Jiří Stanislav Guth-Jarkovský (1861 - 1943) was a Czech educator, writer and ceremonialist of the President of the Republic.
In his book Společenský katechismus (Social cathechism) from 1914 he gives advice and instructions on how to behave in society, on the street and in public places, and how to conduct oneself on various social occasions.
At the beginning of the book, he describes who the gentleman/gentlewoman is, but most importantly, who stands against them:
"The gentleman is opposed by the kind of people we call phonies. Viktor Dyk has defined this variety nicely, perhaps somewhat plainly; 'It is a joyless type,' he says, 'but not sparse. Someone who got where he shouldn't have got. Someone who has become a master, but cannot be a master; who wants to show a master, but shows a phony. He hates intelligence, because he himself has none; he bows in humility to matter, because he himself stands and falls through matter. A cynic, he thinks that everything is for sale; in the expression of another's opinion he sees only the urge to buy. He is cunning, if he runs about to fool someone. He is childishly naive, if he runs about to create something. (. . .) Gabroche, the rascal of Hugo's Les Misérables, can sometimes behave like a gentleman and have tact of heart; a phony will never behave like a gentleman and talk of tact, he would laugh at you. Gavroche's street-smartness cannot offend you, though it may have been disrespectful and indiscriminate in its expressions; the coarseness of the phony is hopeless and disheartening. Gavroche the mischievous can sacrifice himself for something he suspects rather than understands; do not expect sacrifice from a phony, he will only sacrifice others.
P. S. A phony may one day become a minister."
And I dare add - a president.
