Reading Festival Day 1

So come to find out it’s actually pronounced “Redding Festival” and not “Reading Festival.” Reading was my first festival of this kind, and before going I was a bit nervous and I had no idea what to expect. I love going to see bands that I know but the idea of a whole day filled with listening to random bands play while, waiting around for the ones I did know really didn’t appeal to me. Plus all the festival “craziness” that you hear about isn’t really my scene. I wasn’t into the idea of being around all of that for a couple days with no escape. After my first day there I was pleasantly surprised though, I loved it! 

Yes the mid day uncertainty was there, and the wandering from tent to tent to see if there was anything worth listening to got boring at about 4 in afternoon. And yes the festival “craziness” was present, but there was something special about the whole thing. There was around 80,000 people there with a few things in common, to have a good time and watch some amazing artists play the music that they love. The crazy thing that I noticed was that it seemed like everyone there had a different definition of what a good time was, or had a different love of music. I saw everything from people dressed in penguin suits trying to crowd surf, dudes walking around in head dresses, to people calmly sitting on the grass just enjoying the bands that were playing. It was such a trip and there was definitely a story to be told. The mix of people there were there to see a range of different types of music the headliners for the weekend ranged from Mumford & Sons, to Metallica, to Kendrick Lamar and everything in between.  I had never been in a environment that had so much visible tension but at the same time had this calm ebb and flow to it. It was almost surreal. 

I decided to only bring my film camera into Reading. I didn’t want to have to worry about my regular digital camera but I also wanted to capitalize on the rawness of film. My goal was to capture the weekend in it’s truest and rawest form with no alterations. I hope these give you a feeling of the weekend, allows you to reminisce, or give you the urge to go out on a lim and go to a festival yourself.

Portraits Kevin Glasky is an amazing human being with a crazy story. He grew up in and around San Francisco riding motorcycles and going on amazing backpacking trips through Yosemite and other parts of California. He was a true outdoorsman. A number of years ago Kevin was diagnosed with specific type of cancer and was told that he only had a handful of months left to live. Kevin beat the cancer years ago and now lives in Coeur d’ Alene, ID with his family. I mostly post photos of landscapes and the places that I’ve been but recently I’ve been thinking about changing it up a bit. I decided that I'm going to challenge myself to post portraits of people for a while. Most of the photos I’ll be posting were taken in the past, but my goal for each one will be to share the uniqueness of a person, not just some glamorized Instagram “adventure” shot or whatever. Joshua Monteith is a rad guy who currently lives in Coeur d’ Alene, ID. The dude is a killer videographer, an insane cyclist, and is now a dad to his little boy Ryder. Glacier National Park. 

I decided to something a little different for this post. All of these are  taken with my Canon AE-1 with TMAX-400 film. 

About three weeks ago I spent an awesome weekend with my dad in Montana. We drove to Glacier National Park, spent the night, and then continued to Missoula. Although it rained most of the time we had a great adventure. Revisiting one of our family vacation spots from my childhood was amazing.
