked as he trailed off.
“But I think an unforeseen force predetermined that situation. It might’ve been a sign that something much more badly will happen.” He said. He let out a sigh and then looked at me and smiled. “And you were there when I needed someone.”
He was talking about that time I saw him outside the campus just behind the Engineering building, smoking a cigarette. I was looking for scrap metals to use as casing for a project but instead, I found him. I hate the smell of cigarettes but it was him I saw. He smiled at me and have said, “Oops. Busted.”
“Yeah. I thought you already quit smoking.” I would’ve said. Teasing him.
“I needed one.” He would’ve explained. “Something came up.”
“Shit happens.” I shrugged.
And then we talked about random things—his future, my future, his life, his mom, his dog, and his brothers and sisters. I loved every bit of his story. And I—the idiot in me—wants to be part of his future stories but I know that it won’t be.
***
“An unforeseen force probably predetermined that situation.” I teased. He smiled and then looked at me.
“I would’ve asked you that time if you wanted to go out,” I looked at him, my eyebrow raised as if asking him what he’s trying to do right now. “Well, do you want to?”
“Right now?” I asked. “I have a class at 2:30.”
“Forget about that. I’m sure you already passed that class.” He said. “Let’s get lost. I want to forget about her even for one night.”
We rode in his car to wherever he wanted to drive. He drove for an hour without the aid of maps application, just his guts and feelings. We’ve arrived at this hipster looking mall with open air architecture and shops looking like a set from a ‘50s television show—vintage and tacky. We saw a café that looked, well, decent. We ordered two caramel macchiato, something common that we share. We talked for hours until sundown. He talked about his new dog and showed a picture of a black dog with thick fur covering its eyes. He talked about his dream job of being able to program applications like a breeze. He talked about traveling with his mom to different places. And I still love every bit of it.
We left the tacky hipster vintage mall (and his car) and decided to stroll around the nearby places. I keep getting the feeling of him looking at me so I keep looking at him. I can feel my face getting hot and blood rushing. My ears turn red whenever I blush. Oh God, I hope my ears are not red.
“Your ears are red.” SHIT!
“Well, um, don’t mind them.” I said out of embarrassment.
“You’re blushing!” He teased. I don’t know if I can get more embarrassed than this but I think I do. “We were just strolling on this street and you’re already blushing.” He smiled.
“I AM NOT BLUSHING!” The streetlights are not my best friend at this time as they keep revealing my red ears.
“You really want this, don’t you?” He teased…again. Then, he suddenly grabbed me by my hand and dragged me into this unfamiliar street. He didn’t care about the other people around us. We walked an unfamiliar street but we didn’t care that we were lost. He stopped then faced me. He looked into my eyes. His eyes are so beautiful that I looked at his. We only cared about us in this moment. We forget about his girlfriend, my 2:30 class, the tacky hipster vintage mall, and the eyes on us. Everyone and everything disappeared.
“She will be gone from my life when we get back.” He told me with a smile. “If I can drive us home. I don’t know where we are.”
“I fucking hate you.” I teased.
“Yeah. But you should know that you are the one who’s always there for me.” He said. I can feel his honesty radiating from him. “Even if everything’s gone, you are still there for me. Even if everyone’s gone I will…” He paused.
“You will what?” I asked.
“I’m just looking at looking at your stupid face. The face I want to see every morning, evening, and midnight.” He said.
“Shut up.” I said. I wanted him to continue his sentence.
“I will still love you.” He said to me, his eyes still looking at mine. And just like that, he told me he loves me.
“And I do, too. I love you, too.”
