I DESPERATELY needed someone to tell me this as I grew up in leftist online spaces. So now I am going to tell YOU:
If you
Check what you sent over and over to make sure you didn’t say a slur instead of “hello how are you”
Fear that someone will find you thinking not-leftist-enough thoughts and will call you out and ruin you
Feel you have to make your intentions clear and over-explain your actions
Find yourself consistently resisting the urge to engage in reassurance-seeking WRT being a good enough ally to marginalized people
Stay up late endlessly debating political ethics in your head
Have a set of actions that you take after discovering you made a morally wrong decision so that you can atone, which you rely on for reassurance that you are not a bad person
Would rather not make a decision at all than make a decision that is the lesser of two evils, but is not morally pure
then I am gently, but firmly, requesting that you look into moral scrupulosity OCD.

YouTube is implementing an AI policy that tracks your watch history and determines your age with it. The only way to be able to continue watching the videos you want on YouTube if you've been falsley flagged as a minor by their AI is to give YouTube your government ID. This is being implemented in the US right now. It is essential to rage against this and put YouTube in the fucking ground if they continue with it—that may be the only way to make them backtrack. But damn isn't that hard to do when responding to this announcement with a polite but negative comment flags you for violating community guidelines and bans you from even posting it?

i think what bothers me about a lot of "girl power" narratives is that they function on the implicit idea on the idea that women can become worthy of respect. and i happen to think that really caring about women means believing they already are worthy of respect. that historical seamstresses and soccer moms and forgotten sisters and sweet polite little girls and someone's weird grandma matter just as much as the warriors and politicians, even if they, personally, never accomplish anything "cool."

From the media that brought you "Millennials are killing [insert industry here]" articles for years and years and years, now we have....

"Hey, Gen Z, we're gonna relabel vacations into something else now and tell you how you really should be wary of taking vacation because it might impact your financial future."
This is a goddamn dystopia, we know this, right?

there's been plenty of pushback against youtube's plan to age-check users by using an AI to analyze everyone's watching habits, but amidst that, i spotted this playlist circulating among some teens:

(picture is a reconstruction to protect the kids identity)
interesting! they're trying to trick the AI by watching videos that have a primarily adult viewer demographic? well im a curious fella so naturally i have to take a look-see, and

this just in:
In the year 2000 it cost around $165,630 (for an average middle-class family) to raise a child from birth to age 18.
In the year 2025 it's projected that the same family would need to $414,000 to raise a child from birth to age 18.
I hate it here.
Oh, also both these numbers only account for the basic necessities, like food, child care/education (not college), transportation, healthcare, and clothing. That number doesn't include extras like birthday parties, extracurricular activities, or, again, the cost of college.
We went from needing to spend $9,201 a year to raise a child (in 2000) to needing $23,000 a year (in 2024)
And no- this isn't just because of inflation, I checked-
Tumblr media
If this was just inflation raising a child would cost about $17k a year, not $23k.
I. hate. it. here.

"Why is the world [western governments] all of a sudden trying to control us with mass surveillance?"
It's not all of a sudden. They've been trying to do this for years.
And people have been fighting it, for years. People have also been warning you, for years.
You were warned that Net Neutrality was super important. You were warned that COPPA and KOSA weren't what lawmakers said they were. People tried to tell you that banning apps would set dangerous precedent for the internet, and that they'd be coming for your VPNS. People tried to tell you that big tech companies trying to block ad-blockers and selling your data were bad things. People even tried to tell you that it was weird for supermarkets to be collecting mass amounts of data from your purchases to advertise to you, and that it was super weird for places like Walmart to need facial recognition cameras on top of that. You just didn't listen.
And you didn't push back.
And now we're here.
That said, boycott any site that wants you to upload your ID- for the love of the gods don't give them that shit it WILL get hacked/sold- and make some noise about this bullshit. We need to make it clear that we won't just lay down and take this.

A Note on Reblogging (Your Own Fic/Art/Stuff/Etc.)
Look, here’s the deal with tumblr: it moves fast. A lot of people follow enough blogs that scrolling through one’s entire dash is impossible. I remember the days when I could wake up in the morning and scroll back to the last post I saw before bed. Sweet, summer child.
Here’s the other deal with tumblr: I see so much anxiety about reblogging one’s own stuff, be it art; analysis; fanfiction; hell, personal posts and replies. I have (and continue to feel deeply) that anxiety. Every time, my inner critic and I go through the same song and dance.
Critic: You look like you’re begging for notes/replies/reblogs. People will think you’re needy/full of yourself/have to be the center of attention. You already have a few notes, why do you need more? Other people have it worst than you. Ugh, you’re just clogging the dashes of your followers. If they wanted to read it, they’d have read it already.
Me: *ball of anxiety* You’re right. Wait, no you’re not. Wait, maybe you are. Wait, no—
I’d say it’s 50/50, even now, that I’ll reblog myself.
And you know what? Fuck that.
Not everyone can get through their dash in a sitting.
Timezones are a thing.
Work hours are a thing, also affected by timezones.
Life away from tumblr is a thing (what??? I know).
There are so many reasons a person might not see your fic/art/stuff the first time. Reblog it the next day. Reblog it a week from now. Hell, set up a schedule or a queue and have it reblog itself three months from now. Go back through old fics and reblog the ones you really liked; I guarantee you have followers who are new enough to have never seen it or who would like to reread it.
Be proud of the work you do.
Oh yeah, I felt that resistance from here.
Say it again. Out loud. Write it on a post-it note and stick it where you’ll see it.
Be proud of the work you do.
You wrote/made it for a reason. And yeah, part of that reason was probably to share it with other fans. Otherwise, why post at all? I know. Man, I get it. I’m cringing even writing that. The fucked-up “don’t show off” mentality runs deep, right?
Fuck that, too.
If you have followers who unfollow you because you’re reposting your stuff (and this is hard to prove, remember; maybe they quit tumblr, maybe their interests diverged from yours, whatever), who cares? Let them go. For everyone who leaves you, many will stay. And many will be happy to see that thing they missed because of work, life, sleeping. Especially if you follow a few points of tumblr/dash etiquette:
Use cuts/read mores for anything longer than a few hundred words (I tend to cut at about 400-500 words, though if something’s under about 700 I might leave it).
Reblog at reasonable intervals (day/evening, next day reblog, etc. Hourly might be a bit much ;D).
Use tags so people can filter appropriately.
Be proud of the work you do.
(Write it down. Yes, you. <3)

Youtube Blackout (important)
I’m basically just restating a couple of other posts so that hopefully more people will be aware.
Tomorrow, August 13th, Youtube rolls out a new policy that uses generative ai to guess whether a user is 18+ based on the maturity of the videos they watch. Anyone who watches ANYTHING related to cartoons, video games, kids media, etc, will be targetted.
If you continue to use their services once you have been warned, they will “request” your ID and other personal information from you. This is a major privacy violation. If you do not give your personal info, you will be banned.
Starting tomorrow, until the decision is reversed, there is going to be a blackout where (ideally) nobody uses Youtube to force their attention.
I want you all to participate, if possible. Download videos beforehand if you need something to watch during the blackout. Censorship will continue to get worse if we don’t retaliate.
Adult medias that feature gameplay and/or animation are just as susceptible. This affects everybody.
Please pass it on.
