CPE312 Software Design and Engineering
App Presentation + Exam Exemption (Finals)
Week 16
December 17-18, 2024
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
Today was the big day—our final presentation for EduConnect TutorHub. Sir Carl told us that if we met 100% of the requirements, we’d get a perfect score, which motivated us to stay up all night finishing both the app and the paperwork. Early this morning, we gathered at the 4th floor of the CEA building to revise and finalize everything. When it was our turn, our leader introduced the app and its functionality, while I presented the documentation. After the presentation, Sir Carl pointed out some needed revisions, so we planned to fix everything and return the next day.
Later that night, Sir Carl messaged our group chat and announced that we were exempted from the finals exam as long as we submitted all requirements within the week. We were so happy—thank you, Sir Carl!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next day, we worked hard to complete everything. Our leader prepared screenshots for white-box and black-box testing, another teammate edited the user manual brochure and tutorial video, and I updated Chapter 4 to show the app’s 100% success rate. In Chapter 5, we concluded that the app is fully functional and ready for deployment, with recommendations for future improvements. We also tested its performance on multiple devices, showing that it worked smoothly without errors.
For the System Usability Scale (SUS), Sir Carl asked us to survey more respondents to ensure accurate results. We immediately conducted surveys with classmates and managed to get a 90+ SUS score, earning an A+ rating with the best imaginable ranking. After all the revisions and the final presentation, Sir Carl gave us a perfect 100%. We were relieved and proud to have completed everything on time and secured exam exemption.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This project had its challenges—stressful moments, arguments, and sleepless nights—but we pulled through as a team. I’m grateful to Sir Carl for his guidance, which helped turn our ideas into reality. This feels like a huge milestone for me as a 3rd-year Computer Engineering student. With that, we, the team of EduConnect TutorHub, are signing off. Good night!

Quiz 2 + Last Day
Week 15
December 12, 2024
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
Today was our last day of meeting for our Software Design and Engineering class. Sir Carl gave us a quiz covering Topics 8 and 9, which focused on Data Mining and Data Visualization. Data Mining involves finding useful patterns and insights hidden in large amounts of data, while Data Visualization helps us present these findings in simple, clear pictures or charts that are easy to understand. After the quiz, we took a group photo with Sir Carl as a keepsake of our time together. Thank you, Sir Carl, for guiding us through these lessons!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For our application, Edu Connect Tutor, we asked Sir Carl about improving our user manual. He showed us how to fit it into a brochure layout and make it simpler, so it will be perfect when we create our video guide. We also talked about the functional testing forms, which help check if our app meets all the requirements and works as intended. Our team leader discussed some problems with our backend, and Sir Carl suggested methods to fix errors and improve the system’s performance. Overall, we are almost finished with our project and hope to have it completely ready soon.

CPE312 Software Design and Engineering
Wellness Period + Quiz 1 + Class Discussion + Group Activity
Week 13-14
November 28, 2024
December 5, 2024
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
Today, Sir Carl started our class with a quiz that covered some of the key topics we’ve tackled in the past few weeks, like software reliability, quality management, ISO standards, and API basics. These topics helped us understand how to make software better and more reliable. After the quiz, he gave a short discussion about data mining, explaining how companies use data to understand their customers, predict what they might want, and improve their services. It’s fascinating to see how data plays such a big role in business decisions. We then had a 10-item seatwork to test what we learned, and afterward, we worked in groups on the Target Market Activity. This activity focused on using data mining techniques to come up with strategies for understanding and targeting customers in a business setting.
This will be our last class before the finals, which are just around the corner. I really hope I can do well on the exams and that the questions will be clear and based on the lessons we’ve covered. I also want to thank Sir Carl for being so understanding, especially with our late submissions and system issues.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On a side note, we’ve made a lot of updates to our EduConnect system. We added a "Log Out" button using a three-line menu for quick access. The "Create Subject" feature is now a pop-up instead of a separate file, making it more user-friendly. In the tutee’s class stream, we added a "Messages" button so they can easily contact their tutors, likely through Messenger. We also cleaned up the profile section by removing unnecessary features like the bio, which frees up more space for the subject cards. Lastly, for the payment system, we added a feature where users can click on a subject to view payment details in a pop-up. There’s still a lot to improve, but we’re getting closer to creating something we can be proud of.

CPE312 Software Design and Engineering
Seatwork + Class Discussion + Group Activity
Week 12
November 21, 2024
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
Today, Sir Carl gave us a short seatwork to check if we had read the course material on Topic 7: API. The topic covered the basics of APIs, including what they are, why they are important, how they work, examples of APIs, and the different types, such as public, private, partner, and composite APIs. APIs are like bridges that allow different software to share data and functions. For example, they enable apps to connect to social media, payment systems, or weather services. Sir Carl explained how APIs work, focusing on their role in sending and receiving requests between systems.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the discussion, we had a group activity where we simulated how a patient could securely access medical records through an API connected to a healthcare provider's electronic health record (EHR) system. Our task was to identify API endpoints, define HTTP methods, specify parameters and headers, and address security measures to ensure only the right data was retrieved. We also created a sequential diagram of the process and discussed challenges like preventing unauthorized access and designing a secure system. Once we submitted the activity, our class was dismissed early.

CPE312 Software Design and Engineering
Class Discussion + Application Update
Week 11
November 7-14, 2024
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
Last week, we had a class discussion and a short pre-test with Sir Carl about Topic 6: Software Reliability and Quality Management. This topic focuses on ensuring that software is dependable, works as expected, and meets high standards of quality. Software reliability refers to the ability of the software to function correctly over time without errors or failures, even under different conditions. On the other hand, quality management involves planning, monitoring, and improving the development process to ensure that the final product meets user needs and expectations. This includes activities such as testing, debugging, and following industry standards. We also had an activity related to the topic, where we were given case studies to analyze. Our task was to identify issues in the software's quality and suggest improvements to enhance its reliability and performance, helping us apply what we learned in real-world scenarios.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And for the update this week, I fixed some minor issues in the application because Expo Go was updated, which caused some UI design errors. I'm still confused about how to move the payment button to the payment section. Two days ago, I planned to code, but there was no internet in our area, and I still have many UI designs to finish. Today, I’m working faster so we can start focusing on our activities.

CPE312 Software Design and Engineering
EduConnect: PIT Software Presentation
Week 10
October 24-25, 2024
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
Yesterday, we had our PIT software presentation scheduled during our Software Design and Engineering class. Leading up to the presentation, I felt a bit nervous because I hadn’t completed as many layout designs as I’d hoped. I realized I’d also forgotten to upload some files to GitHub. The night before, I was cramming to finish the system's layout and ended up staying up all night. I also felt some personal stress that affected my focus, so I decided to play some music to help me keep going and complete my work.
During our presentation, our leader gave a brief introduction to our system, called 'EduConnect.' This platform connects students with tutors, who can be other students or instructors. We showcased the main navigation functions, including signing in, creating accounts, the dashboard, subject room, searching for instructors, messaging, profiles, payments, and settings. We demonstrated the backend using Firebase, which handles account management like adding and deleting accounts directly through the database. We also shared some of the errors we encountered and how we planned to fix them. Our instructor provided valuable guidance and gave us feedback, which led to a promising score. He then advised us on areas to improve and asked us to present again the next day with the adjustments made.
Today, we returned to present our updated system to improve our score. Our leader, Tejano, made significant improvements to the backend, such as adding error handling for short passwords, handling invalid credentials, and optimizing the runtime. His leadership included regular updates and reminders, keeping our roles well-coordinated and helping me identify parts of the layout that needed fixing or adding. With his support, we were able to finish the presentation successfully. I’m grateful for his patience and dedication to the project, which motivated all of us to stay on track. We wrapped up the presentation and were relieved to have done our best.

Announcement + Quiz 2: Part 1-2
September 26, 2024-October 3, 2024
WEEK 7-8
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
Last 2 weeks ago, (September 26) our instructor decided not to meet us in class. Instead, he uploaded activities, the last lecture for the midterm, and guidelines for our PIT. And along with that, we were reminded to submit our consultation forms.
Last week (October 3), we did Quiz Part 1 on software testing. I was late due to family circumstances but still managed to answer some questions, even though I had a mental block. For Quiz Part 2, it was conducted online, but we had issues accessing it because of USTEP's server. Our instructor helped us resolve the issue and reminded us to complete the quiz on time to avoid traffic problems with USTEP again.
Midterms are fast approaching, and I'm hoping I can answer the exam for this subject. I know we can do this! I also hope our instructor will give us an easy exam 😁 (Thank you, Sir!!! HAHAHA).

CPE312 - Software Design and Engineering
Class Discussion + Group Activity
September 19, 2024
WEEK 6
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
Today, our instructor discussed about Software Testing and Quality Assurance. Although I was a bit sleepy during the lecture, I managed to catch a few important parts of the discussion. We learned about different testing methods like Black Box and White Box Testing, and John Brooke's System Usability System (SUS). Our instructor also discussed Regression Testing, which checks if changes in the software create new problems, and System Testing, which ensures that the whole program works properly before release.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the lecture, we had our group activity where we analyzed UI (User Interface) problems. Our group included Sean Quincy Manquilimotan and Earl Cagaanan as note-takers, while John Raynier Tejano and I focused on discussing the issues in the UI design. We looked at problems users might face, like unclear layouts or confusing buttons, and tried to come up with ways to improve the overall experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were also given another task involving John Brooke’s System Usability Scale (SUS). This scale helps measure how easy or hard it is to use a system by asking 10 questions. Each question is rated from 1 to 5, and after calculating the responses, we get a score that tells us how good the usability is. A higher score means better usability. To calculate it, you subtract 1 from the odd-numbered questions' answers, subtract the even-numbered questions' answers from 5, and then multiply the total by 2.5 to get a score out of 100.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this task, Tejano worked on solving the SUS with responses from 3 participants through google forms and google spreadsheets, while I did it manually. We added up all the scores, divided them by 3 (since there were 3 participants), and this gave us the average score, showing how usable the system was overall.
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed the activity because we worked as a team and made sure no one was left behind. Everyone’s opinions were welcomed, and we didn’t have any arguments. I hope that when we work on our EduConnect TutorHub software, we can use the same strategy we showed today—doing teamwork and everyone participates.

CPE312 - Software Design and Engineering
App Progress + Quiz 1
September 12, 2024
WEEK 5
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
A few days ago, we continued improving and adding features to our app. We labeled the functions that were completed but needed backend support and those that were unfinished or needed more work. Even though progress is a bit slow, I’m learning a lot and enjoying the experience.
Today, we resumed Quiz 1, which covered software design patterns and some fundamental skills of a software engineer. I tried to answer the questions, but I wasn’t confident in my responses. I carefully matched each problem scenario to the most suitable design pattern. The questions were quite challenging, especially since I had only read halfway through the material. I hope to push myself to read more thoroughly so I can answer more confidently next time.

WEEK 4
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
Today in class, Our instructor discussed Software Design (Topic 2), where our instructor covered important Design Patterns like Observer, Mediator, and Proxy (As much as I can remember). These patterns help in creating reusable, maintainable, and efficient software solutions by solving common design problems. We also discussed how these patterns are categorized into Creational, Structural, and Behavioral types and how they benefit developers by improving code organization, communication, and maintainability.
After the lecture, we had a group activity where we designed a system for collaborative document editing. We applied what we learned by figuring out how to handle real-time updates, manage user conflicts, and control versions. We were short on time, but we still managed to cover our topic thoroughly.

Consultation Week
August 29, 2024
WEEK 3
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
We just received a message from Sir Carl informing us that there are no classes today. Instead, he said the time will be used for consultation on our project.
As we arrived at the school, we decided to immediately consult Sir Carl about the progress of our team's work. One of our members, who had started the project over the long weekend, shared youtube links to tutorials for a specific mobile app framework. I watched several tutorials but struggled to understand them, so I decided to enjoy the rest of my long weekend and plan to start seriously in the coming weeks.
I’m so excited, and I really hope I can understand the tutorials quickly so that I can start as early as possible.

CPE312 - Software Design and Engineering
Class Discussion + Group Activity
August 22, 2024
WEEK 2
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
I woke up early because we had our online class and reporting with Ma'am Desai in the subject of Data and Digital Communication. Our report was about Online Connections. So it's all about the relationships formed and maintained through the internet, allowing people to communicate and interact regardless of physical distance.
So, fast forward. After our class, I immediately took a bath because I knew it would take time to finish, and I didn't want to be late for our face-to-face class, which was SDE. But the real reason I almost arrived late was that no buses were passing through our terminal, so I decided to take a mini bus. I arrived at school at exactly 12:11pm. I ran towards the elevator and saw a classmate, which was a bit of a relief, knowing I wasn't the only one running late.
As our class started, our instructor discussed the Week 1 module, which covers what it means to be a software engineer and the tools we should use when implementing software. I felt nervous thinking about how stressful this subject might be since it demands a lot of time, and I struggle with time management. That’s why I need to start practicing it.
As Sir Carl finished his discussion, he gave us a group activity involving a different case study where we analyze real-world scenarios to help improve our critical thinking skills, teamwork, and collaboration. We were given a short amount of time to create the report and analyze the problem, knowing our instructor would randomly pick a student from each group to present. Despite the rush, I really enjoyed the activity. I appreciated the group's teamwork and the process of analyzing, even if my ideas were somewhat off-topic. The experience I had today made me realize the importance of time management and teamwork, both of which are important as I continue my studies.

Class Orientation
August 15, 2024
WEEK 1
ִֶָ𓂃 ࣪˖ ִֶָ🐇་༘࿐
My sophomore year was kind of a bit exhausting for me, I almost didn't enjoy summer because I was worried about how to survive in college as I move into my third year. As enrollment quickly approaches, there's not a day when I don't feel pressured or worried about which subjects I will take. But thinking that I have something to look forward to in the future, I feel relieved and more motivated. So, I hope this coming school year will be full of hope, positivity, growth, opportunity, and success.
Tumblr media
In our first day of class, we started our Software Design and Engineering class with Sir Carl. He started explaining the rules for both online and face-to-face sessions and made us sure that we’re all set for what’s ahead. Then, he had us introduce ourselves and share our favorite artists, which was a cool way to break the ice. He then also explained how our grades will be calculated, which made me a bit nervous but also determined to do my best. It amazed me to think that the project we imagined in our previous subject (Project Management) is now going to come to life in this subject.
